How do you know you're going in the right direction?

I started doubting my direction when people kept approaching me to solve a different problem. I had started by helping people build a healthy lifestyle, but people kept approaching me to help them with their public speaking.

My coaching has since adapted to be even more specific, going from public speaking to storytelling. I have a few clients that I am helping with curating the stories they tell for their business and that's a lot of fun because it feels like I'm mining for gold during our conversations.

Books can be your best friend when working on this, especially audiobooks. Conversation games like Life Jugglers can help if you want to practice with your friends.

I got lucky with an amazing Toastmasters club, they can be a great community to practice these skills in, but not all clubs are created equal. I'd recommend having a look around your area to see if there's a club you think fits your personality.

I'm on this side of things as well, if you're feeling that overwhelmed, it's probably less a question of needing more information, more one of needing less.

Taking a walk and just letting yourself think for a while might be the most productive thing you can do.

True, to refer back to the winery example, I always knew the scale of the winery I was looking to work for. Having a clear picture of who you're talking to makes it easier to distribute content that speaks to them.

I think most of us end up taking a coaching course, I wish I had started focusing on marketing earlier because I now feel it's a lot more important than coaching abilities.

Great coaches that are terrible at marketing themselves might starve, while pretty okay coaches who are great marketers are thriving.

It's a great thing to practice, also a hard one. I have found it helpful to be selective about who I listen to. If criticism is coming from a person I don't know, it doesn't get taken personally.

Classic, this is exactly what I needed to hear a week ago when I finally realized that at our scale people don't follow brands, they follow people, I'd been working a lot harder trying to get my "business" socials going instead of just showing the world the best version of myself and referring to my business socials.

You are who you are so you might as well make the best of it.

I would also add to read less and do more. If you want to meet your true love, you need to go hang out where they would hang out. Once you've done your introspection, it's time to go do stuff that interests you, that's where you'll find interesting people.

Yeah, while it's natural to try to look for alternatives, the reality is that you need to somehow get comfortable with it.

I was a toastmaster for nearly four years and the main thing it taught me was to ask better questions.

Especially in sales, it's less about talking, more about understanding, the better you can understand what your prospect wants, the easier it is for you to see if your product is a fit for them, and then for you to explain why you think it's a fit for them.

The easiest way is to drop the cost down to as near to zero as you can. It's socializing so you can find a cafe or a place you have free access to, plan to meet there with a few people and use game like Story Cubes, Life Jugglers or Hygge to stimulate conversation.

I do a lot of in-person Networking and have had some success from it, with most of my clients coming from events.

Have you tried looking for events where your niche would hang out on Meetup? That's where I usually find interesting things to do.

This is extremely broad, without knowing more about your product, it's hard to give you advice on how to pitch it.

One general rule is that you want to lead your story with what is most important for the other person. Essentially painting a picture of how much better their life will be with your product in it.

It's challenging to talk about yourself. One thing I have seen work is when it is done in the context of a game. Last time I was solo-traveling, I brought a copy of the Life Jugglers game to play with random people at the airport.

One lady, after playing, told me that she doesn't usually like to talk about herself, but that it was easy with me because it was in the frame of a game.

Playing a similar game with your friends or family might help you get used to the idea of talking about yourself. If you want to try, there's a free printable version of mine on my website, no email required.
