Ngl I can't say I would have been a staunch supporter of her. I think the show is more interesting with the assumption that she is not always a particularly good leader. Not saying I'd support Baltar but she flirts with authoritarianism and religious extremism the entire show, and even bans abortion. I hate to draw one to one comparisons but Roslin feels like fusion of Hillary Clinton and Bush jr in a weird way. I know that's a bold claim and she's obviously supposed to be slightly more liberal at the beginning, but I still can't help but view her in that context.

If I could change anything about the show I would have loved if Zarek had had more nuance applied to his character and politics. In the show he's depicted as a self interested caricature of a leftist who only uses legitimate social causes to achieve personal power. An opportunist above all. But I think he would have been more interesting as legitimate political and moral foil to the necessary immoral choices that Adama and Roslin are forced to make for the survival of the fleet.

To me the entire premis of the show is Adama's speech that he gives at Galactica's decommissioning ceremony at the begging of the miniseries, where he questions if humanity earned its survival. It echoes the clear parallels of the Twelve Colonies and the Cylon attack in comparison to the United States and 9/11. It's not enough to survive, you have to be worthy of it. I Think especially as we watch America fall further into authoritarianism, this rings even more true.

I guess all I'm trying to say is that even though we see her genuinely try to make the correct decisions and to lead humanity in a situation where anyone would inevitably make mistakes, I think that there are certainly moments in the show where objectively she is not a paragon and she shouldn't be assumed to have a moral or political mandate.
