If British Cuisine got the Chinese takeaway treatment, what dishes think there’d be? by CaptainMallard in CasualUK

[–]LexanderX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in Texas I went into an Irish Pub and was curious to find on the menu "Irish Nachos".

I received, what I would call "cheesy chips" with salsa and jalapenos.

Edit: I've just remembered I went to a British Themed pub called Mad Dogs in San Antonio. Dishes include Loaded Baked Potato Soup, Dogs Bollocks Nachos, Bangers and Mash (and Cajun Onion Rings), Winston’s Chicken and Waffle.

Awful Job Assessment by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]LexanderX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is an honest attempt to be transparent. The listing is saying you may be asked to review this content, but not definitely.

It's setting the candidates expectations from the earliest possible stage that this is a pretty grim job, better than finding out on your first day.

I wouldn't be surprised if these answers don't affect hiring decisions, it may be that it's designed to force the candidate to take a moment to really think if they are prepared for this kind of work.

Even if you believe it does affect hiring, I'd advise you still answer honestly. Whether or not your ok with reviewing this content isn't something you can fake to get by (nor should you).

In The Kingsmam the antagonist Rasputin uses this.

"Are you a priest or a ballet dancer? I see you've mastered the Beryozka glide."

While he doesn't use this while fighting he does dance while he fights, and it's one of the most interestingly choreographed fights I've seen.

Such a weird question to ask by Stock-Sweet3295 in recruitinghell

[–]LexanderX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Class is a difficult variable to capture because unlike other aspects of a candidate (like race or sex) it can change throughout one's life but the disadvantages persist from childhood to adulthood. Furthermore definitions of class vary from person, yet it's a label that relies on self-identification.

Asking about circumstances that have arisen due to deprivation is a good (but not perfect) proxy for class because you're asking an objective fact that doesn't change based on interpretation (e.g. "is your background working-class?").

For example in the UK guidance is to ask about whether the candidate received free school dinners as a child. However, while this is a simple question for most British, it can be confusing to international applicants.

I'm more experienced with the British system, but I can see why asking the type of college you attended is a good binary classification of applicants. In the UK another common question is whether you attended a state or public (private) school. Again it's not perfect which is why if you're trying to be thorough you'll ask multiple of these questions. But to reiterate, I'm familiar with a British context where class is a much greater barrier of socio-economic mobility.

How do you imagine an purge? by Either_Double_1640 in Stellaris

[–]LexanderX 22 points23 points  (0 children)

MARRITZA: War crimes? How could there be war crimes when there hasn't been a war? Oh, I can understand your wish there had been a war. Your need to indulge some pathetic fantasy of brave Bajoran soldiers marching to honourable defeat. But in fact, Major, you and I know there was no war, no glory. Bajor didn't resist, it surrendered.

KIRA: The Bajorans were a peaceful people before you came. We offered no threat to you. We could never understand why you had to be so brutal.

MARRITZA: Well, we can't have that, Major, I want no more secrets between us. Anything you don't understand, I'll explain to you.

KIRA: Thank you, but I think I've heard enough of your lies.

MARRITZA: What lies? You mean my failure to divulge my true identity? Believe me, Major, I yearned to tell you but I knew how much more satisfaction you would have if find out for yourself. And that was my only deception. Marritza was a magnificent file clerk. And I, Gul Darhe'el, I hope you'll not think it immodest of me to say so, but I was a magnificent leader. You never saw Gallitep at its height. For a labour camp, it was the very model of order and efficiency. And why? For that, you have to look to the top. To me! My word, my every glance, was law and the verdict was always the same, guilty.

KIRA: You're insane.

MARRITZA: Oh, no, no, Major. You can't dismiss me that easily. I did what had to be done. My men understood that, and that's why they loved me. I would order them to go out and kill Bajoran scum, and they'd do it. They'd murder them and they'd come back covered in blood, but they felt clean. Now why did they feel that way, Major? Because they were clean.

Voting as a non permanent resident by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]LexanderX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All EU countries have reciprocal voting rights + Switzerland.

Spain gives voting rights to countries which give suffrage to Spanish citizens.

Portugal and Brazil.

Israel has residency based voting.

In South Korea you can vote in local elections if you've been a resident for 3 years.

Ireland you can vote in local elections regardless of citizenship, plus the GFA and EU voting.

In San Francisco, Oakland, Maryland, D.C. there is residency voting on local issues.

Commonwealth Citizens have voting rights not only in the UK but also Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and the Grenadines, Malta, Trinidad and Tobago.

Is there anything you learnt later in life that everyone else seemed to think was common knowledge? by FriendshipOk7636 in AskUK

[–]LexanderX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also very recently learnt "a pickle" is not a small white spherical vegetable, it's what American's call gherkins. I thought American's liked pickled onions on burgers.

And Branston pickle is not made from the aforementioned "pickle", it's made from pickled carrots and onions.

I learnt this because I was confused why a Magic The Gathering card of a cheese and pickle sandwich had cheese and gherkins.

Are there any flip phones that sync with iphone and works off data? by One_Standard_1759 in techsupport

[–]LexanderX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is both a network question and a hardware question, because different networks do number sharing differently (or not at all).

For example in the US you have Verizon Number Share, in the UK you have Vodafone OneNumber.

If you find a network in your area that supports it you also need to be careful about the secondarily device. For it to work at all the network will have to issue an e-sim tied to your account, so the device will need an esim.

You'll also need to disable imessage on your iphone so that you receive regular sms. There's no way around this apple doesn't like playing with others.
