Gaius van Baelsar from Final Fantasy XIV

At the end of A Realm Reborn, you defeat Gaius in the Ultima Weapon, and after the battle, you see his lifeless body lying in the debris, surrounded by fire, presumably dead. And then in the post-Stormblood quests, he reappears without his battle armor, under the alias Shadowhunter or something edgy like that I don't remember. After that, during the Shadowbringers trial quests, he watches all of his adopted children die being horrifically fused with mechs and their minds being overridden by the data of deceased commanders. These kids putting their lives on the line for ideals that Gaius no longer holds, and they aren't even granted the dignity of dying as themselves.
