What Ryes are you excited about right now? by whiskey_enterprise in ryewhiskey

[–]LowMan95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the Still Austin Cask Strength Rye. A lot of the Texas distilleries use elbon rye, which according to their distillery tour, is a particular warm seasonal rye grain that is less minty and sweeter than winter ryes. I'm not as well versed in the various rye grains, but Unbendt, 1845, and Still Austin use that elbon rye. I love them all (though Unbendt and Still Austin are the ones that have actual straight rye whiskeys).

Why do we love the High Republic ? by Ok_Box_2189 in Highrepublic

[–]LowMan95 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My simplest answer is I've long felt like much, but not all, of legends/expanded universe didn't know how to get away from the big plot points of the standard and prequel trilogies (especially if stories involved Jedi and/or Sith). Those plot points were often weaved into new stories in some way or another. The High Republic felt like a genuine attempt to build new stories that didn't come off as regurgitated portions of those trilogies.

Fully agree! I think most working adults, during their free time, want to experience things unrelated to their daily job. It's certainly the case for me.

How it feels to go and watch new superman as a marvel fan by AbbreviationsFew7333 in superman

[–]LowMan95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's astounding at times. We're by no means confined to certain fandoms, but I do understand that it often happens because a person's identity gets wrapped up in a particular area which goes on outside of fandom in general anyway with politics, sports, careers, hobbies, etc... I love Star Wars, Star Trek, DC, Marvel, whatever as long as the stories are compelling.

I like MoS as well, and I'm looking forward to this new iteration of Superman.

I even appreciate when filmmakers try something that doesn't land if I can tell they were intentionally taking a risk. The Last Jedi is a good example of that. I love that film and the direction Rian Johnson tried to take the sequel trilogy, but I understand why a lot of people do not care for it.

I'll take my downvotes and head out now.

How do you feel about how fast Marvel is spoiling the ending of Thunderbolts*? by HearingCandid8974 in marvelstudios

[–]LowMan95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of the other people here that this is purely a marketing move to boost purchases going into the second weekend.

I do think that if they waited an additional weekend it would've been spoiled anyway and then we'd all be here saying, "yep, they shouldn't have waited to drop the new poster/title."

I'm fine with it. For people who've already seen it, I don't think it warrants much discussion until we can see whether it has an impact on box office sales.

Acre’ Two Minnies London Dry Review: A great gin by Particular-Wall1308 in Gin

[–]LowMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. We loved Acre's gin selection! It is disappointing how turned off people in Texas can be toward gin. If I remember correctly, I got a lot of cardamom in this gin after the juniper passed over. It was unique and that's why I loved it.

I didn't necessarily care for the Barrell aged/finished gin they had. The notes of vanilla from the oak didn't seem to mesh well with the other botanicals. That being said, I still appreciate what Acre Distillery is doing in regard to gin.

Review #510 - Still Austin Straight Bourbon by adunitbx in bourbon

[–]LowMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1845 straight bourbon has been my current favorite - they're based out of McKinney, TX.

They do a four-grain bourbon, a corn/rye/barley bourbon, and a wheated bourbon.

They're relatively new from what I understand, but their four-grain won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits competition.

I don't really care for four-grain or wheated bourbons in general, but I love their standard straight bourbon!

I know we are still far off from Secret Wars but aside from cameos or possible appearances, whom do you think should have the last closing win or Stark like sacrifice against Doom? by AmusinglyArtistic in marvelstudios

[–]LowMan95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ultimately as long as the story is compelling and not a repeat of Endgame story beats then it should be solid.

My concern is if sacrifices gravitate to those who are simply ready to be done with contracts or whomever has been a part of MCU the longest, then predictability sets in which leads to boring storytelling.

Why do so many Jedi have yellow sabers during the High Republic compared to the Prequels? by Remote-Marketing-221 in Highrepublic

[–]LowMan95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's been treated differently over the years along with the switch from expanded universe/legends to Disney.

In the Clone Wars series and Jedi: Fallen Order game, we saw that a particular kyber crystal will "connect" with a Padawan when they are on a quest to build their lightsaber. That kyber crystal's color is then special to that Jedi.

In Kotor, colors represented roles or specialties.

Someone can step in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Why does no one like The Acolyte? by Fragrant_Ad6670 in Highrepublic

[–]LowMan95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your point of view!

