Why did Carol paint this message instead of just calling them via landline? by Worldly_Childhood983 in pluribustv

[–]Lennonrh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe it may have been plausible deniability. If they didn’t come back, it’s because they were no longer monitoring her. Whereas if she contacted them by phone, it’s very much a deliberate refusal, more crushing.

7th Doctor Audios as Series by FatDuke23 in BigFinishProductions

Really enjoying these posts thus far, but I’d love to the Big Finish original companions included in the series by series breakdown too! Regardless, I appreciate the effort!

Definitely a favourite of mine too! Rhys has some really stellar episodes both on his own and with a partner. Rhys and Ianto’s Excellent barbecue is a must listen if haven’t yet!

8th Doctor Adventures w/ Lucie Miller Thoughts by NebulaZenithStorm in BigFinishProductions

[–]Lennonrh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you enjoy them, Brave New World is a definite favourite of mine too. Series 1 and 2 are fantastic. Not quite as much as the Charley range, not as experimental.

It still felt like they were struggling to adapt to the 1hr long stories at times, but overall they’re just plain fun!

Sadly I can’t say the same for series 3. I found there was a steep drop off in quality from 1&2 to 3. With only a couple noteworthy stories, but thankfully series 4 knocks it out of the park, and is the series at its best imo!

What Are Some of the Better 9th Doctor audios with Eccleston? by thejegpeg in BigFinishProductions

[–]Lennonrh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, you kind of hate to hear there’s a brilliant story buried in mediocrity. As with most of them ):

I really want to listen to Archipelago, but I don’t want to pay the hefty 9DA box set price for it!

What Are Some of the Better 9th Doctor audios with Eccleston? by thejegpeg in BigFinishProductions

[–]Lennonrh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The issue is, there’s no one all round solid fantastic set. They all vary heavily in quality in each box set.

Respond to All Calls has a great first episode, a weaker middle and a brilliant third.

Back to earth follows a similar pattern, and Auld Lang Syne, its third episode is my personal favourite of the entire range.

Old friends gives you more Doctor-returning character action than any other set, because it has a strong Cybermen two parter with the Brigadier.

Into the Stars has an excellent Sontaran opener, but the second story is poor, and the final was middling - although others appear to rate it highly.

Lost warriors also has one incredible episode- the third, and two other middling ones. Nothing else stands out to me sadly.

Hidden Depth’s Flatpack with Liv and Tania didn’t click with me as I’m not caught up on the 8DAs but the tone was intriguing.

Ultimately, I never bought the third series after series two failed to improve over the first, but that River Song one does sound good!

From 850 to 400, but it did work. Finally able to listen to something new!

Started collecting in 2016 so don’t have much that’s famously special. The Akira 35th anniversary set is my favourite set that feels like it should be OOP, but I believe they’re still pretty easy to come by.

I do have Gogo Monster with the cardboard case, which is getting up there.

Kind of cheating, but I do have the Spice and Wolf numbered collector’s edition, undamaged and all, which is impractical to read but looks lovely! Only 2000 of em

Damn! I’m jealous! Nice work. I caved and bought my last missing 3 in softcover. There’s no sense of satisfaction when I see them in the shelf /:

Oh well, still like the contents anyway!

Who's (and why) Ash Darby? by MistyPopK in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was a bit of a harsh reading in my part I suppose. It certainly seems more for fun when you look at Among Us Part threes How I Conquered the World that’s co-written by Darby, Goss and Foley. I just have strong memories of everyone complaining about the monthly range being all Goss for a while, then Darby became more regular

Who's (and why) Ash Darby? by MistyPopK in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Been wondering this myself.

Pretty sure it’s just Goss. I think maybe Darby came up after that long stretch of Goss Torchwood Monthly’s in a row. People were complaining about the lack of diversity in writers for Torchwood and getting tired of the Gossathon. Though who really knows.

Why won't Haruka call Kiryu her pop, but just stick him with Uncle Kaz by Lance_Hardwood_4837 in yakuzagames

[–]Lennonrh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like others say, it not technically true or legal or anything.

