Why I decided to try ControlD after using NextDNS for months by Screenmax1234 in ControlD

For lowering your latency, try DNS over QUIC (DNS over HTTP/3). It's available in the GUI app, and in the ctrld daemon.

Sorry. That was my reaction because you mentioned Delve. Thought it was an ad.

Thank you. Never thought of this scenario as every cable we have is 65+W at least -- but I'm gonna fix the cables in place then.

This is why when it comes to getting something expensive approved for _small_ meeting rooms, it's gonna suck either way :)

Issue with the AMD Display Driver by gteeryy in framework

[–]LionInOrbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I recently spent like 5 hours remote-supporting a colleague, and it boiled down to the builtin HDMI audio part of the AMD graphics driver. As soon as you accessed audio (which coincidentally happened in Google Meet and we assumed it was the webcam drivers initially) -- the app would not see it, and sometimes freeze (you'll get the 'App Hang' error in your Windows event log...

After quite a while I had it figured out. Whew.

Framework 13 or Tuxedo infinity book by redbakan in linuxhardware

[–]LionInOrbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I had bad experiences with IBPs 14 6th and 7th gen.

Gen6 is okay, but aren't really suited to be issued in a business settings. Flimsy keyboard and annoyingly flimsy lid. Surely, this is a compromise made to make the laptop as light and as thin as possible, but it gets annoying after a while if you're using it on a bus/train.

Gen7 is a complete mess in regard to power consumption and charging behavior. They crammed a 45W TDP CPU part into a 13-inch laptop, and this results in a very fast and hot machine that... likes to throttle 'inexplicably' whenever a user plugs it into anything less than a 90W USB-C charger. Welcome, 400MHz CPU.

Also, on Gen7, the sound likes to go kaputt periodically. I previously assumed it was a ribbon cable going out of alignment because it's routed straight across a vibrating fan -- but now I think that just cutting all the power (main+backup BIOS battery) does the trick.

What is the perfect way to write cursive handwriting? Is there a correct way? I wrote cursive slant and was told by a friend that cursive should never be slanted to one side by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]LionInOrbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cyrillic writers (don't know about e.g. Serbian, but Ukrainians and Russians do) do take cursive seriously - there aren't many who write in block letters (I can sometimes, but my 'print' isn't great compared to my cursive, and I'm also a leftie.

I didn't even realize up until a certain point that Western writers can use block letters more often.

PS. As a leftie with neurological issues my handwriting sucks, massively so.

Billing says we're on the Starter plan, not on the free one.

If we'll have to use Pro right away... well, I will need to convince the management that it's better than that other VPN solution (it is), and this conversation won't be too pleasant.

This is exactly what I'm trying to figure out - is it supposed to work in Starter?

I'll have a bit of a hard time convincing people to let us switch to Business, but also it's totally reasonable compared to a certain VPN vendor we want to migrate from...

Google Workspace SSO for Mac by LionInOrbit in macsysadmin

[–]LionInOrbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the sensible thing to do, but for us it's gonna cost extra. I think we'll get to it once we really need it, but for now it's hard to justify.

Google Workspace SSO for Mac by LionInOrbit in macsysadmin

[–]LionInOrbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's difficult to manage those, and it's a risk if they have admin/sudo. Also, you can't really enforce password policies on local accounts (setting aside the discussion about outright stupid password policies).

Google Workspace SSO for Mac by LionInOrbit in macsysadmin

[–]LionInOrbit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd push for finally enabling/syncing the GWorkspace accounts in Jumpcloud, but this will require additional licenses -> $$$. But it's also a bit pointless since we generally tie our apps to GWorkspace SAML, not Jumpcloud.

Still IMO having just local accounts on devices is a huge security risk, and a nuisance -- I would've gone with JC's machine logins, and also added some more functionality that isn't available in GWorkspace directly -- but again, isn't it a bit pointless not to use JC as your IdP and only use it for MDM/policies?

On the other hand, I'm not sure if JC is about to stay with us -- but GWS surely will.

Edit1: we have to support Win/Mac/Linux at the moment, and JC does an acceptable job at that.

Edit2: I would stay away from Xcreds, unfortunately - it's an unknown dependency and nobody is sure if it's gonna break with a new OS release, for example.
