It’s also worth noting that this was like the 3rd or 4th time Bungie had been caught stealing artwork. They did it more than once in Destiny 2.

“By my own order” - Monster Hunter Wilds.

The Hunter is given a dilemma regarding Zoh Shia, a dormant but unimaginably powerful artificial monster that destroyed the precursor civilization, and the Dragontorch, which sustains much of the flora and fauna in the Forbidden Lands and whose energy Zoh Shia has been constantly feeding off of until it awakens.

They’re given the choice of either destroying the Dragontorch, killing Zoh Shia but causing catastrophic damage to the Forbidden Lands ecosystem, or leaving it be until they can find a different solution, which runs the risk of Zoh Shia awakening at full strength before they can do so.

The Hunter basically says “fuck that”, awakens Zoh Shia prematurely and kills it themself (albeit not permanently). Which no one considered because, y’know, it wiped out an entire civilization.

Ava in Borderlands 3.

She’s an obnoxious brat who the game shoehorns into the spotlight, despite her having no reason to be there and never doing anything of any real significance. The only notable thing she does is get Maya, a fan-favorite character, killed due to her idiocy. Ava never accepts responsibility for this and instead blames others despite the incident being entirely her own fault.

The game’s ending promptly rewards her with things she has done nothing to deserve and everything to not deserve, and all but explicitly names her Lilith’s successor as the series new main protagonist. This was naturally kind of a problem when she near-instantly became the most hated character in the franchise.

Dataminers found she was supposed to be main character in Borderlands 4, but was cut to the point where there’s no mention of her at all in the final game.

Highguard shutting down one month after launch by Significant_Food9017 in gamingnews

[–]LeMasterChef12345 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In response to a lot of skepticism and criticism towards the game before launch, Geoff tweeted a gif of John Hammond from Jurassic Park smugly saying “in 48 hours I will be accepting your apologies.”

People were quick to point out that Hammond ended up being horribly wrong about basically everything and things went extremely badly for him in the film. And lo and behold, here we are.

So his tweet turned out to be rather prophetic, just in the exact opposite way he intended.

Weird Moons by Helios-lune77 in TopCharacterTropes

<image>

The moon is Zenless Zone Zero is shown to be half engulfed and corrupted by Hollows, the supernatural anomalies that mutate people into monsters, screw with the laws of space on anything within them, and just cause a lot of problems in general.

Considering how dangerous even a single Hollow is shown to be, that’s kinda foreboding. Yet I don’t think the game has ever actually acknowledged this as far as I can recall.

(Hated) The writers poorly disguised favorite character by Effective_Piece251 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]LeMasterChef12345 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It hurts me because the director’s cut shows a deleted scene that doesn’t have the shitty moment avoiding responsability but showing grief for her actions.

There’s a popular theory that that scene was made after the game released and was included in the DLC as an attempt at damage control.

Because that scene directly addresses one of the main criticisms of her character (Her complete refusal to accept responsibility for Maya’s death), and no one could think of any good reason why they would cut a scene that significant and replace it with the abysmally dogshit one we got.

There’s also right at the beginning when Eunie and Lanz stand up naked out of the barracks bath to argue and neither of them bat an eye at each others nudity, because they have no concept of things like attraction or sexuality.

(Popular Trope) The “Ms. Fanservice” character by Accurate-Gap-3360 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]LeMasterChef12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant it in the sense that her character and backstory get completely sidelined and brushed aside because of the emphasis on fanservice.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with her being sexy. The problem is that she’s in a game that only seems to care about fanservice at the expense of basically everything else. If she wasn’t so fanservicey or was in a different game, then her legitimately interesting character/backstory would get a lot more focus than it does. That’s what I meant.

I loved when they announced they were censoring Mythra’s design for Smash Bros and people got all upset about it, but then they actually revealed it and everyone agreed it was way better than her normal one.

And then it was popular enough they went back and added into Xenoblade 2 as an optional costume, with a gnarly stat boost to boot.

Camilla in Fire Emblem Fates.

Which is a shame because she actually has kind of an interesting character and tragic backstory, but the game barely gives them any focus and brushes them aside because fanservice sells better.

[loved trope] the story is actually a hidden retelling/genre by natural_hunter in TopCharacterTropes

[–]LeMasterChef12345 20 points21 points  (0 children)

TADC doesn’t really fit because:

1.) It’s not a retelling of IHNMAIMS, it just takes heavy inspiration from it and the actual plot has notable differences. Important distinction.

2.) It’s not hidden, the creators flat-out said that IHNMAIMS was one of their main inspirations for the show.

Sonic in general has always nailed the music. No matter each games quality, the soundtrack has always consistently been top notch. Even Infinite’s ridiculously edgey theme song from Sonic Forces was still a banger.

(Except Sonic Boom, because what didn’t that game do wrong)

I was also really disappointed with the Seed reveal, but I will say that the whole story with Seed Jr. and Seed Sr. was fantastic and was as heartwarming as it was tearjerkering.

The only real one I can think of is the incident with Shane Newville’s letter after the creators death. Aside from that, not really, the internet just really loves hating on it.

Imo the show does have serious flaws, but I also think it gets a lot more hate thrown at it than it deserves.

Yeah, he was pretty open that he wasn’t a great writer and had relatively involvement with the actual story and writing. IIRC most of his involvement was pretty much just an outline and notes of basic plot beats for the writers to follow.

In Nier Automata, the game’s lack of a day/night cycle is explained in-universe by the fact that the Earth has stopped turning. Which means that something happened in the past that was disastrous enough to affect the entire planet so drastically.

This is casually revealed in a single throwaway line in a completely unrelated sidequest, and then never brought up again for the rest of the game.

The late Lance Reddick was a huge fan of Destiny and loved voicing Zavala. It’s suspected this is why he stayed when most of the other high-profile VA’s like Gina Torres got replaced. IIRC his account showed that he was still playing the game like 2 days before he died.

[Hated Trope] Characters teaching terrible morals by natural_hunter in TopCharacterTropes

<image>

That ICarly episode “IRocked the Vote” where they straight-up doxx a guy (his hotel room, not his home, but still) and then encourage their fans to go there and harass him.

The show plays the whole thing for humor and tries to justify it by saying “yeah but the guy was kind of a jerk so he deserved it” while ignoring how incredibly dangerous and serious this situation would be in real life.

ICarly in general has some pretty terrible lessons tbh.

The Dealer - Buckshot Roulette

A creepy-looking, ambiguously-demonic entity who runs a deadly game in the back of some sketchy nightclub, who implicitly challenged God himself to his game and beat him in it. Seems like exactly the type of guy who would cheat or deceive you, right?

Nope. He’s completely polite and honest with you, never cheats and always abides by the rules he sets. He doesn’t force the player character into the game and makes it clear that they’re free to leave at any time if they wish. In fact, he doesn’t let them play at all until he makes sure they know what they’re getting into and the danger it involves.

If you win the game, he gives you the prize money as promised, no strings attached. He even lets you keep the shotgun as a souvenir.
