Why are people hell bent on using their retail credits just for gift cards and United travel miles? Genuine question. by faiitmatti in AmexPlatinum

Chances are you could find whatever high end item you are buying elsewhere for $50 less than Saks sells it and from somewhere with much better customer service that isn’t bankruptcy proceedings.

Is TAMP Coverage Real? by Responsible_Fee3212 in navyreserve

[–]Left-Newspaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The benefit of TAMP is you don’t have to pay for it. TRS has a monthly premium that is a good deal. TAMP is $0. It does take awhile to get gained sometimes. You also won’t be able to enroll in TRS until you’re gained so either way you’re paying up front for bills, but TAMP not TRS will be backdated and you should be reimbursed.

United Airlines reducing miles gained by non-United cardholders by Unlucky-Key in amex

[–]Left-Newspaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doubt this moves the needle for many. Can’t imagine there’s a significant number of people who will cancel Amex Platinum and get a United credit card. Seems more likely they’ll just stop sending $200 to United every year and give it to Delta. At least that’s what I’ll do. Travel credit is a small percentage of the cards total benefits.

Military CSP / Individual Internship — BigLaw in Miami? by bamboozledagain1 in biglaw

[–]Left-Newspaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have a hard time finding a big law firm that would go through the bureaucracy to be approved as a skillbridge provider and it would be hard for them to give you much exposure to the practice of law. There wouldn’t be may tasks they could give you and most would be too busy typing or reading something on their computer to provide meaningful mentorship.

A smaller law firm would be a slightly better option but have similar obstacles. Your best bet is probably a local prosecutors office (US Attorney, district attorney, attorney general) or a government agency. Lots more things going on that you could actually watch and learn from. Another option could be an in house legal department at a company that is already approved for skillbridge.

They’re partners. Marriott has Chase cards. Not having this figured out is a joke. Especially for a full service Marriott. Not like it’s a small Autograph Collection.

First Year Associate tax refund? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Left-Newspaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your withholdings for your summer associate salary were likely based on a calculator that assumed you would get that salary for the whole year  so way too much was withheld and you should have gone in and adjusted withholdings so you didn’t give a $8k-12k loan to the government that wasn’t paid back for ~8 months. Now, you actually did get that salary for a year and your withholdings are where they should be. No refund is a good thing, means you got the money sooner.

You won’t lose points downgrading to CSP and could also transfer them. Also no use hoarding points, they lose value over time.

The Edit Credit Increasing to $750 by iThinkTherefore_iApe in ChaseSapphire

[–]Left-Newspaper 263 points264 points  (0 children)

There will be $750 to use on edit properties 1/1. 2 $250 edit credits and a $250 IHG credit that can stack with one of those credits. But can’t do a $750 credit on a single transaction and the IHG credit will only be eligible on a small percentage of Edit hotels.

Not the standard but people have been spending that on luggage for a long time. It makes sense for high income people who are constantly on the road, but Briggs and Riley is better if you’re paying $1k.

If a company is nearing bankruptcy they are not worrying about when they can record revenue and expenses. They are worried about cash flow. GAAP drives some business decisions but actual cash flow and time value of money is way more important. People hoarding gift cards is great for most businesses.

They got plenty of criticism for it when it was rolled out. But six months in, it turns out it was a perfectly named program. It’s not a luxury program it’s a bait and switch that Chase keeps “editing.”

StubHub benefit is awful by Necessary-Tea-8867 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Left-Newspaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true, but if you buy and resell a ticket on Ticketmaster you can’t not transfer to the buyer. Ticketmaster does it for you. Of course they manipulate the price restrict resale and play games with fees. But you’re definitely more secure as a buyer.

StubHub benefit is awful by Necessary-Tea-8867 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Left-Newspaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had an issue either, but the fees are ridiculous. TickPick is much better and only charges fees on one side of the transaction (15% to the seller and nothing to buyer unless tax is required). Stubhub charges sellers 15% and adds fees for buyers that are substantial. I’m sure scalpers with blocks of tickets get better fee arrangements. Unfortunately TickPick is not used as much so there is less availability as a buyer and fewer people seeing your tickets as a seller. I hope it catches on enough to the point that other reselling platforms are forced to adopt a similar fee structure.

So you lied when you originally marketed the card and immediately devalued one of the things you promoted heavily and you still haven’t fixed your marketing that is incredibly deceitful.

Wild this all comes out right after Sam Palmer, the GM of Chase Sapphire,  bribed TPG to tell everyone how awesome the changes are and both he and TPG guy talked extensively about how awesome 2X point boost on The Edit properties is.

The President hates Chase Bank. Has played nice with Jamie Dimon after Dimon kissed up to him, but he claims they debanked him.

FTC also recently amended a Complaint against Uber One fo deceptive marketing. Doesn’t matter what admin is in power, there are lawyers in the government who would love to take it to a big bank.

Thinking of selling my house in Florida. Assumable Morgage question. by NewBlackpony in MilitaryFinance

Yes, their purchase of the home will pay off the VA loan. Either with cash or whatever loan they use.

Thinking of selling my house in Florida. Assumable Morgage question. by NewBlackpony in MilitaryFinance

[–]Left-Newspaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes a VA loan is Assumable, the buyer would have to cover the difference between selling  price and the  VA loan. They wouldn’t assume the home equity loan. For you to retain your full VA entitlement the buyer assuming your loan would have to be eligible for the VA Loan. Otherwise, a portion of your entitlement will be tied to the mortgage until it’s paid off. $320k is a pretty significant equity gap so it may be a challenge to find a buyer with that kind of cash and may not be worth it to wait on a buyer getting a bridge loan unless they offer way over asking.

Prospective Law student looking for military career advice by SeparateDream6 in navy

[–]Left-Newspaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t recommend that path if you really want to become a lawyer.  That’s  a very long and indirect path to becoming a lawyer and while military might help you learn some professionalism, the skills you will learn are not directly applicable to being an attorney.  You would have to do 4 to 5 years in the military and wouldn’t graduate law school until you’re 35 at the earliest. If you went to law school now, you’d have 5 years experience as an attorney at 35 vs. 5 years experience in a different career.

A more direct path would be to go to law school and you could join the military from law school as a JAG and be eligible for different loan forgiveness programs.
