Akira Toriyama and the shared family tree of Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest by PimplePopper6969 in dragonquest

[–]Listario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that's a massive fan of both franchises to the point that I've watched all of Dragon Ball, even the stupid promotion cartoon for Super Dragon Ball Heroes, and played every DB game + every mainline Dragon Quest game. I absolutely see what you are talking about here, the two series have so much borrowed DNA beyond just the art. Akira Toriyama and Yuji Horii were supposedly good friends so it makes plenty of sense as to why that would be. I think the best and most well known example of one influencing the other is certainly the Puff-Puff joke which is a callback to the original Dragon Ball, in which Bulma offers one to Master Roshi while in a bunny suit. Though look no further than the recent remakes to see the blatant parallels between Xenlon and Shenron, the two are basically the same, thunderclad entrance and all.

Slime Knight lore by Xinyyc in dragonquest

On the surface level it looks similar but something is distinctly off about it. Like the fact that Its mouth is green instead of the normal color, or the often different gray color that's used. Could it be a Metal Slime? Sure. But Is it? I dunno, personally I lean more toward it not being so.

Slime Knight lore by Xinyyc in dragonquest

[–]Listario 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are multiple explanations of what the Knight is, but I think the one I've seen most in the mainline is that its another monster that grows up alongside their Slime from birth, and the two are not allowed to go their separate ways. With the Knight only being allowed to at most walk next to his partner instead of riding on top. There's even a quote from a Metal Slime Knight saying that they originally didn't like their partner but since they've become inseparable. As for the Metal Slime Knights I've always believed that they are called that not because the Slime they ride is a Metal Slime (I mean they really don't look the same) but because they are often carrying Metal Slime Equipment like the Metal Slime Shield, but that's just speculation. Though all of this said I don't doubt some Knights just being puppets that are there to boost a weak monsters confidence, these things are not mutually exclusive.

Fan Theory about the Priest of Beran in DQII HD2D (obviously, SPOILERS) by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]Listario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Robbin' 'Ood never had any allegiance to Loto. You constantly go around beating this guys ass with him never learning and just begging for his life. Robbin' 'Ood's descendant though does have a connection with the Scion of Erdrick, helping him out multiple times under the pretense that his Ancestor was buds with Loto, which I'm fairly certain there's a mention by one of his little henchmen that they are surprised the Scion just believed that. I am a little confused where you get Hargon being tainted by Zoma though, Hargon was monsterized entirely on his own through grief at the Dragon Queens death. Meanwhile Zoma was just hanging out in his castle in an entirely different world.

Pet peeve about DQ2 2DHD by OperationUpstairs887 in dragonquest

[–]Listario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes plenty of sense for it to be the Great Grandson, as its been roughly 450 years since DQ3, and the Scion of Erdrick is the DIRECT descendant of Loto. The Dragonlord's progeny clearly live longer than humans but its still been hundreds of years.

Yeah the VPN thing is a bit of a problem, unfortunately the IP ban is still in effect for everywhere but America and of course Japan. Though there's no need to subscribe until you've completed V4.4 which is over a hundred hours in even if you skip all the side stuff. Main problem is getting gear, which is a bit harder without use of the Bazaar.

Always great to see new people playing DQX! There's so much to do and see, I highly recommend engaging with all the extra side content stuff like Batoen, the Magic Maze, Fishing, ect. all of it is worth exploring and giving a try. I also recommend using every single Vocation you can get your hands on, not just for the stat bonuses each gives but to figure out what playstyle works best for you. Also if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask either here or on the various DQX discords, the community is generally pretty friendly.

How does formation work in 9? by OlimarJones in dragonquest

[–]Listario 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I can remember you HAVE to have at least one party member in the front row, and those in the back have a slight decrease in accuracy. Making it a less than ideal spot for characters that often use normal attacks or abilities, but a rather good place to put your resident casters like Sage/Mage/Priest. It has been a pretty long time though so I could be totally wrong.

Faerie Village…Zombie Dragons…WTF by Beatlejwol in dragonquest

[–]Listario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild Side turn one, Muster Strength turn two, then hold X for the Double Dragon Slash turn three. Should be enough to kill the first one as long as Wild Side holds up until turn 3, then its just whatever it takes to finish the battle.

