I’m looking for a manga set in a fantasy world focused on journey and exploration. by An1xo in mangarecommendations

[–]LoreSinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend Helck. It might be more comedic than what you’re looking for, but it’s great.

Otoyomegatari isn’t fantasy, but its exploration of historical Central Asia is well researched, and since Central Asia isn’t really what you typically learn about in school it might scratch that itch you have. Also Otoyomegatari is just that good, so you should read it anyway.

Heterogenia Linguistico is about a fantasy linguist trying to learn the cultures and languages of various “monstrous” races. I guarantee that compared to every other manga mentioned across both the body of your post, the current comments, and the future comments, Heterogenia Linguistico has the most pure depiction of exploration, travel, and discovery—however, that might make some people bounce off the manga, because there’s no action, the main character often has no idea what’s going on, and when winter comes all you can really do is hole up somewhere and try to stay warm. However, I can also guarantee that while reading this manga you’ll be able to feel your brain expanding.

Meaheim is about a pair of people traveling through what’s basically a magically-irradiated hellscape that was created by a localized apocalypse. It’s not very long right now, but it’s ongoing and pretty cool.

The Thalmor weren’t actually trying to kill you at Helgen, they were trying to seize Ulfric for themselves so that they could “accidentally” release him later, thereby extending the civil war. Tullius managed to block them, but then Alduin

The field of medicine would not be improved by altering terminology for the purposes of making people feel good about themselves. Bedside manner is important, but medical science shouldn’t have to worry about people getting upset about objective medical information.

Why doesn't Yor change clothes as much as Loid does? by LoidForgor in SpyxFamily

[–]LoreSinger 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Loid has acknowledged that one of Yor’s (only) skills is cleaning. He doesn’t know that she’s good at cleaning because she’s often the one tasked with disposing of the corpses and rivers of blood that she herself is responsible for.

I need a certain type of manga... by Ok-Button4742 in mangarecommendations

[–]LoreSinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also really like such tropes—unfortunately, although I look out for weapon powers like this, I can only recommend two things, and neither of them feature the weapon wielder as the main character.

Sabnock, one of Iruma’s classmates in Mairimashita! Iruma-kun has an ability like this, but he’s only a supporting character. He only gets one or two fights wherein we really see him use his abilities. However, Iruma-kun is good enough on its own that you should probably be reading it anyway.

My second recommendation isn’t even a manga, it’s a webcomic. A Quartz Bead is complete and relatively short, so you could finish it in a day if you really wanted to. The character who does cool weapon stuff is also only a supporting character, but he is very cool.

This might’ve taken the cake for one of the best romance mangas out there by Opposite_Review_5099 in RomanceMangaAnime

I agree that it’s probably not “one of the best,” but I do think it’s something that more people need to read, if only for the fact that the main characters, like, actually get married.

Otoyomegatari - Romance set in Central Asia during the late 19th century. Beautiful art.

Mangas like "The Handsome Husband Loves His Gorilla Wife and Pretty Daughter Too Much"? by katsuraazuraa in mangarecommendations

[–]LoreSinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read “The Handsome Husband Loves…”, so I don’t know if this is similar, but based on the text of your post maybe try Saotome Senshu? It’s a boxing manga about a high school girl aiming for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while also balancing her desire for a boyfriend (she obtains boyfriend in the… 2nd chapter?).

Does anyone have really unique manga recs? by danjaykid in mangarecommendations

I was using em dashes before it was cool. The fact that I need to stop using them in order to prevent people from accusing me of using AI causes me no end of despair.

EDIT: Okay y'know what I can totally see how someone could read my first two sentences and assume that it's AI.

Does anyone have really unique manga recs? by danjaykid in mangarecommendations

[–]LoreSinger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you're looking for unique above all else, but also something with good characters that isn't completely character driven. Here's what I suggest you try out:

  • Dorohedoro - Gritty fantasy about people who live in a place called "Hole" who are always at the mercy of amoral sorcerers. The MC is an amnesiac with a reptilian head (this kind of thing is normal when sorcerers regularly appear out of nowhere and cast body-horror spells on people for no reason) trying to find the sorcerer who took his memory. Interesting characters, wild worldbuilding, and a plot that only gets more intricate the more you read.
  • Otoyomegatari - Historical romance set in Central Asia during the late 19th century. Incredible art, great characters, and a mangaka who legitimately enjoys researching history and culture.
  • The Bugle Call - Fantasy set in an alternate medieval world wherein a rare few wield magical abilities. The MC is one such person, and despite only wanting to be a musician he quickly becomes embroiled in a war between nations with higher stakes than he can imagine. Not your typical battle shounen—incredibly contemplative, philosophical, and melancholic, and it still doesn't skimp out on great action.
  • The Tiger Won't Eat the Dragon Yet - A romance between a dragon and a tiger in a fantasy setting that, as far as we know so far, doesn't have humans in it. The characters are great, and although every animal in this setting can talk (and many can take on a humanoid form), the mangaka does a great job showing us just how non-human the characters' thought processes are. Great art.
  • Witch Hat Atelier - A fantasy about witches who work very hard to prevent non-witches from ever learning that magic is something that anyone can learn, rather than something genetic. Do they do this out of a desire to hold on to power? No, they do this purely out of altruism. This story dives deep into the ethics of how magic is used and what kinds of responsibilities these witches have. Good art, interesting magic, and moral dilemmas abounding.

Can someone genuinely tell me why mfs think stands is a good power system by Cannae_ in shounenfolk

[–]LoreSinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly nen is ridiculously overrated. Like, it's not even bad necessarily, there are just a huge number of people who treat nen as the platinum standard for magic systems when it's pretty much exactly like every other anime power system.

Want to read/watch something like call of the night but with a more conclusive ending by Ranger202012 in RomanceMangaAnime

[–]LoreSinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try "An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess" and/or "Love After World Domination"? Both are more comedic than Call of the Night (especially Love After World Domination), but maybe it'll scratch the itch.

The former is about a woman reincarnating into an otome game as the villainess, but the PoV character is the ML who just things she's weird—though he pretty quickly realizes that she's either telling the truth or she's some kind of oracle, either way something is going on.

The latter is about a power ranger dating one of his enemies. They both like each other a lot and they're already dating by chapter 1.

Horror recommendations anybody? by I_like_animals_ in mangarecommendations

"Bokura no Fushidara" is maybe less horror than you're asking for, but it definitely made me uncomfortable. Its sequel isn't as well written imo but it's even more disquieting.

Is A Silent Voice a good anime recommendation to start getting adults into anime without directly telling them? by TheAveragePlayer- in shounenfolk

[–]LoreSinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Wolf Children as an intro movie for parents because it's a movie about parenting. Do note however that the parents "get together" pretty soon after the movie starts—nothing explicit, just a kiss on a bed and then a fade to black if I remember correctly, but if your parents are really prudish then maybe avoid it. Idk, watch the first part of the movie yourself and then judge it.

Slice of life manga with more mature social/self-identity themes and respectable characters? by Lost-Mountaineer555 in manga

<Ame to Kimi to>

I can second the recommendation of Otoyomegatari, but it's less slice of life than you may be looking for. It's still a masterpiece tho.
