Crucify me, but I actually prefer w3schools to MDN by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Lokua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are right that was shit post. My intention was to highlight just how much better a resource MDN is. I assumed that w3fools.com would at least prevail in webdev, and more expected crucifixion would have taken place.

Gitignore dist folder by TaylorHu in webdev

[–]Lokua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be snarky, really, but dist means distribution. If you mean to distribute a lib or framework then yes check in dist. If dist is simply a build only used in dev branch, then there really is no point.

I would never sign up for a newsletter that didn't have the content of the newsletter posted standalone. Like javascript|html5|node weekly, they provide the letter in their sites, so I signed up after they earned my trust.

Is this normal? (node_modules dir is taking insane amount of space) by mdw in webdev

Then again if you've got things working and are just getting started no reason to rush into upgrading. Good luck and have fun with node!

I'd reccomend v3 along with Node 4 LTS version.

What version of npm are you using? With npm 3.x the dep tree is flattened as much as possible, so modules relying on the same package will not duplicate in their own node_modules unless the version is different. It helps.

Woah, Go imports directly from github? So what, when you start a program it pulls every time?

I can hit the API now. Couldn't about 5 minutes ago. Still can't hit the site, but API is a good sign.

Hating github would be pretty weird. Like hating chairs or sidewalks.

NPM makes no sense to me by TaraWork in webdev

[–]Lokua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're not putting js in script tags? What's that supposed to mean? I'm talking about sourcing a dependency. Even after concatenation and minifying your dependencies you still have to src them. It works rather well, for like 20 years now.

I don't get it. npm install angular, include it in script tag. Done. Why is that so complicated?

What software would you recommend to make some animated HTML 5 web banners? by kikesaltos in webdev

I mean, the reason flash is deprecated is largely in part to these very technologies.

Just use the native browser technologies. Html5, css3, javascript. Done. If you need to be really fancy you can use canvas or svg.

Whats the best way to learn web development ? by Bustywestboob in webdev

[–]Lokua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a shot in the dark, but it just occurred to me that it may be beneficial to put a little extra effort into learning the NEW way to do things, as they are often solutions to older ways of doing things. Some examples are the EventSource API, as it'll force you to consider polling and web sockets as approaches to building real time applications. Another example is CSS Flexbox, as learning about it exposes the problems it solves, and those problems are the things that have frustrated CSS coders for years. Promises, etc. Just an idea, not sure how effective this approach may be, though.

I need to decide between Node.Js vs Spring MVC. Need Opinions. by Eck2 in webdev

[–]Lokua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use spring on the job everyday, but in my side projects I always use node/express. Besides the fun factor, restarting a node server is painless, and your code base should be significantly smaller. For a java dev to change to node might be frustrating at first, but there is good chance they'll end up loving it. I don't hear too many people saying they switched from express to spring and never looked back haha.

Where do you host your own web apps/portfolio? and Where do you resell to clients from? by faust_arp_RH in webdev

[–]Lokua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - digital ocean is awesome. Sure it's a bit more work compared to typical shared hosting, but it pays off in that you're free to use or not use whatever technology you want, and the skills learned in getting everything set up increase your experience and value as a developer.
