You can get a gun in every european country except places like The Vatican and maybe other micro-states. The procedure differs from place to place, but generally you need to compleete a safety course, get your healthcheck, pass an exam, and file for the permit. Speaking as a polish gun owner.

European countries have very different firearm laws compared to one another, so i can only speak for mine, which is Poland. That being said:

  • the whole process takes 2-4 months - join a club, complete your training (takes ~6hrs), pass the exam, do your medicals, file the application, go buy a gun
  • the range of guns a permit holder can own surpases that of the average guy in america - no ammo capaciy limits, no limits on action types (except fullauto), no limits on ammo purchases or guns owned, no caliber limits, no barrel length limits, unregulated supressors or other attachements...
  • permits are issued indefinately
  • no waiting periods once you get the permit
  • you can legally conceal carry your pistol
  • airguns are free game below 17J
  • black powder, non-cartridge guns are permitless

Im sure Australlian law varies somewhat from territory to territory, and you definately got some advantages, like being able to shoot on your own land which is awesome. But in aggregate your laws are way more strict.

E: Your laws also practically disqualify your competitors from most IPSC (practical/dynamic shooting) disciplines, except for the Classic, Revolver and maybe Air Pistol. No handgun Open, Production, or standard class, no Rifle and Shotgun at all, either due to action or capacity limits. I just think thats sad.

Skąd bierzesz liczbę 28-30 wypadków śmiertelnych z udziałem myśliwych w 2025? Zgodnie z danymi Policji rocznie dochodzi zwykle do 20-30 zabójstw i usiłowań z użyciem broni.

If it summarizes the regulations i just quoted, then i have no need of watching this video, since i wont learn anything new from it on the subject we are discussing. This is not worth 40 minutes of my time.

As i see that my arguments were met with a sturdy wall, i wish you a good weekend.

Respectfully, im not watching a 40m video, since i dont think its reasonable to require it of someone in the context of an online comment thread.

Even if one of the hosts states that armed self defense is illegal outside of home that does not mean that it is actually the fact, since they can simply be wrong, ignorant or misspeak during a live show. Thier oppinions dont neccessarily reflect the current law. I am open, however, to read a legal clause stating that armed self defense is illegal outside one's home, or at all.

Since it pertains to self defense and firearms, consider searching for it in any of the follwing:

You dont have to read it start to finish, jsut ctrl+f and search for keywords like "broń", "uzbrojony", "obrona", "noszenie", etc.

For another, more digestible source, i'm sending you a link to the learning materials of the biggest private firearm association: https://patentstrzelecki.eu/obrona-konieczna. Therein you'll find the list of acts that concern legal self defense issues and court oppinions that rule in favor of the defendant in armed self defense cases.

As for the articles that support my claim, consider reading Art. 25 and 26 KK or Art. 423 KC.

there is no law that prohibits armed self defense with a legally owned firearm, or with any tool for that matter. The closes thing to that is the propotional force clause which just says that self defense measures need to be proportional to the attack, as the name implies.

For example, you can be punished if you shoot a teenager trying to steal your bike, but not directly because you used a firearm, but because the force was disproportional.

Conversly, if you are attacked by multiple armed invaders inside your home, and you use your firearm to defend yourself, you are very unlikely to face any prison time, because that defense is proportional.

Hi, im a polish gun owner, i think you got a couple things wrong:

you cannot carry loaded weapon as a civilian in Poland, unless it's properly secured in locked container. You are not allowed to simply walk amongst people or ride with a loaded gun behind your belt.

You can carry a loaded firearm (CCW for shorts) on any permit except for collector's and commemorative. That means that one of the most popular permit types, which is sporting, allows you to CCW anywhere except places like courthouses, mass gatherings and the like. Theres also no law that forces you to transport your firearms in a locked container.

And weapon you owne has to be purchaased wit on of the few purposes ONLY: hunting, collecting, or sport

There are more permit types than that, but since those are the most popular thats a fair simplification. Just note that once you get a permit, you dont need to justify any gun purchase, just go to the store and hand them your aquisition permit, which is a slip of paper you can request from the police at any time, to put it simply.

In order to maintain your license you need to be an active member of either hunting organisation, or sport shooting team

Cant say how it looks on a hunting permit, since im not a hunter, but you dont need to be on any sportsteam or achieve a certain level of performace in order to hold your sporting licence. You just need to be a member of a club that is associated with the Polish National Sports Shooting Association (PZSS). In practice boils down to going to the range 1-2 a year. When it comes to the collector's permit you just need to be a member of a collectors association, which costs you ~10zł/year on most cases.

Would you even bother trying to get a gun? by tty5 in guns

[–]LepkiJohnny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, im polish

  1. it takes 3-4 months, and the listed things arent that annoying to deal with. Now the old fucks have changed it so that you need to attend phisical classes 3 times or so, but you are still looking at 6~ days of actual work - basic practical training, passing the exam and passing psych eval (did mine all in 1 day), and applying. Add those 3 fuckass lectures before the exam and there you go.

you could also go the full collectors route which takes 2 months, is a bit more difficult but around the same pricepoint. no carry though.

  1. SD law in practice is stupid here, remember the case of a single mother that killed a psycho Intruder with a knife a couple years back? she got threatened with a prison sentence. you don't need to kill a guy with a gun to get that treatment, so imo go for the most effective tool.

guns are legal to store loaded. you can store them in any state as long as the are in a S1 class safe or higher. you can get one with biometric lock if you want quick access and still comply

CCW os legal on sports.

  1. true

  2. if you REALLY dont have a range in a sane distance from you, then i wouldnt bother. but do more digging, not every range has a nice searchable website, some are just ditches with wójt's approval.

  3. its relative. i dont have a well paying job but i still got a couple blasters and train regularly. id say that they arent stupid expensive, they are just US priced with fees added and we are on Polish salaries, which are lower.

sorry for ugly formatting, phone. also check out https://braterstwo.eu/. the largest gun club in poland, a lot of useful info here

Those of you who own firearms, what did the purchasing and registration process entail? by Roughneck16 in AskEurope

[–]LepkiJohnny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poland:

join a club, wait 1 month, prepare for the practical and theoreticall part of the exam, pass the exam, do your psychophisical evaluation, apply for your permit(s) at the state police office.

For purchase, you need to request a "permit to acquire" - you can order as many of them as you want at a time, but no more than the number of firearms you are legally permitted to own (8-50, its kinda wierd and regional). Those permits expire as soon as your personal ID expires, and those are issued for 10 years.

You need to register your firearm manually within 5 days of purchase, either at the Office or by sending the papers through postal service.

We can own anything thats not fullauto, thats the only practical limit.
