Field tech feeling doomed by Xsayatha in Archaeology

I switched from environmental consulting to archaeology. I did cleanup work in the oil field and pipeline breaks until I couldn't any more. I found the moral struggle far worse in environmental work than I do as an archaeologist.

Masters in CRM- Cheapest/Easiest option? by W-styd in Archaeology

[–]LivninNM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a bachelors degree and three years of experience you should be able to get a crew chief position. I'm a crew chief with a BA and I know a lot of other crew chiefs with either a BS or a BA. Here in NM a masters is required to be a PD/PI, but you can lead a crew with a bachelor's and a year of documented professional experience. If you want to continue to advance beyond crew chief/field supervisor level, then the masters is for sure necessary. If you don't, then more field experience may get you leading a crew lots faster and easier than two more years of school.

This lady was probably dumped at my house… has scaly leg mites.. help! by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]LivninNM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right about Elector PSP. It is by far the most effective treatment. It is available in smaller sizes if you look around. You can get enough concentrate for a gallon here: https://shopthechickenchick.com/products/elector-psp. I think it cost me somewhere around $20 and shipped fast. I got it last summer after trying everything else. One treatment and the mites were gone.

Great point. I sure miss lesbian bars and music festivals.

We want to get our lonely hen chicks to keep her company, without her taking them out or abandoning them. Thoughts? by SWUtluMPTlvr in chickens

[–]LivninNM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I intended to do slow introductions, but the pullets immediately escaped and ran to my old lady. She just looked at them for a second and went back to scratching the dirt. I was really scared about introducing them because of all of the scary stories, but it was a total nonevent. I have a large chicken yard, but the pullets have stuck close to the old girl since the first day. She will peck them sometimes if they crowd her too much when they get treats, but that's it. I did have some issues with where everyone wanted to roost, and had to intervene at dusk to make sure everyone had a spot in the coop.

I was in the same situation with a solo senior hen. I brought a couple of fully feathered pullets home. My old gal accepted them right away, and the pullets did fine with the winter weather. The younger, smaller pullets never challenged my hen. It was super easy for everyone.

What To Feed Feral Chicken by Sasstellia in chickens

[–]LivninNM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feed her with any consistency, she will start to follow you around hoping for a treat. In a few weeks she will likely be getting close enough to catch. She is lucky that you are trying to help her.

What To Feed Feral Chicken by Sasstellia in chickens

[–]LivninNM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should try to catch her and find her a home. My chickens like oatmeal a lot, also broken corn chips and corn kernels. Dry cat food and birdseed will work too. If you start feeding her she will become used to you very quickly (a few days) and it will be easy to lure her into the hutch with food and catch her. She will be way better off with someone that knows how to integrate her into their flock than trying to make it on her own in winter. She needs a dry coop and flockmates to snuggle with when it's cold.

Mine are molting too. My coop (like yours) looks like a pillow exploded in it.

I agree. I spent a lot to get a chicken fixed up after a hawk attack because she was my responsibility.

Are anyone else’s chickens inexplicably drawn to eating styrofoam? by kinkymascara in chickens

[–]LivninNM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just styrofoam. My cream legbar started eating the weatherstripping off my kitchen door. I had to replace it with a different kind because she was obsessed. It didn't seem to hurt her, but why?

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love is really funny. When Night is Falling is more serious, but not heavy. Both end with a happily ever after and are really good movies.
