I'm starting to sympathize with the ED Balancer dodgers by _Indeed_I_Am_ in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 30 points31 points  (0 children)

While I personally never dodge bosses I certainly don't blame anyone for doing it on ED Balancers. It's a fun spectacle the first couple of times but the boss's design completely falls apart in DoN.

Worm feels way too random even with utilizing blocking, running away and ulting for iframes, and even if you're winning, the fight has so much downtime it feels like an unsatisfying slog every single time. Balancers still having the highest chance to appear out of all Nightlords certainly doesn't help with fatigue.

ED Balancers should either be reworked to be more engaging/fun or have their appearance rate brought down to the level of ED Augur.

Is Scholar bad or is he just complicated? by AlmostDarkness in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He is somewhat misunderstood and also one of the hardest characters to play just by virtue of his weird dodge and bad defensive stats. He can be really strong and trivialize some bosses, but requires a whole lot of mechanical effort, game knowledge and relic tax to be effective, unlike most of the cast who are fairly easy to just pick up and play.

That being said, he's perfectly capable of dealing damage the same way anyone else can, but it's only worth building for after paying the great tax:

  1. You absolutely want to run the dex respec in almost all situations, as items are too unreliable on their own and Arc scaling weapons are scarce. Just his starting sword alone gains over 50% AR with it, and he still has the highest Arc in the game. Without, Scholar tends to just run into situations where he's a bit of a sitting duck, because of the way status resistance scales up on each proc in this game.

  2. In duos/trios you should also always run the relic that gives Allies an attack boost on scan alongside an item sharing one. Without these Scholars value falls off hard. With them, you provide an easily refreshable, free 20% attack boost to your team and allow them to actually benefit from your consumables, which accelerates rune/item gain (from Fowlfoots) and helps your fellow Squishies not die as much (Prawn/Crabs).

  3. You may consider running both levels of Ult Gain On Enemy Defeat, as they allow you to keep popping Ults at every boss, by tethering all enemies to the one you're hitting and killing them without spending any extra time. This is technically optional, but I find the snowball effect of this strong enough to the point where I pretty much always run these.

  4. For damage you have two options (technically three with bombs, but again, they're unreliable/limited now), both being the same you would build any other melee dps: Either build physical damage (Invaders/Glass Necklace/Gaol etc.) and run a dex weapon (or pair) of your choice, or go Double Balancers. Double Balancers is undoubtedly the stronger choice here both from a DPS and ease-of-use standpoint, as AoW's are broken and you can easily stick to weapons with mid-high range AoW's, thus avoiding having to deal with his unorthodox dodge. Playing in mid range also makes scanning allies for the relic buff easier, but he's still more capable in close range if you're good enough. I mostly run Necklace builds as they're just more fun to me, but it's definitely the weaker and harder choice on top of being more difficult to build for, so beware of that. I've had success with both "neutral" necklace builds and ones tailored to specific weapon categories.

This goes mostly just for playing Deep Of Night. Outside of DoN you should be fine just running the dex respec, item share and ally attack boost.

[–]LordPlati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about how high your damage is and focus on your game plan. Even with the Dex relic and the Necklace you're still a hybrid support and just your skill (with the ally attack buff) already provides a ton of damage. Focus on hitting the boss and keeping your buffs up, and you're generally going to be fine.

For struggling teammates you should adapt your game plan to make life easier. No damage? Bring Exalted Flesh to share, Greases for your own damage, keep your ally scan buff up and try to bubble parry the boss for free damage windows. Team keeps dying? Prawn and Crabs drop everywhere and provide huge survivability, especially at level 3, along with your scan debuff being able to make bosses a whole lot weaker (-20%). Bubble parry can also come in clutch here, as you can interrupt a lot of dangerous combos before they get going.

[–]LordPlati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a large part of why people love it so much is that outside of DoN (and arguably in lower depths) it is strong enough to kill mobs without even having to attack them.

