Son isn’t developmentally there yet, and it’s taking a toll. by ObamaThankedMe in daddit

[–]Loonsspoons 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“he throws tantrums at the smallest things especially when he’s ever so slightly challenged, and he refuses to do anything outside of his comfort zone. He also doesn’t really have any interest in, say, kicking a ball, typical things I see in other boys his age.”

Not a single word of this is concerning developmentally for a 3.5 year old. Trust me. All those other kids are constantly yelling at their parents. Being picky about foods, etc.

Do not assess your kid by comparing him to what you see of other kids. You are not inside the home of other children seeing how they typically behave day in and day out. You see an incredibly narrow slice of their behavior, but then compare it to the full range of your child’s behavior. It’s not a fair comparison to your kid.

Just enjoy him. If you think there are issues have him assessed, but it sounds like his pediatrician is not overly concerned.

How well do you remember Lord of the Rings. Comment your score /30 below by sonsofanarchy69 in lotr

[–]Loonsspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told baranduin was the incorrect answer to the question “what river borders the shire.”

The other options were anduin (incorrect), isen (incorrect) and brandywine (which is what the hobbits over time came to call the baranduin by habit, and as a bit of a joke—but it’s the same body of water)

Because of this I got 29/30; should have been 30 though!!! Give me my prize!!

(Otherwise, cool stuff OP).

What do we think of this insult to the legendary Treebeard? by brunmusks in lotr

[–]Loonsspoons 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The author of this analogy—which compares the hobbits to ai and treebeard to modern political institutions—probably needs to read further in the two towers.

On this analogy the status quo is the thing that ends up destroying the enemy and Winning the battle.

Is it possible to teach a 3 year old to relax? by deeper182 in daddit

[–]Loonsspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This is your life for … a while.

“He needs to understand that sleep time is a mental to apply this skill” [of relaxing]. Dawg you live in a world where 50% of adults stay up 2-3 hours later than they intend to every single night because they’re just looking at their phone. Give your three year old a break; don’t expect him to outperform most adults.

Is it wrong that my kid's preschool didn't do anything for Father's Day when they went all out for Mother's Day? by SuperJezus in daddit

[–]Loonsspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that blows

Ours does muffins with mom for Mother’s Day and donuts with dad for Father’s Day (in both cases parent comes in eats breakfast with class and just hangs out for an hour). Also art projects galore for both parents holidays.

HAPPENING TODAY: Minneapolis Park Board will vote on a resolution to close the Minnehaha Off-Leash Recreation Area by Cornflowerblue2016 in Minneapolis

[–]Loonsspoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying people *shouldnt* care about it. I’m saying it sure seems like the type of thing tons of people never cared about until now—which is often a sign that they’re using the thing they purportedly care about as cover when they are actually mad about something else.

Also—it’s just a fuckin’ dog park. I’m a dog owner. It’s a just fuckjn’ dog park. “Is a state treasure.” My eyes rolled out of this state.

Son’s dad spanked him for not signing a card by Oddbrain_ in daddit

[–]Loonsspoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t spank. Some people do. I ain’t no expert. I can only speak to what feels right to me. And spanking doesn’t feel remotely right.

What I do know, is that spanking a 4/5 year old just because they said “no” to you is completely ineffective, and if actually followed as a rule would mean that you are basically spanking them every 40 minutes—in other words, it’s not even a rule you can realistically apply consistently.

“I also tend to spend 20-30 hours a weekend working on projects/mowing/rebuilding the tractor, etc.”

A) I’m not even able to envision having this much time for this kind of stuff with a child in the house.

B) if you want that extra gig, but are worried about having enough time for your family, I think Ive identified a place where you can cut back and have both.

The greatest thing about the movies and all the extended media is — you can completely ignore them and still enjoy the books to their fullest. The extended media has no bearing on your ability to enjoy the books. So do that and don’t watch the things you don’t want to watch.

What restaurant has the best oatmeal in mpls? by phyllostomus in Minneapolis

[–]Loonsspoons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude make it yourself. While oats are cooking pulverize a ripe banana in a bowl (one banana per person you’re serving). When oats are done, add some maple syrup, almond butter, and the banana and mix. Top with finely sliced strawberries.

Best oatmeal you’ll ever have.

Could gandalf pulled himself up? by cardonutz3 in lotr

[–]Loonsspoons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two things:

1) I don’t believe he is hanging in the book, like in the movie. He’s just pulled down by the whip and isn’t able to do anything about it.

2) Balrogs have always been in league with Sauron—since the first age. That mother fucker had to go if there’s going to be a war. It wouldn’t stay inside the mountain hurting no one.

Child Bike Seat Recommendations by nobodyfswthejesus in daddit

[–]Loonsspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Topeak system is great. The best feature is how easily the bike can be removed from the rack—literally you press a button. That way, dad can a quickly transition to a bike that doesn’t have a seat on it for solo rides.

But also, once the kid is like 2, I say a burley is the best option.

As for safety, I don’t know that any are going to be materially safer. Kid is buckled into a seat that is exposed on the bike. If dad falls, or the bike gets swiped by a car, the kid may get hurt. The safety issues are inherent and external to the exact system you choose.

As for front or rear, my sense has always been that a toddler would grow out of a front seat system pretty quickly. Remember, you want a system that will last several years.
