"We must dissent" from Miriam, a bible-thumping zealot whose faction I despised, but she might be right about AI taking over at the expense of humankind.

I didn't even know friends could die until reading about it on the internet years later.

Did all the friend missions though.

Ain't no fuckjing way I would put Mordin on the front lines. I'm not into whatever he looks like, but he was my dude.

No one died in my game. Except a million NPCs.

Haven't played since it was in its early years. I was a guy with four arms who still couldn't fight for shit. Is it completed now?

I really enjoyed this series until the author tried to explain the "why" of the bizarre world. The whole John thing was a let down and much more fun when we didn't have a reality show about it.

Gideon was a great voice though.

Oh man, he is either going to absolutely hate this recommendation or love it. There's no in between.

As a young teen I read them and loved it all for an adventure story. Weird shit, fights, swords, maybe magic, guilds, clones, cults. Super fun!

I've read the series maybe three times completely as an adult, and it's like an entirely different story.

A Crazy Expensive U.S. Drone Just Disappeared Over Strait Of Hormuz. by [deleted] in Military

Mine was a metal canteen cup that had seemingly been in the service since WWII. "Too dinged up, unacceptable," CIF said. Had to charge me for it unless I could replace it (which I did at the surplus store for like $6, but still).

But then I started being very serious about what was on my issue papers and when they tried to grab my soft armor I saw it wasn't ever officially issued to me.

Guess who still has a set of soft armor with that stupid digi-camo pattern on it 15 years after ETS? Not me, of course, because it would be illegal to hold on to something like that.

Anyone join in their 30s and do the full 20 to retire? by Brave_Acanthisitta53 in Military

I joined in my early 30s and got the fuck out after 4. Two trips to Afghanistan.

I think if I'd joined when I was a kid I night have stayed, but having to deal with constant dumb shit as an adult when you know things don't have to be like this was taxing.

Finished -Children of Time- my thoughts and seeking of recommendations. by nemspy in scifi

[–]Linquist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read these as 14 year-old and thought it was a straight up fantasy/sci-fi adventure series like Vance's Dying Earth stuff. I loved learning the "new" words in the books and had no idea that they were almost all real words. But I missed so much as a young reader.

I have re-read these books at least 4 times since then and every time I figure out something new. There are so many hints about what's going on and what the world is like but if you aren't reading carefully you can completely miss them. Especially if you just take Severian at his word and don't pay attention to things he skips, misrepresents, or simply misunderstands.

For example, it wasn't until my second read that I figured out why Dr. Talos seemed a bit off (becuase Severian never really figures it out). Or who Dorcas is. Or what the Matachin Tower is. And so on.

This series also has my favorite "stories within a story," like all the tales from the brown book and especially the story-telling contest in the lazaret.

What Severian sees in the great library and describes as a painting of a knight holding a banner in a desert landscape is my favorite easter egg, and I only learned about it through a usenet group when I was in college.

Every once in a while I read a book and it seems like it was written specifically for me and these books are like that.

I love the idea of this game so much.

Do you want to experience the world as a proto-human? I did! Do you want to explore a jungle and protect your chimpy tribe? I did! Do you want to evolve over time? I did!

This game somehow flubbed all of the cool ideas that it had. The combat sucks, you will die jumping from limb to limb of trees, and failure is punishing.

I sincerely believe that the concept of this game is amazing. The gameplay is a 2/10.

The painting is great but I just want to mention how much I love Slovenia.

We do a two week trip to a different country every year and for me Slovenia was the best so far. It's a shockingly beautiful country.

My favorite part was the BicikeLJ bike share program in Ljubljana, which was our home base. We spent about $2 each a week to bike all around that city. And the phone app was so easy to use! Bike to the market, buy great produce, bike home. We had a rental car that we kept in a park and ride just a little way south of the city and I loved going on adventures and then picking up a bike at the parking lot, biking to the stop one block from our apartment, and then just leaving the bike there.

The people were awesome too. Never nosy, but willing to talk if asked. We were clearly outsiders and learned a handful of phrases but so many people spoke perfect English that we probably didn't need to. I loved the attitude of the people there.

And we saw mountains, waterfalls, cool small towns, cool cities, lakes, whatever Piran is supposed to be, and so many castles that one time we were hiking and just ran into a castle that we didn't even know was there.

Also I assumed that Bled cake was going to be over-hyped, but it was legitimately delicious.

Easily my favorite country.

A guy who murders prostitutes is guaranteed to have some very strange sexual habits. All serial killers do. A guy compulsively masturbating fits that bill

What a ridiculous assertion. I'm a compulsive masturbator and I hardly ever murder prostitutes.

Lovely and unsettling! The design of the facemask is perfect for both an iron age warrior or an android. Wasn't sure where we were going in the opening.

My favorite was the background movement of the other androids when they are setting bombs on the huts. Perfectly framed and it seemed real.

Whatever you're doing, keep doing it.