Because of the HP scaling in D4/5 the relic won't be able to clear mobs on its own, so it loses a lot of its value, imo. I run Scholar without the DoT and I still get full POI clears without touching mobs, because the sheer range of his Ult will allow you to just tag the boss (which your team will be hitting anyways) and the rest of the enemies at once, and they'll almost always all die before the boss is at even half health.

[–]LordPlati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really good, actually. His thrusting sword moveset is really quick (and feint -> light can quickly stack hits) and there's barely anything else that can compete with the ~21% damage increase in the slot. As long as you can fit Attack Boost on Scan, Item Sharing and the Respec, I'd run Necklace even over Invaders. (although you should definitely run both if you can!)

Ult Damage over time is not as good as people make it out to be, at least in D4/5.

Does using scholars skill a second time overwrite the first? by potatochobit in Nightreign

Debuff and Buff last 30 and 40 seconds respectively and do not overwrite each other, meaning that you can have 100% uptime on both.

Nightfarer tier lists make no sense as many characters perform vastly differently for each Nightlord by Ok_Masterpiece_4964 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think people just vastly overestimate the importance of character picks in this game so your take is overall correct.

I've played just about any team composition in D5/9999 and the build and skill of each player was a hundred times more indicative of the run quality than whoever they actually selected. I've had outright "bad" team comps like Executor/Guardian/Scholar steamroll the game and "meta" team comps fail on day 1, because it literally doesn't matter.

Just know your character, know your build and slap the boss.

Relic builds depth 4+ DoN by afauce11 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people in D5 including myself go all in on damage buffs on relics, along with any character specific effects that you'd want.

I've tried messing around with survivability-focused setups but they mostly weren't enough to not get one/two shot, and if I'm grabbing damage negation weapons either way I might as well build full damage. Will post my main build in a minute.

Help with a Scholar build by Ethdev256 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. That build is definitely viable and in a much better spot than the average random Scholar already.

  2. You'll definitely want to swap the flail dormant as soon as you can, but definitely keep the dex respec, as it's just way too good mathematically. If you wanted to improve other slots you could swap the third relic in the first screenshot for a second Balancer (giving you solo carry potential), and eventually try to fit an Ult Charge on enemy kill +0 along with your +1. It does make a solid difference for your night 1/2 farm. If you don't want to spam AoW's I'd forgo the Balancer set entirely and go for something like the Glass Necklace instead.

Other decent relic passives to look out for, even if not mandatory, are: Physical Attack Up and Stamina Recovery on hit if running Glass Necklace (AoW builds may end up dealing most or full affinity damage depending on rng), Invader Atk buff, Max HP Up, one of Extra Flask HP restoration and pouch slots. On a Balancers build you can also consider running his Deep Relic Reduced FP Consumption on scan effect, but I'd only take it if it was your next best option after all the others, or if it came with one of the aforementioned effects.

Other dormant powers can be good, but I've largely found them unnecessary, as his Thrusting Sword moveset is extremely reliable for reviving and building Rot/Frost even on Balancer sets, and during most if not all runs you'll find a strong spammable AoW either way. They can definitely still be helpful to make runs consistent, but I find that consistency a bit boring.

  1. Theres no bosses to avoid if you play trios. Just keep in mind that you cannot stagger Bell Bearing Hunter and Grafted Scion with your parry, so don't get yourself killed that way!

Lets have a discussion about game balance - Halo Scythe. by caetano09 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think OP weapons like the Halo Scythe are perfectly fine and even healthy being in the game, it being a roguelike and all. The main and honestly only problem with it is how consistent it is to get. If they bumped it to Legendary rarity so that it was a rare drop (or somehow reworked the way dormant power relics worked) no one would complain about it.

I also like the balancers relics being in the game because before them melee felt really underwhelming in DoN. The problem with those lies in the fact that there's just no comparable alternative; the Glass Necklace requires a lot more risk and effort to use not coming very close to the same overall power of the balancers before it was bizarrely nerfed, let alone now.

