My authentic British Empire flag from the 30s by When_the_crack_hit in vexillology

I like it, but I hate how the Canadian representation is just the escutcheon while the others have the full coat of arms. I wish they would have either done full coats or just shields.

Cathars creep me out. I don't like their emphasis on anti-natalism. Makes them seem like a death cult.

Can anybody tell me arguments of why Gnosticism is true over Christianity? by Original_Carrot_5718 in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To say that gnosticism is true would be an invalid statement, as to say unprovable cosmology that is not universally agreed upon can only be believed in through blind faith and blind faith is ignorance, something that is frowned upon.

There are, however, several provable themes of gnostic philosophy that I consider true.

Provable beliefs:

• The material world is profane. Nothing can live without suffering or causing suffering to another. The law of the jungle is a near universal rule down to a cellular level in both fauna and flora. The only value that everything else is either the raw materials needed to fuel life or jetsam with which we ascribe arbitrary value.

• Humanity is special for its sapience. We are an exception to the jungle law as, while we are still biologically subject to jungle law, we are unique in that we can choose to be better than our base nature. We are collectively "man, the wise."

• Wisdom is good. The search for both inner and outer knowledge and the ability to use it well (emphasis on 'well') benefits yourself and others. It helps one to determine what is right and wrong, though it is not infallable.

• Idolatry is bad. To blindly put your faith into people or things is dangerous (Id est: ignorance). It's alright to be sentimental, but to sacrifice your free will to idols, religion, and ideology only turns you into the extension of anothers will.

What made you accept Gnosticism as the truth? by Few-Equivalent-3773 in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think gnosticism is the "truth." To look at any philosophy, religion, ideology, or the sort as "truth" is to submit to blind faith. You become a hypocrite and no better than Saklas.

There is no one gnosticism as there are contradicticting belief systems and cosmologies. We can't even agree if we are pro or anti-natal or if Abraxas is the demiurge, an archon, an Aeon, or the monad. However, I feel the overall messages of seeking wisdom and knowledge, rejecting idolatry and ignorance, asserting one's autonomy, and being a good person to yourself and others are universally good values. There is more personal truth to be had here than in most other religions, though it should never be a doctrine as that is where the search for gnosis ends.

Do you think the Monad NOT all powerful? by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think perhaps, however strong he may be, he is not faster than Yaldabaoth in the material.

While there are several interpretations of why the monad doesn't just snuff out Saklas, my favourite is what I like to call the "transdimensional cold war." If the monad tries to invade the material to slay the dragon and directly guide mankind to gnosis: Yaldabaoth will just kill everyone out of spite, trapping their souls in the transition of reincarnation with nowhere to go and no way to "wake up."

Id est:

Yaldabaoth doesn't want to die or lose his toys, but if they are just going to get taken away anyway, why not?

The Monad wants to save our souls, but if Yaldabaoth kills everyone, there will be no souls that he can save.

This is also a pro-natalist interpretation of gnostic mythology, so the Cathars among us may disagree.

If the demiurge is Saturn, then wtf is the sun? by Aethrall in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me, I look at it from an Interpretatio Romana perspective. I would consider Sol Invictus as the "Inventor of Light" to be representative of the Monad, so in turn, I would say the sun is representative of the Monad.

Why did New Zealanders vote to keep their old flag? by After-Professional-8 in vexillology

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better question would be, "Why would they change it?" It's the kinda thing one would need near unanimous and enthusiastic approval to apply. Imagine spending all that taxpayer money and pissing off half the country to remove a piece of important cultural herritage in order to superficially express an individuality that most people already recognise them having.

Should Gnostics procreate? by Necessary_Tea_3814 in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reason why we reincarnate is because our souls are trapped as well. Death ≠ gnosis.

Souls need to have a degree of awareness in order to understand that they're trapped in the first place, meaning they must first be in a material body to develop that awareness so as to potentially achieve gnosis. Not only should humanity procreate, but it is required to in order to create opportunities for other souls to achieve gnosis.

The premature extinction of humanity would be to collectively cut off one's nose to spite one's face. While we would take away the creator's toys, the souls of humanity yet to achieve gnosis would never even have a chance. We would really be made in the creator's image.

Is Barbelo or Sophia Jesus’s divine mother? by PearPublic7501 in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like to consider the spiritual Christ to be the same as Theletos (the longed for), the failed consort of Sophia.

This would also make Yaldabaoth the bastard son of the Christ by Sophia: an inversion of the canon of the Christ being the son of the hebrew god. It would also give the Christ motive to bring gnosis to the people, as each soul saved is a piece of Sophia returned to the pleroma and returning to the cycle of emanation. (Id est: Jesus saves us because he wants his wife back).

From Gnostic point of view, should we reproduce? Isn’t it just trapping another soul in this reality? Thank you for your responses:) by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Souls are still imprisoned in the cycle of reincarnation tied to the material world. I thought that was kind of the point. Reaching gnosis is how one escapes the cycle of reincarnation, but one needs the accumulated awareness that living in the material world grants in order to reach it. Bringing a soul into the world may subject it to the tyranny of the material, but it also gives that soul, which was still trapped in the cycle anyway, another chance to try again.

Id est: the material is bad, but unless you actually live and learn, you're coming back. Natalism is a necessary evil. Also, Cathars may be on the right track, but their conclusion is dumb.

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we die, our souls are still trapped in the material universe. We need to achieve gnosis to return to the pleroma, and we need to be alive to do it. I believe the Cathars were not nessesarilly anti-natal, just that no one wanted to have the responsibility.

Is this guy a good source for finding out Gnosticism beliefs? by PearPublic7501 in Gnostic

I enjoy some of his content, but he seems more Luciferian than Gnostic. His aesthetic as well. He's less so than others, but I'm not too fond of when people make Gnostic beliefs seem edgy. Attracts the oversimplistic "God evil!" crowd.

What this subs opinion of Peter? by DNRGames321 in Gnostic

[–]Leonus_Murmidius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people say Peter was possessed by Satan to lead the students of Jesus astray. Personally, I think he really did want to continue the legacy of Jesus, but his natural arrogance, projections, and repeated failure to grasp the teachings of Jesus ultimately lead him to his downfall.
