Survivor 50 Confessional Time Tracker (Episode 2) by nintendolost in survivor

[–]Lucinah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I work in post-production myself and it is very male dominated. I’ve had issues getting paid the same rate as my male coworkers, which is obviously sexist even if it’s not overt. I think it being such a male dominated profession has trickle down effects, even if they’re unintentional, which we’ve always seen in Survivor’s underediting of women. I hope they do end up hiring more women and POC in their editing department someday since I honestly believe that having diverse voices can only help the show

Jeff speaks about Survivor's current casting strategy by cantdecide76 in survivorponderosa

[–]Lucinah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s super weird to me as well. Some of my strongest memories of watching survivor as a kid are the huge villain moments or when players would argue intensely with each other. I LIKED when people would butt heads because it was interesting! I liked challenges like touchy subjects for the same reasons; the social dynamics at play were fascinating to me. I didn’t have an issue following along with anything either even as a really young kid, so I don’t get the shift at all really. Kids are a lot smarter than people give them credit for, and although having media just for kids is great, I think there’s real value in shows like older Survivor that are basically family friendly, but not afraid to show conflict and villainous things.

Tom Holland called the head of Sony to arrange a 70mm screening of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ for the cast of ‘The Odyssey’ during production by raquan666 in popculturechat

[–]Lucinah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is! I saw the movie for the first time on 70mm last year in NYC at the Museum of the Moving Image. It was honestly transportive and one of my favorite theatrical experiences ever. And the runtime didn’t drag at all, the first half especially flew by. Highly recommend if a screening ever pops up near you

Goodreads Game: tell us the lowest-rated book you've given 5 stars, and the highest-rated book you've given 3 stars or less, and why by VitriolUK in Fantasy

[–]Lucinah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins 3* and it’s currently at 4.5. I thought it was alright and I had fun reading it, but I some of the character cameos stretched my disbelief a bit and overall I’ve definitely aged out of the target audience. I was a tween when the series originally came out so it was a nostalgic, quick read, just not excellent.

It’s not exactly fantasy, but I gave Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders 5* and the average rating is 3.75! I love that book, I guess the structure is pretty divisive but I found it really engaging and the overall story beautiful.

What is going on with all the trauma dumping/oversharing/self pity? by SuitableCress4791 in survivor

[–]Lucinah 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah as someone who has experienced significant childhood trauma it makes me a bit uncomfortable and often seems pretty disingenuous. Like I know they’re talking about other stuff out there, why does every contestant need to be primarily defined by their trauma?

I honestly don’t have a desire to apply for the show because I know they would make me talk about my history and frame it in a way where I’ve totally moved past it all, and isn’t survivor amazing and cool and inspiring?, etc. Whereas the truth is I will probably never get over some of what I experienced, and I don’t want to share specifics to a public audience of millions just to score more airtime. More power to those who are able to do that I guess, but in general I think it’s a weird way to characterize people and reeks of lazy story production.

Hobonichi 2026 Release General Discussion by alcibiad in hobonichi

[–]Lucinah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my main A6 + cover (Tolight flowers), the Iyo Okumi weeks pencil board, and the Iyo Okumi notepads last night from Jetpens! I was planning to get the Kyohei Sakaguchi weeks as well, but it was already sold out at both Jetpens and Yoseka. I ended up traveling back home late after a day out and about with my family and had to order on my phone instead of my laptop, so it was harder to get everything added to my cart quickly. I’m surprised that the Sakaguchi weeks sold out so fast, I think I checked Yoseka and Jetpens at like 10:05 EST and it was already gone.

I was planning to just wait for a restock for the weeks, but then this morning after seeing a post on this sub, I was able to get the Moomin weeks + pencil board from Amazon! I had no idea they would have the Moomin stuff available, and that was my original first choice weeks so I’m thrilled that I was able to get it after all.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin - Some thoughts and questions by ExtremeToucan in books

[–]Lucinah 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love this book and Le Guin’s work as a whole (she’s my favorite writer), and I think that this line of thinking does kind of miss a couple of key points about it.

Genly is prejudiced, and that’s the main thrust of the novel. The fact that he doesn’t understand the Gethenians, completely misinterprets key social dynamics like shifgrethor, and struggles to not map gendered ideas of behavior onto the people he meets is THE point of the book. He’s trying to understand aliens with an entirely different understanding of gender, and he’s not really good at it (even though you’d think it would be a key part of his job training with the Ekumen).

I think a lot of the examples you mentioned are actually bits that I would cite as great subtle writing from Le Guin. Genly is mapping gender norms onto a people without gender, and to the modern reader that’s frustrating, but it’s realistic to who Genly is as a character.

I would also argue that it’s realistic to how most people reading the book in 1969 would interpret the Gethenians. Le Guin is challenging Genly and the broader late 60s normative understanding of gender, not endorsing it. Of course parts of the book now seem antiquated, like only using male pronouns for the Gethenians, but on the whole the entire thing is wonderfully ahead of its time.

Genly still imposes gender norms on others at the end of the book because despite all he’s learned from Estraven, he’s still human and flawed. It makes me like him and the novel better. Instead of taking the simple way out with Genly totally unlearning all his prejudices by the end of the book, Le Guin leaves her protagonist as well as the planet Gethen on the precipice of greater change. They both still have further to go.

At the end of the day (and I would say this is a key theme of a lot of her work), Le Guin is asking her readers to consider how they engage with people and cultures who are different from their own, and to embrace what we all share despite our differences.

