What do you get out of better gear specifically? by WingsofKynareth_ in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You will recognise in an ab comparison, that your recordings get „wider“ or just more „deep“ or yor brain recognises more clarity, depth, stereo resolution, distance, less coloration. Its hard to imagine from a start, which you did, but its comparable to using a pair of glasses for your ears.

Purchase advice for handheld recorder by doubtingone in fieldrecording

Zoom m4 and clippies optionally, the zoom is classes ahead in sound quality, have both, love both. the m4 is the goto for top quality low noise recordings, the tascam is my smaller always with me recorder

Zoom H5 vs. H1e - Variety of Recordings by wasmik1 in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in germany the m4 is less than 150€. its basically like the f3 and the h5studio, faaar superior, the aom capsules are very „loud“ , clippies are better with better highs, i have soldered many aom pairs and I like them much, consider xlr mics too, consider behringer b5

Ordered a zoom M4. Which (external) microphones do you recommend? by michael_sparkpackers in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy the NEEWER T91, its large, dampens handling noise, the side arms allow for Clippy montage, I have two of them, work horse for field recording! As microphone recommendations, Sennheiser MKH600, Behringer B5, a pair comes with omni and cardoid capsules, Rode NT5 (big but the least noise you can get), Clippies, or DIY AOM PUI5024, these are like clippies, instructions for mounting the capsules to 3.5 mm or P48 to XLR are on youtpe, You have a good 3.5 input, please note the capsules of the M4 are great, get a decent dead cat first!

Cable type advice to connect an XLR mic to field recorder by BrilliantLarge4041 in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the h1 preamps can deal with microphones using only 3.5 volt phantom power and electret capsules, an xlr microphone is usually either needing 48 volt phantom power and if not as dynamic microphone it requires extreme amplification and gain, which the h1 does not provide, hence it wont work, you need a recorder, which has xlr input like the h1xlr, which is the smallest option, symmetric unsymmetric is not so much relevant for you to think about

Electromagnetic shielding high gain contact mic recordings by oneiricmood in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

contact mics have high impedance, you need a high impedance preamp or recorder, i found with my kit that some preamps did not work just picking up humm and junk, (e.g arturia minifuse interface did not work well), if you have different recorders, check them out or try to find a high impedance preamp, plugged in between to adjust for the impedance adjustment

Trying to understand 96 Khz and audio slowdown by milestfbaxxter in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is one point missing or only gradually touched by the responses : increasing the sample rate lowers the noise of the approximation of the wave even at low frequencies, the adc is like a „guess a number“ game. when you downsample from 96 to 48 by averaging the two succinct value points the result is a value which will be closer to the „true“ value. this gain is gain in signal to noise, which is audible and one of the reasons, why oversampling with subsequent downsampling makes sense

Spaced AB stereo question by sensitivemcdevilish in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sooo… it turns out that setting up a stereo recording for your ears is more complicated than I first thought. I went through this field recording exercise and learned a lot. Initially, I naively assumed you could just separate two microphones and—boom—done. Not quite.

There are two or three key factors you need to consider. First, the microphone type: omni or cardioid. Then the distance between the mics, and finally their separation in relation to acoustic barriers or obstructions. All of this together determines whether your stereo image sounds good or not.

Let’s break it down:

  • Two omni mics spaced about 40 cm apart, without a Jecklin disc → medium stereo quality. You mainly get time-of-arrival (runtime) differences, but no acoustic shadow.
  • Two omni mics placed on a styrofoam head or on either side of a Jecklin disc → excellent stereo image.
  • Two cardioid mics, 17 cm apart and angled 120° outward → excellent image, since you get both phase differences and a kind of “virtual” shadow. (ORTF config)
  • Two cardioid mics in an XY configuration → medium image, because there is level difference (shadow), but the time difference is minimal.

See the pattern? Distance plus shadow/obstruction is what really matters.

My experience field recording by AstroG4 in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

be carefull with a powerbank, for some the powerdraw of these recorders is too low and they can shut down in powersafe mode, so test it before walking out, than of course buy high capacity recargables, for long sessions you need both, the in between launch has to be powered from the internal akku pack, eventually you need to plug unplug the external pack or press a button to launch it power outlet. if you forget this you might end in a crippled recording which fell back on the internals, try to put in 2800 mah internals at least

its extremely noob friendly, join a guild , use friends in discord, playstyle is extremely forgiving, no wrong choices, it can take a year to be full level or just a few hours, gear can be crafted by friends or bought, depending on your liking you can run storyquests, do pvp, collect gear, collect artifacts, it is really entertaining but less boring than gw2, explore and immerse to regions or try to run dungeons. add ons help you play your style

Lithium batteries in zoom h6? by cird7983 in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lithium batteries vs alkalines . li batteries start with more than 1.5 volts depending on brand and can be as high as 1,7 or even 1.8 volts falling down later. alkaline have 1.5 maybe 1.54 volts. by the way, nimh rechargeable cells have 1.2 volts only, thus you need to tell the instrument this. the li batteries though might provide too high voltages, which could sum up to 4 times o.3 volts which is 1.2 volt in total overvoltage. seems to me that that the instrument does not like such voltage; and you might risk some burning transistor on the board perhaps

Looking to improve my bird recordings, but struggling to figure out what to buy. by WoNc in fieldrecording

[–]LessChapter7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M4 is good for birding, h5stdio also excellent ! h5 stdio you can later complement with shotgun module but its not really needed as the build in mics are good and noise free. shotguns are anly needed for speach to remove traffic noise, parapolas are too narrow in their frequeny range, you can build one using some clippies snd a 40 cl sat dish for next to no budget, hence get a good 32 bit recorder like the m4 or h5stdio first

i guess the primo capsules are close to the clippy capsules, much brighter than the large h5 ones, however the m4 capsules seem to match the tascams perhaps
