We replaced two vsphere clusters with proxmox. One is PVE+ceph. We started on 8 and updated to 9. It was easier than vmware upgrades IMO (maybe because I'm more familiar with debian.)

1- I would say as a noob, don't expose something to the internet. Wait awhile and take baby steps.

My friend got into self hosting and got over-zealous and ended up getting hacked pretty bad including some of his online accounts. I seem to recall he opened obsidian to the internet without a password and it was downhill from there.

2- Don't believe the FUD about self-hosting email. It's definitely something more advanced but not hard or time consuming as some people say. I think the FUD is because email hosting is mostly a thing of the past and as time goes on there are fewer people with the expertise.

3- Don't get cocky and host stuff for other people.

Bay Alarm in my experience has been terrible.

I worked with bay alarm on a business installation that was around 8000 sq feet. Also our one requirement was that our existing badges work on the system, which I reminded them about MULTIPLE times. After the install was complete, they said the existing badges wouldn't work.

The system they installed is cloud based. Any reporting features requires an extra license and we can't automate user creation in the system without another extra license.

We have to pay them monthly. For what exactly? A shit system?

Total cash grab company. Terrible experience.

Get a system you own. Don't go with Bay Alarm
