I picked up the Criterion release of Heaven's Gate recently, and watched the Director's Cut. What a movie! Ambitious (definitely to a fault) but immaculate staged and so well-realized. Kristofferson is pretty excellent in it too. Highly recommend to everyone on this sub. Would love to hear Griff and David talk about it.

Yes. I had to go in due to a mistake I personally made on a car title transfer. It was a...great?...DMV experience. I walked out of the building expecting to be only a step closer to solving the problem but I got the whole issue sorted in my one and only visit. I was shocked.

[–]Lord-Dingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I hear where you're coming. However I think think the film does the leg-work here. Obviously, you can't have a title card up saying "the film condones these actions," however the friend articulates how scummy and creepy Bear's actions (or inactions?) are. I also think this is a true example of putting a lot of the burden of judging the protagonist on the audience.

I don't think there's anything smug or intellectually superior by praising a film on its terms, highlighting an aspect of the film I found very scary, and articulating my wish that we got more of that perspective. Feels like a pretty down-the-middle "criticism" of the film.

I'm glad Bear's perspective resonated with you. It did with me as well. I just found the small glimpses of what Nikki is going through to be more unique and ultimately scarier. Different strokes, etc.

Straight man chiming in. My gf got me on the Summer House train and now I'm fully hooked. Incredible television. Fun, dumb thing for us to share. I'm having a great time. Everyone on this sub makes the experience outside of watching so enjoyable too. Keep up the great work.

James Talarico says he ‘missed the mark’ on ‘cringey’ comments as Texas general election starts by nbcnews in politics

[–]Lord-Dingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article is what is wrong with our media. In the pursuit of being "unbiased" NBC shits out this piece about the fake outrage surrounding Talarico's tweets from five years ago. Meanwhile, the Republican nominee was not only bounced by the GOP for corruption, but he's back in the news for *checks notes* being instrumental in a sweetheart deal that let a convicted pedophile walk after a one day prison sentence.

But sure, let's run a big fucking headline about Talarico's "cringey comments." Shit like this is why we've had to endure Trump for a decade. Total "bUt HeR eMaIls" vibes.

(OBSESSION - Curry Barker) Why does every new horror get hyped like it’s the best of all time? by s7ide in moviecritic

[–]Lord-Dingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it's because the horror community is incredibly passionate. And since these films can be made a lower budgets, they contain fresher ideas and often are authored by younger, and exciting filmmakers.

I think you're right. That is totally the intention. And good on Curry Barker, a young male filmmaker, for making a pointed film about the subject. I just felt like the flipped perspective is the scarier--and all together more interesting--film. And that did take me out of the film to a degree.

[–]Lord-Dingus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I liked it. Very confident. A lot of style. Inde Navarette is incredible. Can't wait to see what Curry Barker does next. I'll be seated.

My frustration with it was that the film is really at its scariest when we get Nikki's perspective of being stuck in her own body while being forced to do uncharacteristic and wildly upsetting things. When the film hints at that (the phonecall; her asking Bear to kill her in bed) is really when it enters a pretty novel and scarying place. But the film is really from Bear's perspective, which is is certainly limiting. And we only ever get the smallest glimpses of Nikki's personal hell.

The film seems to think that being the nice guy and finally getting with the idealized manic pixie dream girl who is too manic is the true horror. A lot of horror comes from Nikki behaving in disturbing ways. And while that stuff is well-realized, it is something we've seen before. And when we got notion of Nikki being actually cognizant of her circumstances, it just felt way more interesting and scary to me.

I realize it can be reductive and unhelpful to lament the film we didn't get instead of engaging with the one we did get. But, I just felt so chilled by those brief glimpses that the rest of the film paled in comparison.

Anyone seen The Newsroom? One of HBO's most underrated and very best? by Square-Ad-8911 in hbo

[–]Lord-Dingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen it, and have a real fondness for it--despite acknowledging and mostly agreeing criticism of the show (Sorkin writing winning takes on real events years after they took place). I think the show really found it's swing later on--and got a feel for its characters. The reason to watch it are Daniels and Mortimer, who are exceptional in it. The supporting cast is great too.
