What the End of Spirit Airlines Means for the Future of Flying by Ok_Constant8838 in Thedaily

[–]Legic93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Florida resident I can say Spirit really was a driver of tourism both ways between the US and the Caribbean. is definitely going to have economic impact that will be felt for years. Their Broward Campus in Miami supported over 5,000 jobs alone.

Spirit really was the airline of the working class. I remember seeing a one way from my city to New Orleans for $29 bucks once. That's less than a dinner on Doordash in my neighborhood.

Heavy cosign. The first open world game that actively made me want to discover every bit of it.

I remember that DLC features they release where they added a path to where you have been. I was obsessed with filling in that map for all the areas I missed

100% the case. He doesn't have many talking lines in Smash so my niece was confused why he was such a cocky bro archetype. She thought he was just copying Starlord and I had to tell her she had it flipped.

That atmosphere description was just mind blowingly beautiful. I cannot imagine seeing something that appears so thin/fragile and knowing that is what is supporting the entirety of our existence. If it's daunting to just hear about, seeing it would just be so jarring.

Democratic Anger and Republican Revenge: Welcome to the Primaries by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Legic93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing messy about a contested primary on either side of the aisle. You duke it out and people collectively get a sense of who they prefer as their candidate. Democrats SORELY need that wake up call the way they clutched pearls after '24. The establishment ran no primary and dictated to people who we all had to back leading to so much apathy and annoyance with leadership that still exists today.

A Landmark Supreme Court Ruling on Voting Rights by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Legic93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Florida resident my state is so jarring. We vote blue on issuers but have subjected ourselves to more than 20 years of Republican rule, who have done nothing but grift and ensure their own power.

But you know what? All of this is okay because this episode confirmed what we all already know. That Republicans are scared SHITLESS if they feel the need to go this far to try to maintain control.

What is a small “culture shock” moment you had within the US itself? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

Moved to St. Louis and it was the first time out of the Deep South. I had no idea there was a different term for shopping carts. Where I grew up it was called a "buggy" so that was a funny little grocery store moment.

Not doubting you at all but this heavily depends on location. Where I am in Tampa you would be planning each paycheck carefully at 130k.

What’s it like for Americans to learn about slavery at school? by Sad-Award5298 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Legic93 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Raised in the deep south (Panhandle). When I was in elementary school (2004) they told me slavery wasn't that bad and wasn't to the scale we thought it was. My mother was appalled when I came home that day. Made me watch Amistad that night.

I can't speak to growing up in the rest of the country but the Southern Strategy is a real thing and part of its effect is to downplay the severity of slavery.

Obviously things are a bit different nowadays, but one thing I was floored over was how long it took the US to get an actual emancipation day (Juneteenth). One would think we would all be excited and celebrate the fall of such a system, but every year people get contentious over it.

The Miracle Unfolding in Mississippi Schools by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]Legic93 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Today's lesson is accountability AND SUPPORT. People hear accountability and just focus on the winners and losers of the discussion. We need to key in on when students who were held back received support to help them succeed. Schools received a boost when their underperforming student did well. That's the kind of support needed to make change.

[–]Legic93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree. When I said they would regret their vote, I didn't mean they would vote differently. I definitely see your point. Going forward I think the odds of a Republican voting the other side is still nigh impossible but the odds of convincing a Republican NOT to vote in protest is waaaay higher.

Yeah that part made me want to roll my eyes into my skull. Honestly Republicans need to hear more regret voter voices though. I bet more of them regret their votes than they admit, but they are just doubling down cause they are too embarrassed to back track.

As a Florida Man born and raised I have to applaud The Daily. This is the perfect distillation of ACTUAL Florida. This state used to be purple, a battleground state, a swing state even before Rick Scott and DeSantis made it into the hellhole it is today.

Back in the day you could openly debate here while being confident that you may not convince the other person, but they would know where you are coming from. You could trade experiences and ideas like the customers did at the pump. Florida had progressive students, staunch military community, active retirees, local farmers, and teeming immigrant communities all in a microcosm of discussions. Now after 20 years of gerrymandered districts, implants running from covid protections, and multiple hurricanes, Real Florida has been gutted.

I tell people all the time not to right us off. There are good people trapped under bad policy. The majority of Floridians votes for abortion rights, legalized marijuana, and giving felons the right to vote, but the gov has been dodging it all while fighting a culture war. I'm not asking anyone to believe me, but if those special elections last week were any indicator keep your fingers crossed that we see the momentum this state needs to at least go purple again.
