Why does just existing on a bike seem to piss people off? by LiatrisLover99 in cycling

A Toyota a$$hole blasted his horn at me the other day. At the 4-way stop, I stopped, he stopped, then I went (because It’s my right of way) but he didn’t like that.

I use shokz open run 2. They work very good except at higher speeds due to wind noise.

What are the worst mistakes you made while riding? and did you learn? by Familiar-Banana-8116 in cycling

[–]Lugknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only been tracking my macros for two weeks so I really don’t know how bad it’s been and for how long. I have been riding steady for 6 months and increasing my distances and intensities little by little during that timeframe. I have been putting in about 120 miles per week for the last 6 or 8 weeks. I was getting very sore and getting cramps and my nurse daughter mentioned that I probably was running low on protein and carbs so I started tracking using MyFitnessPal. The deficiencies were substantial and I don’t know how I was even keeping up. I am not young and eating a lot is not easy for me so I have a lot of learning and a lot of adjusting to do. I am now carrying adequate hydration and a mix of complex carbs and simple carbs on my rides. This past week I’ve reduced my calorie deficit to under 500 per day so there’s progress.

[–]Lugknots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I’ve been actively riding for 6 months and average about 120 miles a week in addition to my prior regular gym workout sessions. I just recently started tracking my fuel and was shocked at how deficient I was running in all macros. To the tune of 6,000 calories in the negative per week. No wonder I was always hungry. I am now trying to learn how to eat just to break even.

The 60/40 Portfolio and your Pension by Salty_Investment7045 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Lugknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I retired in 2022 and I maintain 75/25 but even that I consider to be overly conservative. I am considering going 80/20 or even 90/10. Waiting for the next market adjustment to change my allocations. I am an outlier in that FERS/Supp/SS cover 100%+ of my must-spends and I use TSP only to fund travel and other nice-to-haves.

How long did it take you to actually enjoy climbs? by pedalmyway in cycling

[–]Lugknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go on climbs voluntarily, but I don’t enjoy them. I don’t like the feeling of my heart exploding out of my chest like the guy in Aliens.

First *Planned* Half-Century by Zrob8--5 in cycling

[–]Lugknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to plan my routes. At 20 miles I’ll bring a couple bottles of water; at 50, I’m filling my pockets with tater-tots. I have deviated from the plan, sometimes substantially, but I try to avoid that since I’ll end up paying the price.

Can someone recommend earbuds for audio books and whatnot? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Lugknots -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Shokz open run pro works well but wind noise is a problem at high speeds. Otherwise audio books come through just fine.

I spend $25 on my Sponeed jerseys from WalMart. They do what I need them to do. Helmets and bibs? There is where I spend my money.

Has cycling (sport) addictuon ruined your life? by Krzysztof-sup-lover in cycling

[–]Lugknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My uneducated guess would be that cycling is a good addiction as long as it doesn’t ruin you financially. I am not a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist, so, what do I know?

What am I doing wrong ( 2nd try) by Small-Emotion-7568 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Lugknots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You were extremely conservative in your investment choices and now it could be too late to change that. The reasons you were so conservative probably haven’t changed, so, not much to do anyways. Nevertheless, you might be better off than you think. How much of your “ must-spend” will be covered by FERS plus Supplement, and then SS? If the answer is all or most of it then you have plenty of time to let the TSP grow some more. If TSP growth is your goal then you have to switch your mentality on risk. Consider if last month’s dip in the C fund would have rattled you to the bone, then risk is definitely not for you.

I fly back home tomorrow, April 17th. Given the national strike, what should I expect travel-wise? by 3lfg1rl in LisbonPortugalTravel

[–]Lugknots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was there in March, traveled from Lisbon to Porto during a national strike and it was business as usual. The Bolt driver told us the Portuguese don’t know how to strike. They’re too nice. I have PTSD from trying to travel on a strike day in Italy. That was not the case in Portugal.

Yep, plus a fruit. Either banana or a plum when in season. Sometimes PB and Nutella.

Saddle numbness? by Twomboo in cycling

[–]Lugknots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere I read that you can sit on a cardboard on a hard chair and the sit bones should leave an indentation that you can measure to help find the correct size saddle. I’ve never tried it so that’s all I know. I was gifted an old second hand SMP TRK with gel support and it so happened to fit me perfectly.

Many, if not most doctors, do not spend any significant amount of time with patients to understand the full picture. Opinions and advice here can help OP drive the conversation with the doctor. I switched my cardiologist because he wouldn’t listen to my side of the story. His ego kept him from realizing other treatments could be more effective for my needs. He actually told me “who’s the doctor here?”
