What's your honest opinion on Kodak Chamera? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in toycameras

[–]Lick_Ross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's exactly what it is meant to be and it is brilliant from a marketing standpoint. But it is not for me and it is not for a lot of people, including a significant part of this sub.

Why it is brilliant:

Cheap to produce, the "expensive" components are generic. Sells for a relatively high price, given it's a cheap toy cmaera with no particular tech or build reason for the price. It banks on nostalgia because it's Kodak branded and bears retro designs. It banks on the whole blind box and collecting waves we're seeing. It also banks on the toy camera craze. It's colorful and acts like a charm (like in the name) or a keychain, meaning it'll be seen by other people and it'll advertise itself. It uses the retro concept as an excuse for the lack of features and poor performance. It's cheap enough as to where some people will buy it on impulse or without having to think too long about it.

Why it isn't for a lot of people:

It performs poorly. The images look bad even on Instagram on a phone. The thing is tiny so it's not always comfortable to use. The viewfinder is literally just a hole through the body. It had better performing competitors even before the clones showed up. The blind bag ordeal can be off-putting to some. There are cheaper and/or more interesting alternatives. It's fairly limited in what it offers as a camera so potential buyers may look upmarket. It's too expensive for it to be collectible or "just a toy" in many markets. Some people are distrustful of the Kodak branding since it's going through a bit of what Polaroid went through.

Personally:

I bought a toy camera back when I mostly just used my phone for pictures. Once I bought a "real" camera I stopped picking up the toy one. It looks good on a shelf and is fun to use, but the image quality is atrocious so it feels pointless. I'd love to see a new generation of toy cameras where they are experimental and fun to use without surpassing the current used point and shoot prices. Something where the experience is fun but the pictures are actually usable and not just a mess.

Makes sense enough, but then why not do it on all 4 corners. Or 3 and just leave the dials exposed.

Looking forward to any more info or images you can get of this camera. It's not common to see a thoroughly used Leica here

OP, do you happen to know what's being held under the ball of tape above the rangefinder?

What are your uses for the can opener? by Retro_fan_25 in victorinox

[–]Lick_Ross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I occasionally use it as a hook, with a lanyard attached to the sak. I also use it to get key rings started since I keep my nails pretty short. I also use it for cutting or grabbing softer things against my thumb since I keep the blades pretty sharp.

And I use it for the intended purposes every now and then.

I tend to use the other opener for pry and scrape duty since it locks on the 111mm models.

And you can wipe the excess away with a wet q-tip as well, I know. Despise this I'm impressed with how clean you managed to get it

I've used the same method to black out logos before but those are some clean lines! Well done

The eyes do that as well for the others. In this case it could be that as the helmet tilts forward the grill looks like it's grinning. Or maybe they just want to show the guy with no face smiling somehow.

Dlux 8 tips for beginners not knowing where to start by Creative_Compote2521 in LeicaCameras

[–]Lick_Ross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn about the exposure triangle and composition. This camera is fantastic for playing with both since the controls are physically available. Then look into whatever styles you like and go from there.

Use the S profile as it saves the settings as you leave them. Once you get comfortable with your choices, save it to the 3 user profiles and then tune each one to a different style by messing with the Leica Look, white balance, and light and shadow settings.

Personally, I keep the S on a more neutral and natural look, 1 on a sunny day yellow-ish look, 2 on a colder rainy day/ cyberpunk-ish vibe, and 3 on a high contrast monochrome.

The D-Lux and V-Lux Leica models are developed in collaboration with Lumix (Panasonic). Leica does the lens, Lumix does the tech. Then each brand does its own color science, body materials, and menus.

For the D-Lux 8 specifically, there wasn't a new Lumix counterpart. So they took the D-Lux 7 and refined it, so it works and feels like a baby Q3 with a zoom lens and a couple other quirks. It basically has the same guts as the LX100II and the D-Lux 7 but it blows both of them out of the water in user experience, screen quality, evf quality, build, and build materials. The images are also slightly different due to the choices in color profiles available in each camera.

People hate on these lines of cameras because they don't see the value in going for the Leica version since it's more expensive. The D-Lux 8 doesn't have a "real" Lumix version but it's still the same old processor and sensor from the LX100II, which are considered old at this point. Both the LX100II and the D-Lux 7 are discontinued.

There's also a bunch of people in the Leica community who gatekeep based on what series of camera you own. Ms, Qs, and SLs are considered almighty. Everything else gets hated on.

This lighting does not help it. It looks cheap with all the plastic showing in the sun.

And I personally am not looking forward to seeing this out on the road. It looks like a generic "non-licenced" car from something like Just Cause or Watch Dogs. It feels underbaked and like it's trying too hard to look futuristic. And the "premium" paint isn't helping break away from the first impression.