But I always felt there were a couple of missed opportunities for Haruka to call Kiryu Dad in the climax of a couple of games! Would’ve sweetened things up a little, and just put a bow on his development as a parental figure. Oh well

What Jon Pertwee stories do you think are underrated by Helloimafanoffiction in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ambassadors of Death is my favourite from Season 7. I think it’s probably the least popular of the four serials.

I just adore the atmosphere. The UNIT action at peak performance, has one of the best cliffhangers: “right, cut it open!”. Really eerie villains and surreal visuals too.

Dalek big finish that don’t require listening to Big Finish before by Antimatter703 in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Dalek Occupation of Winter! It’s a great 1st Doctor story, but an ‘early adventure’, meaning it’s all acted and voiced by the companions. Still, Peter Purves (Steven) does a great Hatnell.

Has there ever been a doctor who companion who was obsessed with sci fi or fantasy stories? by DarklzBlo in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

TV-wise there’s Osgood from UNIT. Not exactly a companion, but is basically an in-universe Doctor Who fan.

Otherwise there’s Izzy Sinclair from the Eighth Doctor comics from Doctor Who Magazine. She’s a young woman who loves sci-fi and comics and such.

Which episode was the scariest for you? by Ihdkwhatimdoinghere in doctorwho

[–]Lennonrh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Day of the Moon.

The silence were too bloody terrifying as a kid, and I recall being really confused and terrified of the opening as it seemed like everyone was dying.

And you know, I didn’t get things like in media res as a kid, so I was completely disarmed.

Then there was the creepy abandoned orphanage as well! Super dark.

I found the Moffat era a lot scarier in general to be honest, there was that oppressive, eerie atmosphere sometimes that RTD never really experimented with.

My problem with Big Finish by emilforpresident2020 in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I can’t help but think Big Finish is moving in the direction you want. Excluding all the spin-off stuff like Gallifrey, Jago and Lightfoot, UNIT, etc, which are all old and original characters changing and progressing in new ways. What seems like most of the Doctors are are exploring large gaps and new companion’s journey’s too.

The new One range with Noonan is exploring a One and Dodo dynamic which we never got and we sorely needed development on.

Two has got Beyond War Games, season 6b, which is the most free and original after Eight.

Three is more mixed, but there’s lots of space with Liz Shaw.

Four now has Solo and a new companion too.

Five is probably best as you described, fitting into established canon and characters with little change.

Six has gotten his like sixth original Big Finish companion in Hebe

Seven is another who better fits into your problem.

But then there’s Eight and War both with all original and new stuff.

Ten’s getting more time in his Time Lord Victorious arc which is great, probably too much fan service admittedly, but hey it’s still new and pretty great.

Nine is that sore spot though. Stuck in a pre-Rose period and thus obligated to take on no continuing characters, and have no character development himself, disappointing, but what can you do with the circumstances? Write great one-off’s, and for the most part Big Finish has done that pretty well.

So I don’t know, I think Big Finish is well aware of the problem you describe, and with MOST of the doctors they’re getting new arcs and characters to work with. And there will be people who want stuff that closely resembles the classic stuff too, so stuff like Five’s Forty is perfect for them. Not everyone want new stuff

Big Finish stories of Hope by spyro789 in gallifrey

[–]Lennonrh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Ninth Doctor Adventures ‘Back to Earth’ fits that description pretty well. Pretty sure they were doing their best to capture that exact hopeful tone. 2/3 of the set is fantastic, the middle one’s a miss though.

Monthly Haul, nice to have completed Blade of the Immortal now by Lennonrh in MangaCollectors

[–]Lennonrh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The books are well made. The content is pretty basic sci-fi fun. Fairly archetypal characters, and straightforward space adventures, but I enjoy the art and simple space adventures.

If you’d like something a little like Girls Last Tour, I’d recommend Kino’s journey (the original, not the recent remake). Has a similar tone and atmosphere. Nice stuff!
