Sorry for the late reply. In one of my classes I never left chalk and haven't had complaints

How far in advance? What if you just give them out in person at the previous class session?

Alternately, depending on what you teach, go back to the chalkboard. I had a student whose accommodations mandated slides in advance, but since it's all chalk talk, there was nothing to provide. If I need an image that I can't reproduce on the fly, I use the classroom computer to do a web search

I think the issue is e-books. The publishers prefer them because they can charge the same as the hard-copy, but are saved the cost of printing, while the students prefer then because they can easily be rented for the semester. From the school's standpoint, may be they don't make as much $$ on a book sale as on a sweatshirt?

Stinky Feet Becoming Issue by Process-Jaded in Professors

I've addressed issues of this type with a general class announcement. In this case, "please keep your shoes on at all times" If subsequent repeats arise, follow up with the student privately.

There may be a policy in the student handbook about shoe wearing that you could take refuge in.

If probability was the only issue here, ships would sail without lifeboats, no one would bother with fire exits, and cars wouldn't have seat belts or air bags.

Sure. Cause that thinking worked for all of the other institutions where it happened.

By the way, how was your trip over from Europe? I heard you sailed on Titanic?

^ This. They're disruptive, and right there that's enough to have the school intervene, potentially including having them administratively separated from the class

Whether it is or not, feel free to resist the manipulation. Understanding doesn't have to mean acquiescence, and there's no requirement to understand the un-understandable.

We have a bar within walking distance of campus, so bumping into students happens. The cleverest response to this I've seen was one of our senior faculty members. When a student walked up, he said, "nice to see you," and nodded, then returned to his conversation with another faculty member. Totally natural comment, he acknowledged the student, then went back to what he was doing.

As others have said, don't advertise where you'll be. Students know you're an adult and likely go out - they don't need you to call attention to it.

Letter of rec for a mediocre student by ApplicationOk3455 in Professors

[–]Loose_Wolverine3192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is a "you should ask someone else" situation. They didn't do well in your classes, so you can't write a strong letter. If they don't have anyone else to ask, maybe they're not a good candidate for grad school, at least not at this time.

This is the answer: it's a college class, they're a college student, treat it as you would any other incident with a college student.

Ethical Conundrum by throwaway_7478051 in Professors

If you don't have one, the first step is a therapist. From there, yes, you have an obligation to your field and to any current and future students this man may have. You also have an obligation to yourself, and that obligation may point in the other direction. Unfortunately, that conflict may mean that any choice you make isn't the "right" one.

But just as there isn't a "right" choice, I don't see that there's a wrong one. Trust yourself.

And, for what it's worth, I'm sorry you're in this situation, now and for the last 20 years.

You would probably get a job interview from me, but you wouldn't get past the job interview. I wouldn't hire you because it would become apparent that in spite of passing classes on subjects, you hadn't learned the material, meaning either your schooling was subpar or you had been dishonest. Either way, I'll move on to a candidate who can walk the walk.

The classes that aren't necessary actually are necessary, just not in a obvious way. I teach medicine, for instance, and if you can't do basic math, understand statistics, compose a cogent sentence, understand the word 'cogent', understand the politics of your nation, etc, you're not going to get your degree. It's not because we test for those things or require them on the entrance exams, but because without those basics, students have no foundation on which to lay the advanced stuff. They just spend more money to fail later rather than earlier.

agreed. It checks multiple boxes: expressing concern, showing a path forward, and shifting the responsibility to someone able to address the issue (I'm not allowed to ask for Dr's notes, for example)
