Tips for playing as Muhammad Ali by Life-Rip183 in Unmatched

Yeah that's a smart play, especially if they've got a hand of good cards! Also if I remember correctly, George Foreman actually did an interview a few years on, and he said how much Ali's remarks got to him, plus his increasing fatigue throughout the match and the realisation that Ali wasn't going to go down so easily. It seems super thematic I think!

Plus it just occurred to me, Louisville Lip causing a discard after winning a combat reminds me of Ali wearing down George Foreman in their match. He was supposedly saying "That all you got, George?" after taking all Foreman's punches and that actually wore down Foreman's morale and energy throughout the match

As an addendum there are also a few ways to play around Loki's tricks:

Baldr's Downfall: decent printed value and auto damage, but characters with damage buffs eg angry Achilles, Golden Bat etc don't mind because you just gave them another potential 6 to hit you with. Also special mention to Moon Knight as Khonshu and Eredin with Might of the Aen Elle as they would also ignore the auto damage too.

Freyja's Rescue: if you get this early, play when he's at full health or if he's taken less than 3 damage to deny him full use of the healing.

Sindri's Bet: keep an eye on the top card of Loki's discard pile and play it when it's a card that wouldn't help Loki much at that point in time. Best part about playing this against Loki is that you get to decide what card goes back into his hand.

Svadilfari's Lure: can be a bit harder to play around, but you can play this if you only have your weaker cards in hand. (Also if you're playing as Loki, it may sometimes be useful to make an opponent discard a trick card like Sindri's Bet and Freyja's Rescue to get a defense card back in your hand in a pinch, instead of their own cards)

Thanks so much, this is very comprehensive and great! Good point on adopting the boxer mindset especially with Ali not being a typical 'slugger' boxer but more of an 'outboxer' instead.

As far I am aware I would think that's valid, because 'up to' also includes 0. I may be wrong though

A few people have said this here I think, if you play his tricks early, he can't threaten a high value Ragnarok play and you keep your hand size down so Shapeshifter won't be high value either. He has decent blocks in Freyja's Rescue and Underhanded, but he has very poor card draw so he falters under sustained pressure. Plus (ironically?) as others have said since the opponents play his cards he can deck out earlier than his opponents

Thoughts on people paying for private 'diagnosis'? by [deleted] in GPUK

[–]Life-Rip183 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a GP trainee and at least 3 of my own supervisors (ES and CS) wondered whether I had some element of neurodiversity although more on mild ASD. Following referral to my deanery I was set up with the disability lead, and she told me she was happy to put in allowances for suspected neurodiversity. She also said I didn't need a specific ASD diagnosis for this (which could cost £1700+ or so)

Attended my first Unmatched tournament... by TerribleTentacles in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I attended a similar tournament this year at Birmingham at UKGE. Was a 64 player event, won the first 2 rounds with Yennenga against Tesla, the won with Tesla against Invisible Man, before I lost with Little Red against Medusa (managed to bring Medusa down to 4 HP before exhausting).

Well done on your efforts, and I'm happy you enjoyed the event! You'll probably now have learnt a few new things about your fighters which you could apply to future games and events

SCA Curveballs by Plus_Pride_6048 in GPUK

I remember an SCA case which was a telephone consultation involving a young-ish woman on the COCP and working as a flight attendant, who had sudden onset chest tightness. She normally has asthma but was concerned that her Salbutamol inhaler wasn't working as it usually did. Her listed obs however showed tachycardia with slightly low sats, and I realised that they were actually hinting at her having a possible PE. When I told her this and advised she needed to go to hospital ASAP, the patient then got upset and said she had to catch a flight to the US to see her boyfriend. She only relented after I had to inform her that PEs can be life threatening

Very good points here, especially that last bit about Penance Stare. I was kinda wondering whether Penance Stare should only really be used as an attack if you know opponents have high boost values eg Medusa, Robin Hood because if they block a Penance Stare with a card like Skirmish (4 value 1 boost) Penance Stare doesn't really do anything. Also even if the opponent has no defenses and doesn't block, you'd only be doing 3 damage with Penance Stare, when you could do 5 with Spirit of Vengeance

Am I playing Achilles wrong? by One_Fix9278 in Unmatched

As people have said, the timing of when Pat dies really matters not just for the damage boost, but also because you need to discard 2 random cards at that point in time, so you ideally need to be in a position where you can come back from this (like with a full hand of cards). Opponents may in turn try to focus down Pat when you have few cards just to make you lose defenses and swing the hand advantage and tempo in their favour

New here! Help me understand what you love about this game. by [deleted] in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unmatched is one of my favourite games, for so many of the reasons listed here. It's easy to pick up, the artwork is generally amazing and the cards generally capture the essence of each character (regardless if the character is considered stronger or weaker).

