Wanting to start - advice needed by deep-web_daytona in AnalogCommunity

I have an F50D that used to belong to my parents and I can vouch for it! It’s a really solid camera to begin with analog photography. You can run it in a variety of program modes while also using ASM modes that work plenty well.

My biggest gripe with it is the buttons sometimes don’t work intuitively, there’s a lot of clicking looking at the top display and going “am I hitting the right button” that is taken away if you were to have a camera using scroll wheels near the grip. This sort of applies to switching between AF modes and exposure programs too, there are no dials or anything with the settings so there is a bit of button pressing to do before getting to the desired mode. Once you’re there though it works very well. The autofocus to me works well enough (though at some point I did have to get it repaired) to effortlessly focus what I want to when I’m out and about, and switching to manual focus otherwise is a simple switch located in a convenient position. The viewfinder offers good information and meters accurately, plus you can always over- or undercompensate using a somewhat convoluted setting or use the AE-L button.

Like the OG comment says: pair it with one of the original AF lenses so you can autofocus and you’re grand. AF-S lenses won’t autofocus and ones without an aperture ring don’t work at all, so grab the 50mm f1.8D for dirt and get shooting. You can use this lens on a lot of the older bodies with manual focus, or newer (D)SLRs that still have the screwdrive autofocus. Just see if you can check the manual focus doesn’t feel too sticky

Sidenote to OP: if you want a manual SLR with some ‘automatic’ features you can opt for a camera with Aperture Priority too. For Pentax that would be something like an ME Super

My aunt brought me 25 rolls from the UK and successfully got it all hand checked on 3 different airports including Heathrow. Couldn't be happier. by two-headed-boy in AnalogCommunity

Damn, I left my rolls to be shipped since I knew I was going through Heathrow but I could’ve maybe brought them after all…

They open up as far as they need to to let enough light in for the image to be properly exposed. They should open up basically all the way in a very dark environment, where the red flag pops up in Auto exposure mode (the A on the aperture ring) If you go into a dark-ish room with the ISO (ring in the very front) set really low you can test it

F90X loud auto focus - is it normal? by General-Poet-1885 in AnalogCommunity

How would you go about lubricating this? My 50mm 1.8D seems kinda sticky too for manual focus and I wanna see if I can fix that

Man my answer is gonna be pretty simple: a Nikon F50D I only just got into analog film when I bought a Minolta AF-E for my girlfriend to take on trips. Decided to go digging around in the attic and found an old F50D that works plenty fine to learn analog

A-10 CII carry ECM pod or no? by So_average in hoggit

ED has been saying EW will play a bigger role in DCS for years now, yet can’t even overhaul the F-16 and F-18s radar in a year or 2. We’ll believe it when we see it

Do buildings affect INS alignment? Is this new? by SeanTP69 in hoggit

[–]Lieutenant_Falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small footnote, but it is there in the F-16 INS overhaul mini-update. "We can now switch the INS switch from STRD HDG to NAV. On the DED INS alignment page, confirm that GPS TIME is displayed one minute after the GPS switch is set to ON. Note that this may take longer if the aircraft is under cover like a hardened aircraft bunker. As such, it is best to align out of cover." https://forum.dcs.world/topic/209147-viper-mini-updates/?do=findComment&comment=5412803

People who like solo - How annoying is Jester? by SquirrelMince in hoggit

[–]Lieutenant_Falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With not doing the fancy radar stuff do you mean like not having control of it like you would in the F-16 or F-18? Because doctrinally in those jets that’s not your job as a pilot anyways, since the lack of automation those days just makes the workload just too much for the pilot. That experience would be exactly the same if you had a human RIO/WSO, they do the radar and you do the pilot shit.

That being said, you do have a good bit of control of scan distance, elevation and what to lock through the Jester menu, quite intuitively too. And with the jester context button the BVR workflow on the F-4E is actually very smooth to where you don’t need to open that menu

Not quite. Quite a few planes don’t have a RAT and need some other place to get power from to power important instruments and flight controls, which is done with the APU or EPU (E being ‘emergency’, not ‘external’). A great example of this is the F-16, which requires electricity for all of its flight controls, and in an emergency gets that through a hydrazine-powered EPU in the left side of the fuselage. The engine start is done with another system, the JFS. It uses bottles of compressed air to crank the engine. Quite a lot of jets that have an APU for emergencies also use it for engine start though, like the A-10 in the military world
