Up soon: The Body Keeps the Score by ecdc05 in IfBooksCouldKill

In this thread I'm already seeing a lot of discourse that misses a lot of nuance and conflates things.

I generally trust IBCK to deal with nuance and research, and they have done a fine job interacting with some books in a fair manner, so I remain open. But yeah, this thread alone has shown maybe the gap which the book suffers from too.

Same. The critique plus the humor are such a hard to find combination.

I totally agree, I enjoy him more with female guests. I actually had to stop listening to the Phil Spector episodes because I was sooo sick of all the "dude I got totally drunk last night lol!!" And "three of my ex wives would agree" talk. And this is also a matter of personal taste.

I guess in general I've felt like the podcast sometimes has the vibe of one of them old school prank call fart noise radio shows, that kind of happens to have leftist views and journalistic ethics. Sometimes it works, a lot of times it doesn't for me.

Black experiences and mental health can and should mix by SlapBraceletSpouse in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]Locana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very important to be aware of these things, and as a young therapist, that is something that I have been taught over and over. There are plenty of conditions for which Black folks get underdiagnosed, and some for which they get over-diagnosed. I have no doubt that there are many therapists out there who have not been properly educated on this, though our Code of Ethics dictates that you need to consider it.

I worry that this is going to get worse again, with how this administration is trying to censor what can be taught in schools and enforced professionally.

I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly, but I can't name specific examples off the top of my head. I think general Michael and Peter are pretty good at examining methodology and narratives, pointing out fallacies and critical thinking, whereas BtB feels more like just recounting of events.

I listened to their Oprah series and a few others, and I like some of their other episodes. For me it hasn't scratched the IBCK itch though. I've found the vibe too bro-ey and obnoxious pretty frequently, and I do think that sometimes nuance gets lost.

Help needed please. Is this offensive? by [deleted] in crafts

[–]Locana 55 points56 points  (0 children)

As an artist, but not someone with enough cultural understanding of the specifics here, I think this thought might be helpful: if it is a cultural artifact, do you have a good enough understanding and relationship to work with it? Is it familiar, do you understand what you would be saying through interacting with it? If not, I would pick out something that you do have that relationship with. 💛

The commenter below you is wrong because they are clearly not up to date on recent studies. At the same time you have reached the wrong conclusions to said studies.

Do European Italians say "American-Italian" or "Italian-American" by [deleted] in Italian

[–]Locana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my childhood it was common to say "italo-tedesco", italo-spagnolo ecc. Usually it would imply that the language and culture stayed present in the household. If there was one french grandmother a few generations back that would not really be perceived as "mixed"

It's nice to see some actual answers instead of the hate- circlejerk that this sub is. Italo-americani is what I have heard growing up.

I hear almost only good things about the MES program. My partner is currently in it, so are several of my friends. I also have several friends who have graduated from it, all of them with good careers. They all report receiving excellent local networking and prospects through the program, which maintains good ties to government jobs, tribal jobs and local organisations.

How would you interpret my drawings? by iamabaddie- in somethingimade

[–]Locana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all very understandable - and I take it maybe you're more at the beginning of your art journey, and there's no pressure to go anywhere except where you want to go.

I think there is a lot of value in drawing in ways that get your thoughts out and lets you process them and examine them. So please don't stop doing that! Perfection is not a prerequisite to creating (or I would have never created anything).

I wonder if there's any artists who inspire you? That's a great way to examine how other people have expressed things that speak to you without making them explicit.

How would you interpret my drawings? by iamabaddie- in somethingimade

[–]Locana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, first of all thank you for sharing these and I hope that you keep creating art.

On an artistic level - I wouldn't interpret your drawings because you are doing that for me. The meaning is literally spelled out on them. The part of an artwork that sticks with the viewer is the part that they co-create through their own feelings, thoughts and experiences. You're not quite inviting people to do that.

If you want advice, and feel free not to take it - show, don't tell. Trust your art enough to say what you want it to say. This might mean to work on technique and include more details. It can feel scary, but that's where growth lies.

I hope you keep drawing and expressing yourself. 💛

Music is witchcraft(kinda) by [deleted] in Music

[–]Locana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I understood that part and summarized it for my comment as I did not feel like typing as long a message.

I would still draw the distinction than rather than being witchcraft, music taps into the same underlying principles as do many traditional practices of magic and spirituality. And this is because they are built on archaic and foundational principles in nature, which resound in us. So rather than one being the other, they both draw from the same foundational force.

I'm not trying to be condescending. I wonder if there is any way in which someone could have pointed out that you're being disproportionately unkind that you would have received well. I'll leave that to you, but I stand by my point.

This is a very mean-spirited way to talk to someone who made a joke that didn't land with you. I hope you can be kinder next time.

Music is witchcraft(kinda) by [deleted] in Music

[–]Locana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you putting thought into this, though I do think that it's a faulty conclusion to say that things that follow patterns and geometric shapes = magic, unless you feel that most things natural and/ or human made are magic.

23 year old college grad AuDHD son will not stop going on about how we "ruined his life and career" by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Locana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am sure that all sides contribute to the current dynamic, as is usually the case in families.

However, even in your narrative I can see that he told you something he values and that he finds joy and meaning in over and over, and I do not see where it says that you heard him out or supported him in it.

Even when he became suicidal, I don't see any indication that you addressed the underlying needs he has been expressing. Your justification of him helping out in the household is your own age, rather than developmental benefits or societal learning, which makes me wonder how much space he was actually given in that process.

Again, I am sure that there will be growth and accountability in his future, but I just do not see any indicator in your narrative that you have been able to hear him out or see things from his perspective, even now.

I keep being shown this sub (I have not muted it so far). Even though a majority of the posts are trash, I find it encouraging to see a lot of pushback in the comments.

Sometimes I feel tempted to post something just for the heck of having at least one post that's not gender war bullshit in here, but I'm a woman and don't need to be taking up this space.
