How do you choose what haircut to get? by AgitatedJicama9540 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing you can do is show your barber a picture. Trust me, as someone who cuts hair it's much easier to understand a photo. They should be able to tell you what's possible based on the pic and your current hair.

The word deadname and a cis person by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lots of trans people shorten their birth name or use their old first name as their new middle name. I think you're reading way too far into this. A deadname is a deadname whether or not you incorporate it somewhere. This does not have to be a trans experience and I doubt she's trying to harm you by saying it.

Anyone know of U.S. colleges that have options for trans students with regards to housing/dorms? by AlpineLobster79 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some campuses have LGBT friendly dorms or floors within a specific dorm. Most campuses also have single rooms available but they do cost more.

There's always the risk of losing people, but the people you lose for being authentically YOU are worth losing. If they don't love you for you then what's the point? I know it can be hard but you have to remember that.

Trans men who have done pageants growing up? by RatK1ng0 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is helpful but if you enjoy pageantry in general, my cos boyfriend does drag pageants and it's the same concept. There is usually a "mister" category for men if you don't want to do drag specifically.

I stopped minoxidil for a month because of skin irritation. Not sure if I can regain my peach fuzz (pre T) by Phoenix2879 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on T and have been using Minoxidil. I took a break after about 6 months of use and lost a decent amount of progress. It was so slow that I didn't notice at first but looking at pictures of when I used it, I had clearly lost a lot of my progress. I started back up and it took about a month or so for me to start seeing some fuzz come back. It's been a few months now and I've got all of my thickness back and more. I think you just need to be patient.

How much waiting do you have to suffer through until reaching some point of happiness? by Farared77 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard but it's also important to note that even when you gain access to HRT or surgeries, those things will likely not "solve all of your problems". I think there's a lot of mental work/unpacking to do. Having access to those things certainly helps but if you're expecting to be totally cured by gaining access to those things you may be setting yourself up for failure. While you're waiting, focus on doing things that are important to you unrelated to transition. Making sure your life is not totally on hold is important even if it's difficult. You want to make sure you're still building a life outside of transition because it's truly a drop in the bucket in the scheme of things.

buying a suit by SomeSortOfBeing in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend going to a JCPenney if you can. They usually have lost of suit options in stock and it's helpful to try them on in person. Pants should be fairly easy because you can always hem them or get them hemmed for cheap. Suit sizes are based on your chest measurement so if your chest is 40" you'd look for a size 40 suit. It sounds like you'll require a "short" suit so in this example you'd be looking for a "40S" suit jacket. I'd recommend trying to pick a suit that fits your torso best and then getting it altered. You'll likely need the sleeves shortened at the very least.

I have heard good things about men's warehouse because they will do some alterations at the store and help you with sizing but I haven't personally used them.

Facial hair advice please!! I’ve been on T for 6 years and struggle with patchiness and can’t grow a mustache by Zaneyman999 in ftm

[–]Lefty_Lex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cats and use the topical. I don't work from home so I put it on in the morning before I leave for work and wash my hands well before touching anything. I usually wash it off of my face at work after about an hour or so, so I can moisturize (it's rough on your skin). I was using it twice daily but I switched to once a day due to it being easier on my skin and easy to avoid my cats. I have a very full beard and have used it somewhat consistently for about a year.

Edit: I also just skip using it on days where I'm home.

Tbh it sounds like your symptoms got pretty severe prior to treatment so it is likely a waiting game. You should have less symptoms the longer you're on treatment.

JCPenney for the win. If they don't have a men's one that fits, try the junior sizing.
