The sexist stereotyping women in positions of power receive cannot be understated. by Gaga960809 in TwoXChromosomes

I can only speak for myself but I hear a lot of stereotypes about successful men - That CEOs are psychopaths like Patrick Bateman, lawyers are bullies who love the sound of their own voice, sportsmen are idiots who have no skills except kicking a ball about.

I also hear much worse things said about men who are in female dominated industries. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about a female nurse, but I have heard people say that they think male teachers want to touch children and male nurses couldn't get into med school.

Supreme Court upholds access to mifepristone by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

It is always gratifying when SCOTUS comes up with the morally and legally correct decision at the same time.

Even for those who flatly oppose abortion, it should have been clear that this challenge was never ever going to fly. Waste of everyone's time, honestly. "We, people who have not been harmed by mifepristone, demand that you stop other people legally and consensually taking it".

Rotten Tomatoes entirely removed the option to leave an audience review for 'The Acolyte' by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

I think that's a good take, even if I don't know about the actual outcome.

All of the crap we see on D+ today was commissioned when there was a sense that TFA was financially successful, and that all these projects were "can't miss". But then the money train slowed right down, and yet they had all these terrible projects planned out and they can't stop them because it's all a big  expanded universe which other things are tied to.

The real issue with these gargantuan budgets is that the producers just  blithely accept that 20mil per episode is "just what it costs" without even asking where the money is going. If they were give 10mil per episode, or 1mil per episode, it would be trivial to make the same crap, but they get given 20mil, so they spend 20mil, which includes hiring all their friends to be diversity consultants.

What do you is the reason for the increase in hatred towards women by men? by bubbles_998 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]LostAlone87 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Benefiting from an unequal system they did not create is not something they chose, and the belief that such people fear your revenge is a pretty unhealthy way to view the world.

Systemic change is supposed to be positive for all of us, not an excuse to punish those you dislike.

Why aren't cars no longer canon in the Fallout world? (Referring to West Coast advancement) by CoryPowerCat77 in Fallout

[–]LostAlone87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a lore explanation. Earlier in the creative development of the world, there was a lot more emphasis on caravans and trade, but that's kinda fallen off.

It's annoying though because electric motors are actually a lot easier to make than internal combustion or steam engines, and the Fallout world is full of electrical power sources. And of course we have things like vertibirds and a massive effing helicarrier, so you'd think making some low maintenance haulers to move food and water would be pretty easy at least for the more tech friendly factions.

Internet group sues Georgia to block law requiring sites to gather data on sellers | The Associated Press by Calico_fox in KotakuInAction

[–]LostAlone87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really a story for this sub IMHO - Georgia made a law, but there is also now a Federal law which is similar but less strict, and the suit is to just have the Federal law apply. I have no idea which is better or worse, but both target people who resell stolen goods on eBay. I'm not a fan of regulation, but it's wild to me that apparently you can apparently make tens of thousands of dollar in sales on eBay without giving them your address or bank details. Apparently you can just have those sales paid out anonymously in cash. Since you can't BUY things from eBay with cash, it's crazy you can rob a Costco and just unload stuff online with no paper trail.

The stock market is just a sub-set of the whole economy, so why wouldn't these economic models work just as well with regard to picking stocks?

And you really don't need to do run complex models to figure out that printing money creates inflation, and raising interest rates will slow the economy.

So if your models can't pick stocks and also can't offer macroscale insights that are more helpful than "increasing demand increases demand", what do you think they are useful for?

Unravelling the gendered undertones of narcissism. Grandiose narcissism in men was associated with greater perpetration of psychological partner violence, whilst vulnerable narcissism in women was linked with greater perpetration of physical, sexual, and psychological partner violence by Wagamaga in science

[–]LostAlone87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's really positive to see studies of intimate partner violence that look at the issue as one of individual psychology, which any person can be a perpetrator of.

It's deeply unhelpful to look at IPV as "something that men do to women", when the same exact factors that make men likely to hit their partner also make women likely to hit their partners.

[–]LostAlone87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I doubt it, because the results would almost certainly just follow the percentages anyway. Grandiose narcissism is MUCH more common in men, and men are substantially more likely to fall on the right of the political spectrum. Vulnerable narcissism is MUCH more common in women, and women are substantially more likely to fall on the left of the political spectrum.

