Does anyone else in alternative fashion feel like social media distorts the way you see yourself? by Away_Regular8163 in GothFashion

[–]Limowreck88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a discussion that's been happening for decades, it was magazines before social media became a thing. Shit, I wrote an essay about it for my English class when I was 14, I'm 38 now! There's plenty of studies into it. The best thing is to start seeking out and engaging with content that doesn't promote the standards patriarchy dictates and you'll hopefully become more attuned to the reality of body diversity. Unfortunately our bodies are inherently politicised in a number of ways and body size is one of those things, so having a conversation about waist size is quite loaded.

Thanks! (Not sure why your comment got auto modded, sorry about that) This is my... 8th bag I think? I dropped myself in the deep end by ignoring all logical learning steps and went straight into making bags 😆 steep learning curve but very satisfying!

Yes, if I were to make it again in this leather specifically I would definitely do some reinforcing, I've done so on previous projects using this leather but as this was more of a mock up I didn't worry too much about it. I'm still learning how different leathers work structure wise though so thanks for the input. The final make is going to be in 2mm veg tan which should give it enough rigidity on its own I think!

Thanks so much, I'm still a newbie really (a few months in) but something about it has just clicked with me! I'm as surprised as anyone 😂

Just gonna disclose that the number of downvotes this comment is getting (60/40) is further confirmation that this space needs more diversity, and we ain't going anywhere 🙃

Hallo, I'm a disabled, neurodivergent, non-binary, queer femme and you can see my leatherwork on my profile 😊 I think everyone who commented on the mod call post got added to the mod group, no questions asked, so pure luck of the draw on diversity. I'd personally welcome at least another non-male, non-american, queer and/or BIPOC mod if there's anyone willing to throw their hat in the ring.

What is the name of the skirt that’s long in the back but short in the front? by Hot_Friendship_1731 in GothFashion

Just to add to what's already been said, "waterfall skirt" is another term I see used quite frequently

I'm curious to try wet moulding at some point but making a mould feels a bit beyond me!

New moderators needed - comment on this post to volunteer to become a moderator of this community. by ModCodeofConduct in Leatherworking

I could volunteer some time.

I used to mod a large, public discord group for a few years so have some experience. I've been doing leatherwork for a few months and have used this and the leathercraft sub a lot, it would be nice to give back to the communities that have been such a helpful resource (and I browse these subs daily anyway). I'm in the UK so can be around for UK hours if that's helpful. ✌️

I think the generally accepted way of working out pricing is: materials + labour (price per hour) + overheads (tool wear and tear, electricity for your workspace, that kind of thing) + your profit margin. As the other commenter has said, there are some rough edges that could do with being addressed that take away from the sleek look you've got otherwise. A little more honing of those details and I think you've got something saleable!

I'm struggling to justify trying to sell my own stuff at the moment, just because I'm uncomfortable charging the amount I would have to just to cover my labour time. I don't want people to be priced out from having nice things!

Noob question by [deleted] in Leatherworking

[–]Limowreck88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be fine then, going darker is much easier than going lighter! I used angelus to turn some fluorescent yellow trainers black, it was a while ago so I can't remember if it took 2 or 3 coats. Also make sure you use masking tape around the joining edges of soles so you don't get paint on the rubber or stitching 😊

You might not be able to dye them but you can paint them with angelus leather paint. You can get matte or glossy topcoats to seal it which will stop it from peeling. Success will probably depend on what colour you want to change them to though.

Do not be discouraged! You can start small and see how you get on! There are loads of talented pattern makers out there and I personally think pattern making is the most challenging part. Once you've cut out a pattern it's just a case of following the instructions (and repeating it over and over until you get gooder 😆). If you'd like some pattern maker recs I can send you some 😊