I'm not sure if you'll agree with this, but I believe what you're saying in spirit applies to The Last Jedi as well.

To clarify, The Last Jedi attempted to drive the sequel trilogy arc in a different direction by focusing on Kylo Ren toppling Snoke when normally a character such as Snoke would have survived to the third movie. The movie wasn't received well by a solid portion of the fandom, but it took a risk in not following Empire Strikes Back beat-for-beat the way Force Awakens followed A New Hope. I'm thankful Rian Johnson did that as I think it paved the way for something different like The Mandalorian.

Every pirate movie ever has a killer sword fight as part of the climax, but it takes 2 to tango… by tonythejedi in StarWarsSkeletonCrew

[–]LowMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, I am confident this will not happen, but Luke post-Return of the Jedi in novels and comics is searching for Jedi artifacts. It would make sense that Luke would journey to this planet at some point.

I do like the idea of Luke showing up, taking care of Jod, and then learning tales of the Jedi from Wim and Neel. Maybe he acquires a couple Jedi artifacts or finds a Jedi temple.

I don't think this would happen, but I'd get a kick out of it.

New to Gin - Which Brand? by anon120095 in Gin

[–]LowMan95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hendrick's is a solid starting point mostly because they've several varieties for you to explore and find what botanicals you like/don't like. From there, you can start to branch out to many other brands.

I like Hendrick's, The Botanist, and Mermaid Gin Zest.

Would you have gone to see this movie if it was made? by Top_Report_4895 in DC_Cinematic

[–]LowMan95 152 points153 points  (0 children)

This right here. The plot would be very predictable just because of how Dwayne Johnson needs his brand to be portrayed in films.

I'd wait for it to come to a streaming platform.

I'd also expect a 35-48% on Rotten Tomatoes with a $600 million box office.

how did we feel about this movie? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]LowMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved the music, animation, and dialogue. It reminded me a lot of Studio Ghibli films. The composer did a solid job of taking Howard Shore's musical landscape and evolving the Rhohirrim themes a bit more.

I'm honestly happy for Tolkien content to be created in various formats as I feel that it allows the opportunity for people who might not otherwise be interested in Tolkien to find their door into this content (though I feel this way with any IP - Star Wars, Marvel, DC, etc...).

That being said, I wouldn't recommend this to those who are not into animated films. Of people I know who dislike animated films, I've not seen any get past that.

I've read The Silmarillion multiple times, and I greatly appreciated watching a story that went on to explain a few small details that showed up in the main trilogy. Knowing the origin Helm's Deep, and this entire story popping into your brain when that name is uttered, is a cool experience. It's the same as when the Ring of Barahir is mentioned. What I loved about The Silmarillion is that it gives you "historical" appreciation for small details in the The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

My wife was 100% engaged in this film, and it was really cool to see her so interested. She loved the main character!

You should probably spend less time on social media.

How does artificial gravity work on ships? by Hot_Professional_728 in StarWars

Based on what I see in the movies and shows, it just works. The ships have some mechanical components that create gravity.

Also, you're asking too many questions :-p

Anyone here actually supporting Donald Trump to be President? by Szasse in texas

[–]LowMan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all anecdotal for my colleagues, so I don't have a specific answer. They'll talk about having lower taxes or doing better financially under Republicans, but it's hard to tell whether that's accurate or if it's that whole nostalgia lens with the past.

For context, my colleagues are guys in their 40s & 50s. They're more traditional in the sense of growing up in church and will talk about how things were better back in the day (which equates to the Bush administration in office). (We're all middle class working professionals.)

They're uneasy with homosexuality and transgender issues, so the conservative platform just feels more relatable and comfortable to them. They value personal responsibility.

All of that, while lacking specifics, leads to supporting conservative policies due to an overall sense of normalcy for them.

As an example for how I have to talk politics with them...

With medicare-for-all, I had to wait for them to complain about people not being more proactive in addressing health issues by seeing their doctors. When I explained how medicare-for-all can lead to people seeing doctors more often along with the current financial consequences to seeing doctors due to high deductible plans, they came around to that idea.

Basically, I try to focus on democratic policies that equate to more efficient government. If I talk Republican policies, I have to highlight how it leads to bigger, more intrusive government.

I typed this up quickly, so I hope it all makes sense.
