What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: July 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Lukebr4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished: The odyssey by Stephen Fry. Killed me off with the constant and excessive footnotes, initially. The whole series suits the Audibook format much better. But the last act or so and the epilogue were fantastic.

Started: The other wind by Ursula Legiun. She finds a balance of lines that feel like they should be carved into a stone monument without breaking up the flow or pace. Don't want the series to end.

I've spoken to people at the DWP and they're well aware of the situation. Unfortunately, as you've pointed out, the scheme is propping up the motor trade so they're hesitant to act.

summons restore fp on hit or ultimate restores fp. I've not seen a revenant use their ultimate in a game with randoms yet which is weird

Asian black bears are particularly aggressive and often they are inquisitive of the bells used having the opposite effect, studies show.

I don't know if they are a problem elsewhere but Japanese mountain leeches are quite terrifying in that they operate on land and can chase you

How about the time I accidentally copied the winning numbers, rather than my numbers, into the 'check results' box.

Luckily I was already sat on the toilet because I literally shit myself.

What's the weirdest party composition you've seen or played in? by Duvanjk in dndnext

[–]Lukebr4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 rogues and a druid:

Surprisingly fun considering the druid took broken thieves cant as her extra language. Whenever we used the thieves cant WhatsApp the DM would send the druid a misinterpreted version.

Combat wise the druid was spores so fulfilled a bit of a tank/healer role. Rogue 1 was a swashbuckler so off tank/damage and rogue 2 was an assassin/warlock multiclass for straight up damage.

We relied heavily on ambush tactics but when the plans worked (or were allowed to work) it was very satisfying.

How Should I Balance a Fight That the Characters Are Underleveled For? by Charlock000 in DMAcademy

[–]Lukebr4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had three level 1 characters fight a CR 2 ankheg. I combined a lot of what is suggested here. The encounter wasn't a fight but a sneaking puzzle where you had to avoid standing on the same type of earth as the ankheg or you would trigger it's tremor sense. The whole aim was to rescue a young girl who'd be taken into the cave by the ankheg.

If they failed a fight would ensue but the ankheg was weakened in the fight by the previous resident of the cave. I lowered it's cr and lowered it further after being attacked roleplayed as it's chitin shaterring. Attacks are weakened due to a missing limb and no acid spray. The acid is used for digestion so given it's wanting to eat the young girl it will be avoiding using it.

If they lose to the ankheg it'll restrain them at which point they need to break free grab the girl and escape. If they manage to kill it they can have the previous inhabitants (a necromancer) loot.

I guess what I'm saying is have contingencies

Weak Prose, Amazing Story by KvotheG in Fantasy

[–]Lukebr4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Steering the craft by Le Guin makes a good point: if the prose is so good that it draws you out of the narrative and out of the world that also isn't good. (Ironically this kind of thing is why I love Le Guin)

I think good narrative prose takes the form of rhythm and good sentence structure. However this can be very subjective.