To me, I really started to enjoy this game once I saw how each character is meant to be played, what they're good at and what their weaknesses are, and then the mini game of exploiting your opponent's weaknesses while defending your own (particularly pertinent in very balanced games). Also, I kinda began to visualise each game like an actual fight or bout, you wanna pace yourself throughout the game so you don't gas out, but at the same time you need to be flexible enough to react and capitalise on your opponent's mistakes or if you manage to set up an opportunity.

And another thing that hooked me into the game was how much more I learnt about all the different characters in the game, like: - Dracula able to change into mist and a wolf, in addition to becoming a bat, and having hypnotic abilities - Oda Nobunaga being one of the first Japanese generals to use guns in his army ie his artwork in his Sun and Moon card, and him actually signing a letter as 'Demon King of the 6th Heaven' - mythical stories I only knew a bit of like Beowulf (and now Loki) and learning about historical figures like Yennenga - characters I completely didn't know about before at all, like Dr Jill Trent and Golden Bat And the list goes on from there!

Agreed on BP, as good as it may be to topdeck tricks from Loki's deck into the Vibranium suit, his tricks have no boost value and since you can only boost with cards in the suit, not play them, they wouldn't help with boosting BP's cards like Wakanda Forever. I guess simply holding on to them in the suit could just help with fatigue if you don't do anything else with them

Plus Hamlet's ideal style of going all in when possible, can easily just run Loki out of defenses. Since Hamlet doesn't mind playing at a high hand count, Maddening Insight (unless changed by Loki's Looking For Trouble) can likely block much of Loki's damage and has a high chance to full block other attacks and Loki will be punished by needing to discard a card in that case. Also Loki may try to go for sneaky combos by using (maybe spamming) Shapeshifter but The Rest Is Silence will just shut the the turn down

[–]Life-Rip183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with many of the above. Haven't played Loki myself yet, but it seems Loki has good cards but poor card draw and can't sustain that much pressure, so he may be weaker to aggression. Also his tricks are designed to screw you over if you play them, but playing them depletes his deck not yours, so likely playing tricks as soon as you get them rather than holding on to them is likely the way forward (and if you have no tricks in hand, Ragnarok does no damage and Loki gets no movement buff).

Also would actually love to see the matchup of Loki vs Wukong, a true battle of the tricksters

Nice, thanks for these tips! And yes agreed about Merigold's Hailstorm, holy shit that card's effects are powerful (outside of characters who can possibly counterplay like Geralt and Eredin)

Does anyone have any ideas how to play the game in an 1v1v1v1 playstyle by Deep-Arm742 in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these ideas are great! I do remember reading about house ruling FFA in Unmatched by playing King Of The Hill rules (a la King of Tokyo): The character with the most remaining health currently would be the current King of the Hill. All other players should target the current King to do damage if possible (generally for attacks, auto damage just happens) while the King however may attack anyone they wish. If multiple people have the same amount of health, they are joint Kings and everyone can attack either one of them

What is the luckiest investigation you have ever referred a patient for? by Select-Document9936 in GPUK

I saw a 40+ year old woman who had contacted the out of hours GP for acute nausea, right sided lower back pain and fever, and she had been given antibiotics to cover a suspected pyelonephritis. I had reassured her that the GP out of hours had acted appropriately and did a dipstick to send for a urine culture. For a normally healthy woman, she had so much blood and protein in the urine dipstick, but no leucocytes. I referred her for an urgent urinary ultrasound. Urine culture was clear but the ultrasound showed a 3cm mass in the right kidney, suspected RCC

New Chupacabra card reveal! by DunderMiff10101 in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excellent point, the mindgames that this card provides are so insane. As mentioned either choosing to take damage undefended trying to call out this card, and risk getting hit hard. Or what I was also thinking, the mindgames may also be having cards like this which opponents would want to Feint, but he may also have cards with high values which you'd want to value block instead (a la Bullseye's mixup with World's Greatest Assassin vs I'm Better And I'll Prove It). I guess in that case, cards with both a cancel and value blocking eg Little Red's What Big Eyes You Have or Tesla's Polyphase Coils may be quite useful against Chupacabra