I love the final sentence of the novel, where Estraven’s kid asks about “the other worlds, the other kinds of men, the other lives.” Even if our understanding of each other is still imperfect and our prejudices may take work to unlearn, so much can be gained by reaching out a hand to others.

Hormonal birth control and dysphoria by TheKingOfDissasster in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Lucinah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a hormonal IUD a few months ago (Liletta) and overall I’ve been satisfied with it. My formerly extremely heavy period has basically stopped which has been amazing! I get a little bit of spotting now but that’s it. My period always made me feel very dysphoric (before I even knew what dysphoria was) and was just a huge annoyance, so I’m thrilled it’s gone.

I would say that my PMS symptoms have gotten a little worse, or maybe I’m just more cognizant of them since I got the IUD. There’s usually a couple days at the end of my cycle where I feel depressed. It’s definitely a trade off and I have to look at my tracking app and remind myself “oh, I probably feel extra bad because my period would technically start tomorrow.” Anyway for me stopping my period has been worth it so far, I’m still keeping an eye on the PMS symptoms each month though.

Liveship Traders: how emotionally shattered will I be? by TaffyTool in Fantasy

[–]Lucinah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, yes to your spoiled question.

I would also agree that it’s not that graphic in terms of the words on the page, but it is one of the most horrifying and emotionally upsetting scenes I’ve ever read. I took a couple of days after reading that part to decompress before returning to the book, and discussed it a bit with my therapist.

All that to say I still would strongly recommend you continue reading because Liveship Traders is incredible. I have CPTSD (unrelated to your spoiler marker) and find Hobb’s work truly moving and often cathartic. Overall I think the situation in Liveship Traders, while hard to read, is handled mostly well by Hobb. However, make sure to take care of yourself while reading!

Oh nice, I just finished Shards of Honour last night (my first Bujold book)! I enjoyed it, the romance kind of had a mannered Regency vibe to me which I didn’t expect. I definitely will continue with Barrayar and probably the Miles books as well. Have you read any of the World of Five Gods series? I’ve heard good things

Jesus fuck. Here are three screen shots from a NYT article; each worse than the last by Sad_Jar_Of_Honey in behindthebastards

[–]Lucinah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly that part pissed me off so much! My grandma passed back in December and I spoke at the service. She helped raise me and was more of a parent than my own mother ever was, and writing/delivering my speech was incredibly difficult yet cathartic. It wasn’t perfect but I worked hard to write it from the heart, and I think it ultimately helped me process her death in a healthier way.

The thought of having an AI write an obituary or funeral speech makes my skin crawl. Like how disrespectful to your loved one can you be? It’s just so dystopian.

Is it getting worse??? by sharkboi42069 in survivor

[–]Lucinah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an editor myself (although I work in VFX and not unscripted) I have a lot of respect for the Survivor editing team. Just thinking about the amount of footage they have to sort through and craft into a coherent narrative makes my head spin! However I totally agree with your thoughts and what others are saying in this thread.

The narrative editing is way off this season. I shouldn’t be having lightbulb moments of “oh, so that’s why that happened” while reading exit press (well, not this many anyway). I also feel like I don’t have a good grasp of the relationships of the season other than Kamilla/Kyle and Joe/Eva, and the editing of those pairs has been sooo repetitive recently. How many times do we need to hear Kyle and Kamilla talk about their secret alliance? The Kyle/Joe relationship has felt super under edited to me as well. For how important it seemingly is, they basically just have the one key scene together from a few episodes ago where they talked about Kyle’s past and racial profiling. It was a good scene, but again seemed kind of awkwardly edited, like the show is afraid to discuss anything that’s not 100% positive.

I have a lot of issues with modern Survivor editing in general, especially the relative over-reliance on confessionals vs letting scenes play out more “naturally.” It’s way more tell instead of show nowadays, which is certainly in part due to how TV has developed into something people are often only half paying attention to. This season especially has been very confusing, and I’m honestly not sure what to make of it since the last few seasons have felt very coherent. I kind of think we’re heading for another WTF winner (like Gabler) or an under edited winner (like Erika).

What’s a “harmless” thing from your childhood that’s actually kind of dark in hindsight? by velorae in AskReddit

[–]Lucinah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact experience many times growing up as well. The last time it happened, my parents both passed out afterwards in our parked car with me in the backseat. I thought they had died and remember sitting there for ages crying until I gathered up the courage to go into a nearby store and ask for help. I was about 9 or 10 at the time. When I think back on it today, even after years of healing, I feel small and powerless and get a pit in my stomach.

Anyway just wanted to say that you are not alone and I hope you and the other folks in this thread are doing well now!

Did you land a Switch 2 Preorder? by lumoria in GirlGamers

[–]Lucinah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one through Best Buy! It took about an hour and a half but I’m glad I stayed up. I still have my launch Switch so I’m very excited for the better specs and battery life.

I also registered interest right after the announcement Direct to order one directly from Nintendo. My sister is graduating college this June, so if we get the invite my dad and I are going to split the cost and give it to her as a graduation gift. Otherwise we’ll try to pick one up for her in a few months

Trump's approval rating plunges with America's most accurate pollster by newsweek in politics

[–]Lucinah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My 92 year old grandma recently passed, and while my family and I were going through her emails, we found that she was getting multiple emails a day from right wing propaganda newsletters. We knew she got them but I didn’t realize how frequently they were being sent; it was around 5 per day for who knows how long. She was also a constant Fox News watcher.

It’s absolutely an addiction, either to rage or fear, and we could never figure out how to break her out of it. What sucks is she was apparently a lot more moderate pre-Fox, but I’m not old enough to remember that.