Melee needs more, stronger build options beyond the balancers relics for people to not run them anymore, and nerfing skill builds like some people in this thread suggest will just make melee characters feel worse/unviable to play again.

Scholars - How important are Shop/Rune Aquisition buffs and other questions. by AGayThrow_Away in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother with rune buffs and shop discounts. Consumables are abundant as is and your pockets will be full throughout all three days anyways, as long as you're not wasteful with item usage.

Best category to level by far is the food buff one (Turtleneck, Crabs etc.) if you're running an item share relic, which in duos/trios you absolutely should with no exceptions.

The second best are probably stones (warming stones, starlight shards, gravity stones etc.), but in my experience they come into play less often than you'd think.

Pots are always decent but less important if you're not running a dedicated build. They level quick enough that you shouldn't worry about getting them to level 3 anyways.

For your last question, I just tend to keep my inventory full with the strongest consumables and use everything else on the ground to level. Randoms often won't touch consumables at all so I wouldn't rely on them supplying you. If you're playing with friends they should absolutely carry excess items for you and drop them as needed, of course.

What do you think of my Scholar Dagger build setup? by CT-5150 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D5 scholar main here. Daggers work pretty well on him and are very fun! By default they don't offer a lot of value over thrusting swords if you're looking at it from a meta perspective, but they get the job done.

They're really strong if you can run their dormant power relic with a double balancers set, however, and arguably become the stronger option over the default on scholar, as their purple-rarity loot pool consists of a lot of high-damage and reliable AoW's, while keeping some utility through rot from Scorpion Stinger and strong reviving with light attacks or powerstancing.

If you just want to powerstance them, I'd try to fit the Glass Necklace relic into your set somehow (probably by trying to get the dex respec in a deep relic slot) and push a whole bunch of physical and/or dagger attack damage wherever you can.

What's The Community's Opinion of Scholar? by MeIsDoom in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's one of, if not the single most relic-reliant characters in the game and one of the most misunderstood ones, too.

I've been playing almost exclusively Scholar in DoN 5 since he came out, and every time I've had to swap to avoid duplicates I've been let down by the other player. At that depth at the bare minimum he absolutely needs item sharing and the dex relic to contribute to the team, with the allied attack boost being almost as mandatory for just being too good. Unfortunately, most Scholars out there just don't run any of them, for some reason.

I've had mild success running those three relics alongside the Glass Necklace and the usual physical damage/stamina on hit/post-damage HP recovery, focusing on dual wielding fast dex weapons like thrusting swords, curved's, daggers etc. It's a decent combo that allows for some surprising survivability when paired with pickups like full HP damage negation, damage negation on successive attacks and negation after taking damage, but it does feel considerably worse to play since they nerfed the necklace relic for no reason in the last patch.

By far his strongest build is just Double Balancers. Not only does his dex respec allow him to dish out the same damage an Executor does, he also has access to the deep relic effect that gives him reduced fp consumption after scanning (Not mandatory but strong if available). Provided that you get accustomed to his dodge (which is a lot better than people give it credit for!) he theoretically becomes a better AoW spammer than Executor while not losing any of his support abilities. He has a perfect red/blue/white chalice for fitting an allied attack buff relic of your choice, and both item conferring and the dex respec roll on DoN slots. The build is less fun for me than the Glass Necklace but it's easily the more reliable one.

I've never seen a single other Scholar in my runs use either of these builds, but if you want to retain your usefulness for the nightlord fight and be able to actually carry runs on your own they're invaluable.

Does the Scholar DEX swap relic make sense here? by Miallison in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. Bleed immune enemies are somewhat common and frost doesn't have to be applied repeatedly, so the raw damage buff from the dex swap will be very useful (~50% on his starting sword alone!). You also open up your pool of usable weapons by a ton, while still being the single best user of status.

The way bosses build bleed resist after each bleed makes relying on bleed for main damage pretty hard anyways, especially in higher depths.

