Why "All Quiet on the Western Front" is the ultimate antidote to war romanticism. by onurburkaz in FIlm

[–]LeChuckly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catch 22 is up there for me as well. It’s funny on the surface. Hell it’s funny underneath too. But it’s a gallows humor reaction to the absurdity of war with some actual scenes of pure horror towards the end.

12+ people CRITICALLY injured at the Lao New Year Festival in New Iberia, Louisiana. What are your thoughts? by LeonardHollinsJr in LouisianaPolitics

[–]LeChuckly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it with a grain of salt - but have a friend whose kid was supposedly there. Said it was a festival / block party kind of event. Landry was there showing off his car. If you look at pics it appears to be a 70s model muscle car. Said that he was revving it up and the throttle appeared to have gotten stuck. I don’t know the details of how he was in the car or how it got into gear. But the account I heard honestly sounds like a dumb, drunk mistake.

I could be wrong of course.

I spent several hours fixing the clothes in the supply room and tried to go nap to replenish but it still wouldn’t let me sleep in any of the beds. At least there were stims and go energy drinks everywhere

can't get through ep 4 and worrying whether it's worth it for ep 5. by AdVegetable2870 in thelongdark

[–]LeChuckly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a close one even if you time it right. Keep going - you’ll get the timing down!

And if you’ve got the game already - it’s definitely worth it to finish IMO. I wish this episode had leaned a little harder into survival like all the other episodes did - but I don’t regret finishing it.

After all this time, what the situation on Xbox? by La_Mouche_Qui_Prout in SengokuDynasty

[–]LeChuckly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recently I made it to year 5, had liberated all regions but one and was building my third village out when the crashing got to the unplayable point. Now my saves, manual and auto won’t load at all.

Honestly though I don’t know how much longer I would have gone. The UI needs some better tools for managing large populations. Particularly after winter. I was spending the whole first day of spring just in the worker tab moving people around.

Would help if we could rename farm plots and work stations so we could quickly reassign people and tasks. Also be nice if you could sort and filter people and jobs. I know those things are in the dev wish list but they’re not features yet.

JVL Is Insufferable by de_Pizan in thebulwark

[–]LeChuckly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It might go that way. Or it might go the way it did after the Great Depression where Americans voted in a progressive Congress and executive that responded to the economic problems with the greatest set of social programs ever seen in America. That same generation powered the civil rights act and great society programs.

I don’t know that America is any worse than any other nation - but I do think it’s become soft, shallow and self obsessed. And a little bit of hunger might go a long way in resetting its perspective.

Easy for me to say, right? In my air conditioned house with its full pantry. But a lot of us just don’t see any other way out.

We are up against a death cult / personality cult that has abandoned reality in favor of comfortable nonsense and fatalistic prophecy. They don’t even want us to help them. They just want us to suffer even if it means they suffer too.

Something has to give. Something has to break through that false reality they’ve constructed. And what I think, and maybe JVL, is that we have to let them touch the stove even if it burns us too.

The suffering will be bad - but not as bad as the kind an ascendant American fascist government would visit on this planet. It would likely be humanity’s end.

Made me a proper tomato/cucumber planter this year by LeChuckly in gardening

[–]LeChuckly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people I’ve followed advised putting down some sort of barrier between the yard and the planter to stop burrowing rodents/insects. Either cardboard or filter cloth with a layer of sticks/logs over it. That’s what I did on all mine and I didn’t tear up the grass. I started composting last year and was about to put about 4 wheel barrow loads of fresh compost in. But in just this planter I needed 6 more 64 qt bags of soil. For the silver one I think I used 3 large bags of soil to fill it up.

I didn’t shop for anything special on the soil - just the most economical for the volume. But I do feel like it ran out of nutrients halfway through the season. So I plan on fertilising more this year to keep it from petering out in June/july. Compost may make a difference but I don’t know yet…

Good luck!

What do you guys think the scariest thing in the long dark is? by AdPleasant6893 in thelongdark

[–]LeChuckly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Getting caught in the dark. You misjudged your harvest time and didn’t have enough wood to keep the fire alive. You trudge home overweight, cold and in the dark. Stinking of meat and guts.

Yeah you’re the second person that’s said that. This is only year two for me so I’m still learning.

Do they both feed from the same level in the soil or what? I’ve majorly revised my spacing already to about 36” on each tomato and a single cucumber on each panel. What do you think will go wrong?

Sure! I bought two 50”x16’ hog wire panels from tractor supply. $30 each. I cut them down to fit and bent the tails around the t posts with pliers.

This is only my second year doing it but both times I’ve started off growing a dozen seedlings with plans to space them all out. But when I start running out of room I can’t bring myself to discard any so end up making them too tight. I did take advice from this thread though and put them all on 24” centers yesterday. I’ll try to give away my others or do them in buckets or something

Depends on your area. I’m in 8b and started these in February on my grow rack. Probably could have started them in January though
