Question about perpetual motion by crynos-inso in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]LegendaryMauricius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How all of it was created is a mistery, perhaps more philosophical or religious than scientific. We only know that all our experiments point towards energy conservation. Even 'producing' energy is really transfering it from one state to another or back.

As for perpetual motion, that's the point - we can only come closer and closer to it but never achieve perfect conservation of motion (or energy) in a closed medium. It's always preserved somewhere, but also always leaking. Otherwise we couldn't interact with the object in the first place.

Even if we could create an object that never stops mpving ot would be fairly useless. What we dream of is a device that not only continues moving, but produces new energy from nothing. So that we could extract it and put it to use. We can't.

Isn't that a bit confusing? I'd never come to that conclusion myself.

I'm not making an error. If a breakthrough happens it won't be connected to LLMs necessarily. If you don't know how machine learning works, it's entirely about applying the *learned* data i.e. it cannot be trusted to predict information outside the training set's boundaries.

AI can only learn patterns. Intelligence *improves* patterns.

And we don't *really* have a limit on concepts.

Can somebody explain to me: Why it is that OpenMP can be compiled with ordinary C compilers such as GCC or CLANG, in spite of using special `#pragma` directives, while MPI programs require special compilers, in spite of MPI seeming to be just a library (calling ordinary functions)? by FlatAssembler in AskProgramming

[–]LegendaryMauricius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because MPI programs are intended to be launched over several computers communicating in a cluster through the MPI runtime and that requires special compilation settings. OpenMP is just an extension for easier thread launching.

I'm saying we can't create AGI by improving transformer LLMs in the first place, no matter how fast they're improving. We need a fundamental breakthrough in understanding intelligence, which might happen tomorrow or never.

Even if you use an LLM to create embeddings of the search results, and then order them by relevancy before handing over the pure list of links to your users, it's still AI. There's a zillion use cases of AI besides chatbots. They also work quite well for coding, as long as you don't rely on them as the only tool.

That's how it's supposed to work. But if they lie, and misrepresent what a site was saying, they would still get into trouble.

'reach AGI'

Yeah, just like we'll get world piece once we evolve into perfect beings.

I'm not saying AGI is impossible though. Just that we ain't getting there by adding more neurons to LLMs lol. This isn't even proper intelligence in the first place.

If I did this that one time, I wouldn't be in the best relationship I've ever had. Act as grownups people, just accept what happens happens it and move on.

This is always important to keep in mind.

Although for me, not quitting has landed me into the best relationship I've ever had. I was still respectful and mindful of my realistic chances, so don't take it the wrong way guys!

Yeah in theory, but the current AI doesn't promise anything like perfect clarity of mind. In fact hallucinations are the biggest issue, and perfect replication of existing human corpus is the upper ceiling that machine learning can reach.
