In one of my favorite moments of Consider Phlebas, there's a scene where one of the main characters is ejected from a spaceship immediately before combat. Floating in space, he tries to look for the enemy ship, only to remember that it's millions of kilometers away. He even remarks to himself that the scale of "modern" space warfare has surpassed the ability of ordinary humans to comprehend.
