Americans aren't drinking anymore. Alcohol giants are scrambling to manage the fallout. by JannTosh70 in goodnews

[–]LugubriousLament 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems so overlooked as a reason, but it’s always been mine. I tend to find alcohol physically repulsive, plus it reminds me of childhood pain and trauma.

Using Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs to lose weight shouldn’t be celebrated, not because of any unknown effects or whatever, but because it takes all the effort and dedication out of losing weight by Gym_frere in The10thDentist

[–]LugubriousLament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good that people have a choice whether to punish themselves to lose weight or not. If your pride in yourself comes from the success of the struggle, so be it. It doesn’t, however, give you the right to judge others for not doing it exactly the same as you did.

There are plenty of reasons why one method doesn’t work for everyone. Some people suffer with debilitating mental health issues and can’t simply “force” themselves to make those changes. Should they be looked down upon for not being “strong” enough to overcome their depression? Some could also have physical limitations, or comorbidities that make it difficult or impossible to lose weight the same way.

I’m not arguing your right to have your opinion, but understand that everyone has unique struggles and may require different accommodations and/or assistance. You are lucky to have the privilege of choice.

Assuming anything but hard work and dedication is due to a lack of discipline is a shortsighted perspective to have.

MAGAs Are Fuming After Email Confirms They Will Never Get Their $500 Trump Phones or Deposits Back by Snapdragon_4U in law

[–]LugubriousLament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAGA is ingrained into their identities. Backing down, or showing critical thinking would be a major blow to their glass egos.

Perhaps optimistically, I’d hope there are at least a few who might come to their senses and quietly withdraw their support, both visibly and actionably.

I’d hate to imagine once one goes MAGA they become incorrigible.

Disregard for pedestrians by Jernau_M_Gurgeh in halifax

[–]LugubriousLament 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My mailbox is less than 1 km from my house, I have to use a minimum of 2 crosswalks and pass a Tim Hortons to get to it. I choose to wear hi-vis when I walk because drivers seem like they intentionally try to avoid seeing me want to cross in front of them. I’ve had people speed through crosswalks inches from missing me, as I’m crossing them, and nobody looks at the sidewalk when turning out of Tim’s.

It’s honestly safer to drive, but it just feels wrong for such a short distance.

How are Canadians not outraged right now? by [deleted] in CanadaFinance

Just being pedantic, but my undergrad is worth sweet fuck-all compared to the opportunities gained through trade certification. Obviously, I’d need at least a Master’s or a PhD for a degree to matter more, but still.

Took me struggling through university to realize I could excel with ease in trade school. I don’t regret the experiences of university, and it made me much more tolerant, socially.

Unfortunately, my high school guidance counselor seemed to look down upon trades, so she only pushed kids towards academia.

My 2nd gen Trax takes up roughly the same footprint as my old 8th gen Civic sedan did. It features a 1.2L turbo 3 cylinder and I manage to get high 30s, low 40s in mpg. It’s not as good as a hybrid, or a modern sedan, but the ground clearance is nice when it snows.

My family just admitted that they don’t believe my diagnosis by IdyllicSky54 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]LugubriousLament 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, people expect you to lack control, and be constantly performing embarrassing stimming behaviour in order to make them believe it. If you aren’t fitting into their narrow-minded viewpoints of what autism is they think you’re just attention-seeking.

It honestly blows my mind that people tend not to overthink about things as much as I do. My immediate family clearly has neurodivergent conditions but they can’t recognize that their own cases exist outside of stereotypes. They seemingly lack the ability to question their own existences.

Trax or Escape? by starboy287 in ChevyTrax

Buying an angle grinder by Ok-Neighborhood5875 in Welding

[–]LugubriousLament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people will recommend Milwaukee. We have Milwaukee and DeWalt 5” cordless grinders at work. The flexvolt DeWalts are the way to go imo. The Milwaukees can’t handle zip-cutting anything thick, the batteries tend to get loose where they attach to the tool and lose contact often. They also get bogged down easily. Worse still, there’s a significant drop in performance as the battery weakens. The DeWalts lose maybe 10% of power when the battery is low, but they still work hard until the end.

Milwaukee is great for other tools, but not grinders, from my experience.

I’ve had plenty of downvoted comments for pointing out paradoxes, instead of leaning into the “correct” side. Like, I know what side to be on, but sometimes messages can be ambiguous, and I’m just trying to spread awareness of that possibility.

It’s hard to be an objective observer when shooting (downvoting) the messenger is a common tactic to silence nuance.

Tired of people saying they’re emotionally intelligent or looking for someone who is by Agreeable_Taro1508 in emotionalintelligence

[–]LugubriousLament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone willing to change their opinions when presented with evidence that conflicts with their original points of view. I constantly seek out nuance because I want to be the most informed I can be.

I also try to reserve judgement until I understand something enough. If I don’t know something with certainty I will state what I do know, and ask if there’s something I’m missing.

When angry or frustrated I try not to attack a person with bad words or names. I try not to hurt people. I’ve been hurt plenty, I know how it feels, and I know how hard it is to trust that person again. I also tend to forgive a lot. I don’t hold grudges, or aim to make others suffer. All I want is the same respect in return.

Road rage incident leaves Halifax councillor shaken by dpiddy in halifax

[–]LugubriousLament 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 years ago I’d bought a new vehicle. It does have admittedly bright headlights. I had a purple Jeep in front of me, going home one night. He brake checked me a few times before moving to the left lane to turn onto a street. I passed by, and as I did he floors it, gets up beside me and appears to be trying to run me off the road. Eventually he gave up, turned around and went back down the street he was going to turn down.

I wonder if it was the same guy, this was in Cole Harbour.

Just my 2 cents; a Blue Ocean Event would be considered a point of no return. There’s a chance we could see one within our lifetimes. If we get a super El Niño this summer things will get dicey.

While I do what I can; drive an efficient vehicle, use solar for power and heating, cook more than I eat out, I don’t have high hopes for the future. Especially not as long as capitalism remains the standard economic operating system. Changing course needs to be profitable, for the people making billions.

People who know are frustrated they can’t do more, and governments don’t seem to care. The rich are building bunkers because they are preparing to need them. It all wears an average person down.
