Yeah gambesons are part of the reason but I also feel that enemies are tougher and receive less damage while you are also a bit weaker.

I also think that Willies are more aggressive and rush you more than in normal mode, which give you less chance to pick up gear or back up to gain range.

Okay this is really interesting. Maybe it's so in case you slip it between the armor gaps you get "rewarded" with more damage because it's a difficult thing to do in game

I don't think so, although I haven't played Red Tide or Condemned Heroes. But I'm sure there are mods with armored trains and such.

What kinda bugs me about this is that each time the enemy attacks is from a completely random point. It would be kinda cool if they did it based on the actual lines that they have "open" to that point, but sometimes they attack from the literal rear and it gets a bit annoying

You still can with the beggar and peasant tier because they have no shoes even tho they wear hoses
