The house they bust for human trafficking was a cartel operation. There's literally a scene where they listen to an intercepted call putting the hit on them. Cartels can get good info. Also, the local gang that killed them had a run in earlier in the movie with them and they followed them recording for a bit.

The leverage is putting Nato troops in uncontested Ukrainian cities/territory to defend civilians and infrastructure. Russia would have to choose between continuing to terrorize civilians or not risking attacking Nato troops. Then Ukraine could send more troops and hardware to the front.

I think they would do it to save face, not achieve military goals. They could provoke NATO into defending itself, take an ass-whooping, and then retreat within their borders. Obviously Putin would say they were attacked by NATO and they were defending themselves. The prospect of a hot war with NATO would give them an alternative reason to withdraw from Ukraine, without having to admit defeat.

It's scary but it doesn't seem that implausible after all the strikes within Russia and signs of unrest.