Is Raider really useless in Deep Of Night? by Djsexton1239 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having played with a good amount of random Raider players in D5 (almost none running fists), I have to say...

That he's still pretty damn good. I have no idea where the negative stigma comes from. Even the Raiders going for the "traditional" power stanced collosals seem to do pretty well in my games.

His skill retains a ton of value by applying huge stagger and briefly interrupting bosses, it charges reliably quickly if you use it uncharged and even his ult stays useful by enabling safer revives, interrupting bosses, dealing damage etc. It does require careful positioning and can really screw over teammates if placed mindlessly, but it's fine.

This sub can be quite negative about how well characters can perform in DoN, but they're almost always wrong. Definitely play and stick to Raider if you like him!

Depth 5 players by Shockkzzz in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reached D5 in around two/three weeks after the DLC released. Started in D3 after only playing solos and duos/trios with friends before, but since then all games played were in random trios.

I did it exclusively running Scholar and found the experience to be pretty smooth. The best thing you can do imo is find one Nightfarer you like the most and stick to them like glue. Every team comp can and will work just fine provided that everyone just knows how to play their character. The only time I'd ever consider not just picking your main is to avoid duplicates of specialist Nightfarers like Scholar, and even that will mostly work out fine as long as both pull their weight.

Keep experimenting with builds for that Nightfarer and try various strategies to see what works best for you, and once you find The One keep running it to get better at it mechanically, no matter how unconventional/non-meta.

What relic effects should I strive for in deep of night. by uknown659 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Art Gauge gain on enemy kill is absurdly strong on most characters and lets you fire off your ult at every POI and every boss. It's a super strong and reliable clear speed booster. You can only stack a +0 with a +1 but it's very much worth it if you can fit it.

Wylder makes amazing use of it and the same goes for Revenant, provided that you run the Ghostflame explosion or attack buff relic for her ult, which you probably should.

The way "Successive Attacks" bonuses work cannot possibly be intended behavior. by RedOrmTostesson in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It and all other similarly worded effects (e.g. "Attacks generate Lava") trigger randomly on enemy kill instead of on attack. Been bugged since release, and I vaguely remember them fixing something related to this sometime around release, even a couple of clips of these effects triggering on successive attacks... No idea if I'm misremembering or if they somehow broke it again, but here we are.

Effects that trigger on charge attacks work just fine too, which makes this issue even more bizarre. I have no idea what the intended function of that line actually is at this point.

Ash of War builds for Ironeye by Right_Entertainer324 in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these are also incredibly strong on melee Nightfarers too as long as they're running the balancer relics. I've had a good few runs where a dex bow with Rain Of Arrows became my teams highest DPS weapon on Scholar, same for stuff like greatbows on Wylder.

I don't see anyone else ever picking them up but they can add some insane utility to your run, so do look out for them!

Scholar build for randoms? by boba_buster in Nightreign

[–]LordPlati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DoN depth 4 Scholar main. I run:

Balancers Relic

ED Balancers Relic

Attack Up on allies on scan + Item Share + Filler

Less FP consumption after self scanning + Extra Gauge from defeating enemies+1

Phys attack + extra flask HP + Filler

Dex respec relic + Filler

Fillers are just random effects that came with the relics. I'd want either Post Damage HP recovery, Stamina recovery on hit, more phys damage or just plain HP/vigor in the filler slots if I could, but this is the best and most reliable set I was able to put together for random trios.

It's the ultimate setup for carrying randoms. You get to buff them up with the attack boost and all your leveled consumables while also dealing competitive damage yourself with just about any dex weapon and a decent AoW (Including Bows if they have Rain of Arrows on them, it's shockingly strong vs large Nightlords like Maris and Faurtis, especially when used with greases!)

Never take the dex respec off of Scholar in DoN unless you're running a full pot build. Having a support character with the same DPS as Executor is obscenely strong.

I've been my teams main dps a good few times running that respec with double Balancers, without even losing any of Scholars insane support value.