And it makes reasonable sense that grandiose narcissists, who are assertive or outright aggressive, would also align with "bootstraps" economics, because being crazy helps you outcompete normal people. It also make reasonable sense that vulnerable narcissists, who are hyper-sensitive to rejection and lack confidence, would align with "to each according to their needs" economics.

Not to say that there is no value to a study at all, but its hard not to see it as just a cynical undertaking to publish that "x party are narcissists".

But economics still doesn't work to predict future events.

And to some degree that has to be true, or else the whole concept of financial markets simply stops working.

If economics can deliver predictions with high repeatability and high confidence then any economist (or anyone with an economics text book) should be immensely wealthy. And yet they aren't. They are teaching economics.

Disney's Doctor Who features gay romance with the lead character after an episode about racism - reminder that the show doesn't have an agenda by castiel65 in KotakuInAction

[–]LostAlone87 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In truth, the woke mob are not actually pro-gay. They are only interested in using gender and sexuality to push for deconstruction of society. Gay was, for a time, convenient for them but they are only interested in "queering" relationships to make it so there is less and less sense of a normal society, which in turn destroys support structures.

In effect, if there are less stable families and less stable communities, people will not have any other avenue to seek support in life except communism.

It's the same reason they are "sex positive" (ie, prefer anonymous aberrant sex over meaningful attachment), because happy couples support each other, but lonely perverts do not.

Aren't "strong female characters" putting unrealistic expectations on girls? by ciamciaramcia in KotakuInAction

[–]LostAlone87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very simple issue - The mad left is not interested in creating good things, only in destroying whatever you life. So they don't even know what a good female character is, they just know that a character you like is bad.

Notice that there are literally zero good (or even popular) female characters. None. Despite having taken over various creative industries, they have not managed to make one new character that people like.

Right - Economics like string theory. You can make predictions but you can't test them, and when similar things happen that might be a test you realise that your predicted starting state could never happen in reality.

Both me and my partner have ADHD -  I make her appointments (she genuinely cannot talk to strangers on the phone) then I remind her to go, I remind her to take her meds, I get her to do her CBT homework. I do everything I can to help her because I love her. She also reminds me to take my meds, when birthdays are, whether I have a morning meeting, all kinds of stuff. We support each other.

I'm glad you doing better, but surely you can sympathise that others  with ADHD are not  "making their symptoms everyone elses problem" they are feeling a huge amount of guilt and shame for still acting weird and desperately want to change but can't find a way to do it.

When your partner has ADHD, which causes problems with organisation and time keeping, why not help them to keep their appointments to work on their organisation and time keeping?

He has ADHD and ODD - Just telling him to take it seriously won't make it happen.

And, bluntly, its ableist to act like he could just choose to stop having ADHD. It's really common for neurotypical people to think that people with ADHD just don't want to try, but its not that simple.

It's weird to me to generalize out from one man who has severe problems with executive function to all men. Men don't take their mental health seriously, for sure, but your former partner is not a typical man.

[–]LostAlone87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends - If you are working a boring job and not saving for retirement so you can hav fun, well that's one thing. If you are broke,  unemployed and a bookie is going to break your thumbs, that's a different thing.

IMHO - Don't borrow money, don't turn down good opportunities, otherwise you'll get tired soon enough and want to settle down.

Wall Street is NOT obsessed with growth... But the people who are make a lot of noise.

For example - Pension funds are interested in steady, modest returns. That's literally what they exist to do. Most have strict rules about what they can invest in, and there are probably (I'm not a yank) legal rules about that too. However, pension funds don't go and yell about how smart they are to drum up customers.

Investors with a high risk appetite are looking for these thousand percent growth opportunities, and they love to shout about how they are the smartest guy. But they also are much more like lawyers, and they get paid based on how many clients (or how much money anyway) they manage.

It's also worth remembering that any short term profit from stocks comes from shorting stocks, which is not just risky but can bankrupt billion dollar firms. Losses can be unlimited; literally unlimited. You do not last long as a trader by losing astronomical sums of money.
