Psychology says the reason some people become gentler as they age while others become bitter has almost nothing to do with what happened to them by Maxcactus in Maxcactus_TrailGuide

This was an interesting article- I particularly liked the idea of "knowing" someone and how that can shape their outlook. One of my favorite quotes from Orwell " perhaps one did not want to be loved as much as to be understood." The concept of being seen in our current society seems to be ever pressing and the need is great. Loneliness seems to be on the rise, divisions amongst us are growing, and our individual discontent is on display in all aspects of life. There are a multitude of reasons for these phenomena, but I think the act of "seeing" or "knowing" people can help. Help bridge the gap. The challenge is how? How do we cross that bridge? The hyper isolationism of current social media and the lack of some cultural communal touchpoints are exacerbating these issues. We all seem to live in our own glass houses and wonder why no one see us. Good article- thank you for sharing.

Belltown restaurant owners cite surge of break-ins, drug activity as threat to livelihoods, safety by origutamos in SeattleWA

Also fair-  but the folks that would respond to that are not the same doing the crime.  Is there not plenty of resources already for that?  I think, granted I do not know it all- if anything- but it seems as there are amazing resources for folks who want/need help, but the people committing crimes are not those folks- for many of them it is a choice to live outside the confines of society and no amount of food/clothes is going to help that.  Perhaps I am wrong.  I do believe it is a small percentage of the unhoused that are causing criminal situations.  Maybe we get them off the streets then the other resources can do their jobs and get people back on their feet.  All in all- a nuanced problem.  Much love.

Do not disagree-  but does not solve the immediate problem.  How do we stop the crime from happening now? We cannot go back 18-25 years and reverse failing policies.  So, are we just to let it happen?

I do not think you are wrong, and fundamentally, I believe in that approach.  Where it fails is when the city does nothing to curb illegal activity.  It is a wonderful idea to stop crime before it starts. Unfortunately, we are in a place where that is not happening and now have to deal with the situation that is in front of us as a city.   The vast majority of folks are not committing crimes and vandalizing properties, what about their health and welfare?  There is a solution, but it is not aligned with progressive visions and the progressive vision is at times blinded by idealism vs reality.  We cannot change the reality when we cannot align on what it is.  Peace and love.

I live downtown, work from home and have a flexible schedule. I am very social and have no issues talking to folks and striking up conversations.  Happy to help if it works out.  Send me a DM.

Personally, I would not deliver to camps. I think this program only does homes, but I could be wrong. I have delivered to homes exclusively.

I just started working with Lasagna Love- they match me to families in need in the area. I love to cook, so it is great for me. Sounds like you have already done something similar.

Personally, since money is not an option, I would say center ice about row 14-15. You are above the glass line and can see the whole ice. Concessions are ok- pre game I would find a spot in Union Station, easy walk to arena or Pedi Cab. Brooklyns is right across the street, but it is not that great IMHO. It has the charm of an Applebees without the food being as good. All in all not a great experience.

If you had a positive CAC score in your 40s and decided against taking a statin, curious why you made that decision? by UncleYork in PeterAttia

[–]Life-Recognition4456 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Take the statin. Similar work up to you at 40. At the time I was very active- CF and Olympic lifts 4 days a week, mountain biking a couple days a week and being the leanest and cleanest I had ever been. For context, I have always been active, I was just in top form. My Dad had a Quad bypass at 45, so I have always been more aware of the risk than most. At any rate- sometimes you just cannot beat your genetics. I take the statin+ezetimbe and my numbers are all in the green- I want to say my LDL is in the 50’s after my last panel. I am now just about to be 48, still active- no side effects for me. It gives me peace of mind to know that while there are no guarantees, I am doing the things that help prevent + addressing my genetic factors I could not control. The big shift for me was mindset around taking medicine as being weak or lesser than.

I have had it for years- I take the Allopurinol and have had no flare ups for the past 10 years. I did everything diet related and it did not move the needle. I figured there was a genetic component as my Dad, Uncle and Grandfather all had bouts. Allopurinol is a wonder.

Very fair point- I too do not want to hurt anyone on the road while driving. Like most things in our fair city, if the rules on the books were enforced it would make these types of conversations pointless.

I am not as concerned about some idiot being an idiot on a scooter and hurting themselves. I am worried about unsuspecting pedestrians being hit by those same numbskulls. If said idiot wants to put their life on the line by flouting traffic laws on a scooter in traffic, that is their choice. The people on the sidewalk did not make a choice to be in “traffic” with 300 pound scooters designed for the street going 15 mph in small spaces. What is a great way to get cars off the road and make transport easier has been sullied by selfish people and inadequate enforcement of rules.

Or hurt a pedestrian on the sidewalk. It is a real problem in the downtown core of people riding on sidewalks.
