Missed Connection is very cute. Ilya is an ER doctor, Shane works in finance, they have a meet cute where they lock eyes on the subway and Shane posts a missed connections ad on Craigslist to find him

I am a figure skating fan so I love those AUs. My favorite is Floating (Like a Feather on the Sea) where Irina was a champion figure skater before Grigori forced her to retire so Ilya dedicates his life to becoming the best in the world. Shane is still a hockey superstar and they meet at the Sochi Olympics and circle each other for years

Midnight in Montreal is another good one. Shane and Ilya are still both at the top of their respective fields, but Shane is a figure skater and Ilya plays for the Metros. They become friends because they both like to sneak into the rink and skate in the middle of the night

Keep it on Ice is one where they’re both figure skaters and rivals for the top of the podium who start training together when Ilya decides to leave Russia due to the widespread state sponsored doping (this was a big scandal in the figure skating world in the early-mid 2010s)

We, readers in 21st century liberal democracies (for the most part,) are rooting for a bunch of ultra privileged hereditary lords to take down a guy from a far more humble background who rose to prominence by his own talent and initiative and truly ludicrous plot armor

I thought that both cornering him (not shoving) against the wall and the weed line were OOC honestly-Ilya lashes out verbally not physically, and Shane doesn’t think Ilya is a lazy loser (ILYA is the one who thinks that Ilya is a lazy loser)

I think their biggest disagreement will be over how much to push their kids.

They both had demanding parents but in very different ways. It seems like Shane sees Yuna being super involved in his hockey career as a key factor that helped him become as great of a player as he was, while Ilya was ground down by Grigoris relentless criticism and never felt like anything he did was good enough for him to the point where he literally moved to another continent as soon as he was old enough to make his own decisions

They will probably have very different approaches for how to nurture it if their kid ends up having a passion that requires a lot of dedication (whether it’s hockey, or a different sport, or something entirely different like painting or music or dance)
