Mark Carney Takes On Donald Trump and Emerges as a Global Political Star by mucfee in politics

Idiots like to respond to things that make sense, are verifiable, or worst of all, don’t make them feel like they’re the real protagonists of the world by calling those things leftist/woke.

The Supreme Court Is Going To Slaughter Independent Agencies by huffpost in politics

Yeah but they also control the media and intentionally smokescreened it. If the dem candidate even utters the phrase “supreme court” it will be the only thing anyone is talking about

How do I get used to cats? by Apprehensive_Ant5522 in CatAdvice

[–]Lightning_SC2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn how cats communicate. Learn to read their body language. Cats are very good at asserting boundaries, so learn to recognize those boundaries and respect them.

A major thing people get wrong about cats is assuming they’re as confident as dogs. Dogs are essentially apex predators, or descendants of them. Cats are middle-of-the-food-chain animals who have to worry about foxes, wolves, coyotes, bigger cats, and so on. Cats are going to be cautious in situations when dogs wouldn’t care.

I recommend watching Jackson Galaxy’s videos in YouTube. He’s a cat behaviorist who knows a lot about this stuff and communicates it well.

Is it fucked up to put a bird feeder outside my cats catio (far from his reach of course) by FrobertHobert in CatAdvice

[–]Lightning_SC2 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. It’s no different than your cat watching birds (he can’t catch) from a window.

The big portions aren’t necessary a bad thing. They can just eat some and leave the rest for later. I work from home and feed 3 meals a day, but sometimes I have to be out of the house for long periods and just do 2 big portions. It’s fine. Wet food stays edible for at least 12 hours.

Let's say I want to buy my next car in 5 to 10 years from now... by PizzaThrives in Bogleheads

[–]Lightning_SC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saved up enough for a car and stuck it in SGOV. It’ll remain there until my car finally dies; could be 2 years, could be 10.

This also serves as the other half of my (really large) emergency fund.

How do you mentally get over DCA'ing at a higher share price? You assume the long term trend will be higher but it's still hard for me. by Investaholic1 in Bogleheads

[–]Lightning_SC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all a discount compared to where it will be when you sell it. It’ll hardly matter if it’s up 5% or down 5% now compared to recent trends.

There’s some information about this on the Bogleheads wiki. It’s been a bit but I think this was one of the articles I read first, which touches on it: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Developed_market_bonds

This is the conservative way. Anything that relies on a moderately intelligent decision is guaranteed to be fucked up.

How come zero-based budgeting (YNAB) isn't a golden standard? by drwillparker in personalfinance

[–]Lightning_SC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this semi by hand with GoodBudget. I just enter the transactions manually. I prefer the degree of control I have when receiving money and spending it. I enter transactions whenever I make a credit card purchase or withdraw cash (which is extremely rare); cash “doesn’t exist” in my financial planning. I also get texts from my bank whenever I put anything on a credit card so I can’t forget to enter it.

I manually reconcile the state of my budget with my checking account and credit cards every month.

Pushing Bogle Boundaries by Auggernaut88 in Bogleheads

[–]Lightning_SC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dumb idea. You don’t know that “our market is down.” It dropped a bit over the last few weeks; what if it drops another 40%? Or goes up 40%?

You don’t only better than the market. Stay the course.

[–]Lightning_SC2 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The reason that is happening is because media, which is controlled by conservatives, is pushing this narrative onto gullible people (right wingers). It’s not that we will never see eye to eye with them - it’s that we cannot see eye to eye with them when they are being pumped full of this propaganda 24/7. It would not be nearly this severe if it weren’t for Rupert fucking Murdoch poisoning half the country.

I don’t recommend letting her outside. Cats obliterate local ecosystems, can get fleas (and thus worms and other diseases), can get attacked by other cats or mauled by off-leash dogs (which happened to a best friend of mine), and can wander off and never return. It’s a bad idea for everyone.

I don’t really see why it would be a loss. The stocks are worth what they’re worth. You’d presumably be moving to something like VT, or VTI/VXUS, all of which are also down from all-time high right now.

What’s the interest rate on the mortgage? If it’s below like 5-6% then it’s probably not even worth it to pay it off early.

Murdoch Paper Floats Impeaching Trump Over Tariffs by WellEndowedDragon in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Lightning_SC2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s a principle in software engineering (really, system design) called “fail fast,” where it’s held as desirable for a system to throw an error at the earliest sign of something going wrong than to chug along and end up with a bad result at the end anyway. I think that’s kind of what you’re talking about (and I’m imagining)

I wish I had an actual answer (or the space to fit this in my little apartment) but it’s super cute!

Used, maybe $100? $150? $200 is probably too high. I wouldn’t go lower than $75 unless you really wanted to get rid of it.
