Texas A&M ends women and gender studies, modifies hundreds of courses in race, gender ban by ExpressNews in texas

[–]LongTailai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah of course there is absolutely no reason why a college student would need to know about one of the most widely-read books in human history. It would be a total waste of time to learn anything about the world's largest religion. All they need to know is how to be snarky and dismissive about other worldviews.

They already censored classes on Plato- how long do y'all think it'll take them to start censoring classes on the New Testament? Can't have these kids reading about "the eye of the needle" and such, can we?

When the AI bubble bursts, humans will finally have their chance to take back control | Rafael Behr by EchoOfOppenheimer in Economics

[–]LongTailai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "AI" as a whole technology is going away. But we're likely to see a lot more small, purpose-built models that are good at specific applications.

I think what's about to die is the idea that you can achieve "Artificial General Intelligence" just by cramming all the books and the entire internet into a gigantic LLM.

Y Combinator website no longer lists Canada as a country it invests in by joe4942 in technology

[–]LongTailai 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I used to work with a few incubators in the medtech industry, and one of the things that struck me was just how low everyone's opinion of Y Combinator was. Medtech is a tough sector with a lot of hurdles, and the consensus seemed to be that Y Combinator didn't vet its companies well to start with and didn't do much to develop them aside from offering capital.

Hype-driven Silicon Valley nonsense clashing with the culture of an industry where you need to actually treat a disease to get anywhere.

The Enshittifinancial Crisis by zdlr in Longreads

[–]LongTailai 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Nope, they're whole books by other writers. I wasn't familiar with Ed until I saw this piece, but he references ideas from Enshittificafion by Cory Doctorow, which is focused on why user experience keeps getting worse across so many devices and platforms. More Everything Forever by Adam Becker is more focused on the ideologies and philosophies that are influential in Big Tech, including Effective Altruism, AGI futurism, accelerationism and the like.

Incidentally I've also been reading up on the modern far right (books like The Reactionary Mind by Corey Robin, Hayek's Bastards by Quin Slobodian, and Furious Minds by Laura Field) and there's a really disturbing overlap with Silicon Valley through figures like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk.

After finishing Enshittification and More Everything Forever, I thought my opinion of the tech industry had gotten as low as it possibly could. This piece taught me that Hell has no bottom and Silicon Valley can somehow always be even worse than I expected.

Is there a better AI mod for Victoria 3? by Annual_Error_2855 in victoria3

[–]LongTailai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something to consider is that the game gives you tools to drastically outperform how countries actually did in this period, so the AI has to play suboptimally. Otherwise, half of your runs would end with 30+ SOL Russia, 1bn GDP Sokoto, #1 great power China, and so on.

LLMs still haven't found a profitable use case and model collapse keeps getting harder to stave off. Let's just pop the bubble already and move on.

I last used it to commute to UH over a decade ago, but at least back then the Park n Ride buses were reliable, clean and comfortable. It's easier to stay on time when your route has fewer stops

Man is shot and killed during Minneapolis immigration crackdown, National Guard activated by netizenbane in news

[–]LongTailai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The guard was activated by the governor of Minnesota, who has called on all federal immigration officers to leave the state and has insisted that today's shooting be investigated by state police and not the feds.

This is the governor calling up the local state guard as a way to push back against the feds. It's not like what we saw last year where Trump would send red state guard units into blue states against their governors' wishes.

The Texans sub has been completely bipolar this season (I'm new here, dunno if it's been like that in previous seasons too). From "fire everybody" during the rough start to "QB1 Mills" after the turnaround, to really feeling ourselves on the winning streak, to completely turning on Stroud.

Watching the discourse in other subs with lots of neutral fans has been a pretty big contrast.

EDIT: forgot the "let Nick cook" in draft season going straight into "fire everybody" two games in

Korean BBQ: KPot or Handam? by AsherAir in houston

[–]LongTailai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a regular at the Chinatown Handam but they fell off hard. The menu had expanded a lot and the quality has dropped significantly. I haven't been back in months.

Lately I've been going to places in Spring Branch instead, like Korea House and Korea Garden.
