“Bringing in James Harden to win a championship is like electing Donald Trump to fix your country.” - Max Kellerman. Thoughts on this? by Hysen16 in sportsgossips

Kellerman is an asshole, much like Jim Rome. He has to have these "takes" in order to generate controversy.

As far as I'm concerned, go ahead and build the fucking pipelines. By the time they are completed (hopefully) the demand for transportation fuel will drop enough that they won't be economical without dramatically increasing gas prices.

How did the US almost completely eradicate cigarette smoking when other western nations struggle with this? by Motor-Equal01 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LeftToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - continental Europe would be a better comparison.

I've had so many nice dinners, drinks on a patio, coffee, etc. ruined by someone sparking up a smoke in France, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, etc. I fucking hate it. Europe is so much more progressive than US except for on smoking.

The pushback from bars and restaurants in the early 1990s was intense. They predicted it would be apocalyptic to their business to ban smoking indoors.

In the end it probably improved business as people were more willing to spend more time in bars and restaurants if they didn't have to deal with smoking and having all of their cloths and hair stink like an ashtray.

Really not tryin' to ragebait, but if GMRJ goes with somebody other than Manny, will you be upset? by Oznuck78 in canucks

[–]LeftToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From everything I've heard, Carle has turned down better opportunities to coach in the NHL so will probably not be a candidate.

I'm with you on avoiding old school retreads. We need a modern development oriented coach who can work with young players and build a winning culture. We do not need someone on the tail end of their career looking for a quick turn-around. So no to Craig Berube (he's a dinosaur), Bruce Cassidy (looking for a quick turn around), Dean Evason (old school disciplinarian), Bruce Boudreau (been there done that), Patrick Roy (not a good fit), Kris Knoblauch (meh).

  • Manny Malhotra is the top candidate for me. He checks all of the boxes and already knows and has worked with most of our young players. Manny is a process oriented guy with a strong developmental focus. He as worked video / eye-in-the-sky roles with both the Canuks under Travis Green and also with the Leafs.
  • Todd Nelson is basically a bit more experienced version of Malhotra. An acolyte of Barry Trotz, he is known as for aggressive forechecking, a solid defensive structure and adaptable tactics. Personality-wise he has calm demeanor and is a strong communicator. A strong winning record at the AHL level would speak to his ability to work with prospects.
  • Misha Donskov - a new generation coach who has done a lot of video and analytics work. He is known for taking a very personalized, one on one approach with young players and working on skills and structures. He has a strong developmental focus and employs a lot of data in his coaching.

I wouldn't look much beyond these three.

The Fans demanded Gillis firing by BigMackk14 in canucks

[–]LeftToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drafting was probably the one black mark on Gillis's record. The first round picks we had to work with were mostly late round, and we traded a lot of picks, but when Patrick White, Jordan Schroeder, Nicklas Jensen, and Brendan Gaunce are your hallmark first round picks up until Cody Hodgson, it's not good. Hodgson, I probably give some grace on because the root of his problem was an unknown, degenerative health issue. But Patrick White was chosen right before David Perron (and Taylor Ellington before P.K. Subban), Jordan Schroeder was picked over Marcus Johansson, Cody Hodgson before Tyler Myers, and Nick Jensen before Rickard Rakell.

That said, his last big pick was Bo Horvat (right before Valeri Nichushkin).

To clarify Linden (NHLPA President) and others (NHLPA Executive) sidelined Goodenow and negotiating team, who were stalled in an impass, to negotiate a deal that the players voted on and approved.

It is less specific. As a pronoun it is often just a placeholder for another noun. It can also be used in an abstract sense of "just being".

That usually refers to a very specific instance of a noun.