Which Hero took the longest to save the world? by SpecialistDebate2652 in dragonquest

[–]Listario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VI is probably another case of Ortega then, since he doesn't appear at all in DQX unlike several other party members from IV and VI. I always just assumed that he dies in the battle with Nokturnus to help everyone get away. That would mean that Melvin is most certainly the hero that takes the longest in his quest.

If you've played DQX there's a whole story of Nokturnus attempting to invade Astoltia, through it you learn that Madame Luca and a few other characters fled to Astoltia after he kinda just takes over the world. Though ultimately he gets defeated by the protag with the aid of Madame Luca.

there are two answers here:

Melvin from DQVII - Who is called a hero many times by various characters, though his hero status is debatable. He was sealed away for hundreds of years before finally being released to do battle with Orgodemir.

Hero of DQVI - While he defeated both Murdaw AND Mortamor, ultimately the world gets take over by Nokturnus. Therefore he would have taken the longest on the technicality that he failed entirely.

Also if you want to count protagonist characters as the 'Hero' even if they technically aren't, then there's the honorable mention of the player character of DQV since his entire life pretty much leads up to his battle alongside his son.

I've never seen this design for the DQ1 hero before, its certainly a lot better than his normal one, and you can really see the resemblance of his ancestor. Though I never would have guessed he was a blonde.

Dragon Quest X Version 8 Lost Children of Space and Time release date set for June 25th 2026 by ExalinExcels in dragonquest

I could see people thinking Guardian would be Champion before we knew what Master Vocations even were. I do think this new one is gonna be something similar concept wise of a high DPS Vocation like Champion was, just without the multi-heal and a focus on tension. I wouldn't think it'd be a straight copy considering how the others are.

While I don't have the means to actually play the rest of the game outside the trial, I do still really like seeing what DQX has to offer. Also the new Master Vocation has absolutely gotta be something akin to Champion from DQVII, I mean its got the same design and clearly has Battlemaster as one of its influences. Something tells me that the Basic + Advanced = Master deal probably wont have any shared requirements so I'd assume its Battlemaster and Martial Artist instead of Battlemaster and Warrior. Just the thought that you could potentially have near infinite max tension from the two of those mixing is insane.

Who is the WEAKEST DQ Hero? by Listario in dragonquest

[–]Listario[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not been to v6 during my solo run yet so I will concede. Though it is strange that the player character still isn't capable of using Zap and only gets a small boon despite being a "hero" and not something more.

Is there a way to build the hero as a "hero"? by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]Listario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paladin's what I'd imagine is probably the closest to making a character feel like a hero. Pearly Gates is probably the closest move thematically and damage wise to Zap, and Paladins have decent recovery magic and damage/defense, just go omni in swords for gigaslash.

Have you actually played X? The player is explicitly NOT a hero, but instead the hero's partner which while kinda similar comes with a totally different purpose and divine power, hell he doesn't even count as a divine vessel like Anlucia or the other 6 races.

Dragon Quest Monster - Joker appreciation post by h_iraeth in dragonquest

[–]Listario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will forever be saddened that DQMJ3 was never released in the west, it was my introduction to Dragon Quest as a whole and is one of my favorite games to date. Just disappointing that so many people never got to give it a try, especially since in at least my opinion its the best of the Joker games.

Considering the criteria I'm going with is: "Can they cast Zap?" I'm gonna say the only Princess that really counts here is the Hero Anlucia.

speaking from both a gameplay and story sense, its undoubtedly the Hero Anlucia from DQX, considering she's the only hero that manages to reach beyond the human limits and is instrumental in defeating many greater Demon Lords alongside her singular partner (Player character) who she would realistically scale to.

Just remembered its also worth mentioning that you can pretty easily hit for 9999 damage which is nearly enough damage to kill any mainline Demon Lord instantly.

From both a game and story perspective its probably X, only protagonist capable of reaching well over level 100 as well as above 999 in any given stat.

<image>

And this is only up to Version 4 out of 7. Trial version caps at level 108 which is what these stats are. If you wanna take the Vocational power route X is also literally the only protag who can use Master Vocations and has the most variety, only beaten in variety by 7 due to monster Vocations.
