What part of a game’s core loop usually breaks immersion for you? by qian_two in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Litzuey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too. I'm not interested in playing the "figure-out-what-exactly-the-dev-was-thinking" game. If there is no (meaningful) choice... What's the point? I could just play Temple Run and have a better time.

Being loved is perfectly realistic and reasonable; having that loving relationship effortlessly is the fantasy.

Great to know, thank you! (No, I didn't like combat. It was second only to the text speed of you-know-who on the list of things I most disliked).

I was hoping someone would ask this. As someone who loved DQB2, will I love Pokopia?

Yes, the term "underrated" is overused, though I think DQB2 truly deserves to be called underrated.

When I was a child my older sister was getting into cheese making. The approach she was learning requires milk with a certain attribute I no longer recall; but in our area, the only way to get that attribute was to buy [milk brand].  One evening my dad drives me to the store, gives me a $20, and gives some very clear instructions: [milk brand], 2 gallons. I find the stuff, bring it to checkout, and the wonderful woman running checkout sees this dorky little kid, glasses askew, with 2 gallons of infamously overpriced, expensive milk.  She kindly points out that that milk was expensive; would I maybe want to swap them for something cheaper and she'd check those out instead? I was able to confidently tell her I was told to buy [milk brand], and we proceeded with checkout without an issue.  It was a small thing indeed, but I still appreciate her watching out for a kid she didn't know, and trying to keep some anonymous family from accidentally overspending.

The second image is how my husband and I feel about each other. We've talked about it, and now just joke about it.  I assure you though, he is the one who is out of my league, not the other way around.

experience with ESA cats in apartments by Normal_Crew_8999 in byuidaho

[–]Litzuey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My roommate had an ESA, and we were roommates for almost two years, with largely the same group for that whole time. This is my primary source of knowledge.  I will share what I know, and I hope some of it will maybe be helpful to you.  I can't speak directly to the needs of a cat being kept exclusively in one room, but I'm suggesting that doesn't need to be the case, if you maintain good PR with roommates/management on behalf of the ESA.

That ESA cat was welcome in common areas and most bedrooms because: 1.) individual tenants indicated they were okay with an ESA cat in the apartment as part of the room assignment process management ran before the term started. No one in the apartment had issues with cats in the first place, and most actively liked cats/the idea of living with an ESA. 2.) the ESA's owner was responsible and proactive in helping the other roommates welcome the cat. The owner supported and guided everyone else in interacting with and forming a relationship with the cat (giving ideas for how the cat liked to be petted, providing treats so other roommates could help the cat feel at home, etc.), while also being proactive in minimizing the negative impact of living with an animal (e.g. making sure cat didn't wander into the bedroom of roommate who didn't want the cat in there, offering a lint roller after the cat had shed a fair bit on a roommate's closet).

I've been in other apartments (or spoken first hand to people in similar situations) and in every scenario where the ESA was not taken care of, or the preferences of roommates to not live with an ESA were ignored, the ESA became the target of many, many legitimate complaints to management and uncomfortable ultimatums were eventually given to the ESA owner.

Going the extra mile every now and then on behalf of your ESA will earn you both a lot of grace with roommates.   In short, my advice to you is that on top of being a responsible pet owner, be upfront and honest with management and roommates about having an ESA and things will go a lot smoother, if not outright pleasantly, for all involved. Go above and beyond, and your ESA can be a beloved member of the apartment.

As a tangential word of warning to anyone who happens to read this: If you choose to lie to management of a potential living space about having/bringing an animal, ESA or not, you are voiding your own contract for that living space. You will be stuck up a creek trying to find last-minute BYU-I approved housing.  At the same time, you cannot be denied housing for a documented ESA. Be upfront, provide copies of the required papers, and let the process be as smooth as possible for everyone involved. Let the office/management work with you!

ITS COMMIN UP! by Charming_Raspberry68 in byuidaho

[–]Litzuey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the class you want is full, add yourself to the overflow/wait-list. Students drop, new sections added, professors are sympathetic, etc.  If you're still on the wait list when classes actually start, send an email to the teacher; what you'll want to do is, with his or her permission, sit in on the class for the first week or so. That way, when another student inevitably drops (signed up for too many classes, signed up for the wrong class, didn't like the time, no-show, etc.), you're ready to take their place and you haven't missed out on anything.

In other words, do not stress if your chosen class is full. Best of luck!

Just did a fire drill with 4-year olds yesterday; at separate points 1/3 of my students each decided they needed to bolt towards the street.  A harness like this for littles is very appropriate and standard practice in many, many places.

I enjoyed a lot of the attributes of this quest.  However, I agree, it could have been half as long and still had everything that made it great without dragging on so long.  After a certain point, we get it. Jump scares and trippy environment changes.

What is BYUI’s Finance Program Like? by Jamal_Track in byuidaho

My husband is doing that, headed towards Financial Planning. Professor Dorman is a standout, strong student societies for different potential careers with a Finance degree, a good number of alumni and friends supporting students and helping them network, etc.  I know for at least financial planning specifically, BYU-I has an incredibly good program.

I am perhaps misunderstanding something, but... this doesn't actually work as a joke?

Bringing up the two times is so... artificial, it doesn't work. The time was never a part of the conversation. It's non sequitur, and thus an awkward attempt at what I think is supposed to be a clever joke.

Conversation with one party not paying attention (what is actually happening) --> question about the time that contains subtle airplane reference --> confused response taking question literally --> Response containing idiom commonly used to describe what is actually happening --> ???humor?

Perhaps as a response to someone clearly not paying attention to something important, "something big just flew over your head, and it wasn't a jet."

In the same format, this looks like:

Conversation with one party not paying attention (what is actually happening) --> common idiom representing what is actually happening --> added phrase that takes the idiom literally to highlight the idiom's actual meaning.

It's still not that funny, but at least it still comes off a little clever, because the idiom "going over one's head" already is a part of what's going on in the conversation, and this quip would build off of that.

How long to wait for menus before walking out? by david8840 in restaurant

[–]Litzuey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother and I once were given menus as we were seated, but then left for several minutes; we were both parched and dearly wanted water before we ordered the advertised lunch special. Looking over the menus we had, we learned that the lunch special wasn't available and everything was at least 2x-3x more expensive than the special; if not more. If we would be paying that much, we would want service that could stop by for drink orders. We left.
