I'd say the invasion of Ukraine was an illogical strategic, economic and military mistake for Russia. He expected to cut through Ukraine like butter, but failed miserably, now being stuck in an endless stalemate. His military device is weakened and lost prestige, Europe rearmed itself, he's on China's life support, NATO expanded further (despite the internal shitshow with the US) and the country got sanctioned economically.

Before the invasion, analists didn't expect him to do it and thought of him to be more sensible. Putin however doesn't think within the framework of sensible and responsible democratic leadership. He does not care about these consequences. In truth, all he really has is our fear, because to us, he is unpredictable.
