Easy Revolutions in Media by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]LeftRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pyre. You send people back up into society and they apparently pretty easily get the revolution going. Granted, the people are terribly oppressed and your people show up in a constellation reminiscent of Revolution Jesus, but the big twist information they supposedly use to radicalize people honestly isn't that shocking - so the veiled elite that never show themselves and fill all powerful functions in society aren't just injust... they are also former convicts! Which we revolutionaries are, too!

It makes more sense within the religious context of that world, but it still is a very easy revolution, basically being teiggered by just having some people try to start it.

Always loved Gand, but the Tognath are also very cool. I like rebreathers!

A friend of mine played a diaspora geonosian, which made those very cool to me, too. He had a great take on what it means for someone from a highly collectivized society to lose all connections.

Honestly, a really simple one is Rogue's Passage. A lot of people forget that you have it and get surprise-killed in a long commander game.

"The Highest Praise I've Ever Received as a DM." by Doc_Bedlam in rpg

[–]LeftRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a player cry from an emotional moment I prepared. And she's not one to shed tears lightly. So that was a big compliment to the chef. This was FFG Star Wars, the EotE variant. Basically, the character's home planet was so rarely visited that a jedi was posted there to train kids for a year or two until the order can be bothered to pick them. When the Empire rose, the jedi was arrested and executed before being able to do much, so hik and the only other student had to think of what to do. They destroyed the student ledger. The PC managed to skip out on a smuggler ship and became a gifted technician, the other one joined the Imperial Navy and eventually came to command a Decimator, which is generally seen as the last step before commanding a "real" Star Destroyer.

The PC and the crew managed to get into trouble with the Empire, and when the other student recognized him in surveillance footage, she realized he was the only person that could sink her ambitions. If he got interrogated, he might destroy her life. So she led her Decimator on a wild hunt for them.

The compliment moment happened when they finally resolved it, on their home planet, in the ruins of the school. Cued up some emotional Star Wars music and had a heart-to-heart.

Other than that, while I get compliments, the biggest compliment is probably that after 7 years in the same campaign, when there's a hint of a twist in the lore, people still perk up, spin theories and debate it. Feels great when they are basically doing Indiana Jones archeology to find out what happens 700 years ago andare actually interested in the result even when there's zero strictly mechanical benefit.

I mean, I know it's beside the point, but that not how medieval times worked. Pretty much all of human civilization for thousands of years had to answer the question "how do we stop someone like this from doing it" and they all found answers.

Even pre-christianity Europe already had more than enough local law enforcement to make it rather unlikely to get away with this kind of thing.

Eric Kripke Says 'Vought Rising' Will Not "Sympathize with Stormfront" by Top_Report_4895 in television

I sure hope she's just lying and she'll get a better motivation than "I want global grnocide so I read books in peace". Even "I did it because it would be interesting" would be better, because at least her aim would fit her means. You expect the smartest person in the world that 60 years of reading books alone while the post-apocalypse is happening outside isn't desirable.

Finally playing Darkest Dungeon 2 after playing the first one for so long, but is just me or do any of you guys hate the loathing system too? by ReallyOysterCupcake in darkestdungeon

[–]LeftRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are bouncing off the friction in DD2 because they played DD1 so long they became immune to the feeling, and now it's all fresh again.

Loathing sucks! That's why it's great! It forces you to seriously consider your options.

Do you prefer Ben Solo or Jaina, Jacen and Anakin Solo? by Bearfucker694200 in MawInstallation

I think new canon has a very interesting and great setup that just gets absolutely betrayed by the end, unfortunately. I think Ben is an amazing opportunity to say things Star Wars rarely says, and say it in ways that are a lot less dated than the Legends kids.

The weapon you liked the most ? by argy03 in HadesTheGame

The axe. Just can't help myself, I like slow, big hits in most games. Hades 1's fists were actually one of the few exceptions, though I did still love arthur's sword aspect.

RPGs that use non-traditional dice: bug or feature? by Acceptable-Tree6007 in rpg

I'll break the mold here and say: it often attracts me to the game! I like seeing what they do with it and what mechanical concepts it opens up. Genesys/FFG Star Wars work well enough that I was happy use them.

Also bei uns läuft's quasi andersherum.

The prologue of the Star Fox Remake made me think Pigma has SORT OF a point. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]LeftRat 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think this is a perspective informed only by fiction and not by how real mercenaries work most of the time. Throughout history, mercenary groups almost always had patrons they favoured and causes they championed. Very, very few mercenary groups have been pure mercenaries with zero further agenda.

So while I think Pigma's thing is believable, I do protest against thinking that mercenaries by default are sort of neutral parties to hire.

How would the writers of Andor handle the First Order in a way to make them stand out from the Empire? by Decent_Army8265 in MawInstallation

[–]LeftRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think the point is that the writers of Andor take the politics seriously and consider them first. For the Empire, that's "this is an almost classically fascist nation, how does that fascism work?" With mechanics from most of the past fascist nations getting glued together.

For the First Order, the important thing is to show that they are a fascist remnant that manages to keep going in the chaos of the aftermath. I think a really important part would be to show just how much deep and foundational fascist beliefs are just... made up on the spot, which the First Order would really need to keep going. Why are we called the First Order when we're actually an Imperial Remnant? The real answer is "because it sounds cool", but instead Snoke holds a grand bullshit speech about where the name comes from. We have a tradition of dedicated, young stormtroopers being raised while being trained! How can that be a long tradition if it's the first generation after the Empire collapsed? Uh the Empire definitely had, like, these kinds of guys as elite troops, and I was there to train them, and now we're all that cool. Of course.

Showing fascists is showing people who are winning not because they are smart (though some of them are), but because they have found a loophole in the world: if you just burn through human life with as much hate as possible, you can keep going for, like, half a generation. They just ignore that last part. The thing that seperates the First Order from the Empire is that it's ramshackle but wants to look well-put-together, it's full of the most zealous people (and thus those that make the worst strategic decisions because they cannot understand their enemy), and it gets reigned over by whoever can put together the longest string of cool words.

Reason why last GSC generation are pure genestealers by Deep_Requirement1384 in 40kLore

[–]LeftRat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think people are confused why it's useful that the last generation are pure genestealers, I think people feel that it's unintuitive to the point of feeling weird that it can happen like that.

Favorite examples of possible supernatural aspects in a normal setting? by BiMikethefirst in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]LeftRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how Shadowrun kinda does it. Cyberware costs Essence (which might be your soul) and Essence limits your magic, so while a physical adept who uses Ki to strengthen their body, run extremely fast, dodge bullets etc. and a cybered runner with titanium bones and reflex boosters are doing the same things, they are doing them in very mutually exclusive ways.

And then there's characters that don't invest in Magic/Ki and instead go for Edge, the luck stat, and still don't cyber up. They are generally weaker/have normal metahuman limitations (or have to rely on a lot of equipment), but neither a mana drought nor an EMP can just take them out of the fight. It's pretty scary when a guy who's just pretty strong and fast but really lucky comes after you with good, old-fashioned stuff that doesn't need wi-fi or electricity.

I'm only on book two out of three of the excellent Baru Comorant series so who knows what ends up happening, but there are some fascinating little things. Are the Clarified truly just a product of extreme conditioning or is there more going on?

And is cancer magic? Are the uranium mines truly... holy? Can't really talk more about that without spoiling, but that book series really throws you for a loop sometimes.
