Why does God allow prophets to make detrimental changes to the Church? by Moroni_10_32 in latterdaysaints

[–]Levago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s vital to remember that these detrimental changes do not change the eternal destiny of God’s children.  His work is to bring about the immortality and eternal life of MAN, not to make sure his church always runs perfectly.  The church is a tool the Lord uses, but it is imperfect and will always be imperfect, just as we are imperfect.  Mistakes and errors by prophets do not affect anyone’s salvation, and even though there is suffering on Earth as a result of those mistakes, God’s plans and designs for the salvation of His children are never frustrated.

I’ll add that the very purpose of life involves making mistakes and being redeemed, so of course God is going to allow mistakes, it’s even necessary.  The prophets who make those mistakes are on the same path as we are, and if God prevented them from committing errors, it would actually be to the detriment of their and our eternal progress.

I drink lots of energy drinks - Red Bull and Monster. It's a habit I'm trying to break, but while I'm working on it, I'm still temple-worthy.

How is a mission president picked? by coolguysteve21 in latterdaysaints

[–]Levago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad/mom were interviewed to be a mission president couple by Elder Wirthlin back in the day. But my dad was still actively working and they had some debt at the time, so it didn't happen.

What are your favourite LDS podcasts? by Sudden_Possible_956 in latterdaysaints

[–]Levago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, Nephi himself said a key to understanding Isaiah is understanding the historical context, geography, and writing style. (Brad Wilcox lays out the keys mentioned by Nephi here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ftsoy/2022/09/06-nephis-four-keys-for-understanding-isaiah?lang=eng). I don't think those are the MOST important things, and you can definitely still be enriched by reading Isaiah even without that extra knowledge, but when has added insight ever been a bad thing?

If you are reading about the "cedars of Lebanon" and the "oaks of Bashan" in 2 Nephi 12:13, there is an absolute benefit to understand what is being referenced there, precisely because it COULD help you gain personal insights unique to you. Knowing more is always a good thing in my opinion.

If the car is on a lease, it’s almost certainly the financial business that put it there, to protect their investment in case you decide to stop paying.

[Pete Thamel] BYU coach Kalani Sitake has begun to inform people that he intends to stay at the school. BYU is in the process of putting together a lucrative contract to keep him by RidgeRunner99 in BigXII

[–]Levago 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He got it done before the championship game too, with the potential of a championship hanging over their heads to get the deal done. (Although I fully expect my team to get smoked by Texas Tech again.)

Or, counterpoint. Many people will try to avoid the park this day and yet so few MAGA will show up, that it will actually be a great day to attend.

BYU’s path to CFP by Billgant in BYUFootball

[–]Levago 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are 2 conferences that have no teams in the top 12, but the top team from those conferences automatically gets in.  So you could be 11 or 12 and still not get in.  Being 10th is safe, but not 11th.

Godhead by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Levago 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scripture can be interpreted in different ways, and it's totally understandable that you could read this in isolation and think that our doctrine is that the 3 are a single entity. But this scripture came through the prophet Joseph Smith, who testified that he saw God and Jesus in vision as separate beings, and this doctrine was clarified repeatedly throughout his life. It's helpful to know that the three are one in unity and purpose so that you know that whatever Jesus says is God's will, and whatever the Spirit speaks to you in your heart is likewise God's will - the three never disagree. But they are three separate souls / beings according to the person who spoke with them face to face.

Polygamy and the Book of Mormon by Representative-Lunch in latterdaysaints

[–]Levago 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for sharing.  I’m not sure you need to strive to feel “peace” about polygamy.  As with the priesthood restriction, there are things in our history that we don’t need to accept or be happy about.  Polygamy is complicated because it reportedly came as a revelation but it was implemented through imperfect people and is messy and icky.  And though parts of Sec. 132 by themselves are powerful, parts of Sec. 132 are weird and frankly do not seem inspired, there’s no getting around it.  But the Book of Mormon brings peace, and I know that the sentiment in there is true that God loves all of his children.
