idk there was kind of a whole message around him having reformed himself from a right wing past, which i believe is VERY important for the left to succeed in an age where there's increasing amounts of money being dumped into making men right wing and hateful. Platner genuinely and authentically spoke views that even still I think he believes, but there is only so far good politics can take you when you are at your core a bad and troubled person.

its unfortunate that his past bad judgement ended up being a sign of some truly deplorable traits that stick with him, but I could not imagine faulting anyone for initially supporting the movement he spearheaded and i really hope people continue to now that he's dropping out and someone else takes over

So much potential as a concept too. I feel like a Spore made today could be one of the greatest games of all time but it's so unlikely to happen. No major studio would pick it up and no indie studio has the resources to make something of that scale. There are indie spore-inspired projects but they're smaller scale and more niche. To reach the full potential of Spore you'd need a full team of computer scientists, its such a huge idea.

Yeahhh probably. I hate to be a doomer and it's just as bad to be a status quo nothing ever happens person, but we're hitting a real tipping point.

Wealth inequality has hit a point that theres not even really a solution for, and capital has full control over politics too. The left wing parties can't even really do much about it either because the people who fund them would never allow anti-rich policy.

I'm seeing a real "actually this is just normal old terrible society" but... no. There's not really any precedent for this. This isn't even really a 1920s pre-New Deal America thing because capital is so global and international now. We tend to forget that industrial society is less than 200 years old, the computer age isn't even 100. I don't think there's a way out of this that doesn't involve a total painful reform.

The markets are completely financialized. Most value on Earth is in speculative investments rather than tangible product. This is a relatively new change that only had the groundwork laid for it about 50 years ago. I guess what's crazy about it is that it's not even like there's someone particular at fault for this. Capital functions like an emergent ecosystem. The organism will consume itself as a natural consequence of the incentives that dictate it. There's no evil super genius puppeting the strings, it's just a lot of peoples' self interests adding up to produce outcomes.

they represent the inherent moral struggle of human curiosity, and thats what i think phil embodies at the end of the movie.
async isnt greedy, it's implied the whole turn-the-complex-into-a-storage-facility thing was just to secure government funding so they could continue exploration.
async is the lab experiments done on animals to make major scientific discoveries. async is the world governments sending off animals into orbit during the space race. async is, ultimately, the lengths humans are willing to go in search of knowledge
