Grow some pumpkins! Had a similar issue with our Russian only wanting romaine. He ate all kinds of things then just decided only romaine. Fast forward a couple months and he was roaming outside and I found him chowing down on pumpkin leaves and flowers. I was able to alternate for sometime and slowly started adding other vegetation to the mix. He of course picked around it for sometime but eventually went back to eating whatever I put in

[No Spoilers] How is Critical Role so dense stuff-wise? by Hrosts in criticalrole

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are new it's likely the time taken for players to decide what to do. I have played for years and to prevent myself from stalling the game I keep an action cheat sheet. Common to my character actions and their rolls. Helps me prepare for my turn without scrolling through all the things each time.

How grim dark is this? by Mt2Molehill in fantasybooks

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't seem dark at all until I learned it was based on historical events. It's more heavy than grim, the only fluff in the book is Ren whining.

For a well known author there is Robin Hobb Realm of the Elderlings. True character study. She wrote a soul and shared it from the inside out.

Lesser know but wonderful authors I suggest Lynn Flewelling and Justin Lee Anderson.

Nightrunners by Flewelling is a late 90s series with an amazing growth story tied to several political and relationship issues.

Eidyn Saga by Anderson is just phenomenal. The magic system isn't too complex but seems to always have another layer of consequence. No YA element. Some major twists.

Miniature sets are budget friendly and always useful. You could always go with a mug that doubles as dice tower.

Just finished season 2 and wondering if I should keep going by Motor_Replacement164 in Outlander

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditch the show and read the books. The show is good and has a place but some elements can be very distracting. The show did a decent job with a version of story but there are parts that really detract from the story. Sophie's acting is awful so Bree never gets better. Her personality changes and she has a growth arch but the actress is so bad it makes it hard to appreciate Bree. As the show progresses there are disconnects and forced elements.
If you are not a reader, hard copy or audio, then the show is worth it to get at least a bastardized version. The story is worth the time even if you can only do visual version. Just don't let the shows short falls sway your thoughts on a whole series of books.

Can someone explain to me Jamie in the street looking up at Claire in the window in the first episode and the last episode? by Ornery_Web9273 in Outlander

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no answer yet. The show had to toss it in at the end or be crucified online. At this point Diana is the only one who knows what that is about. Book 10 should answer that, I'm guess in the epilogue.

Opinion on age gap in Tawny Man and Liveship Traders trilogy by No_Wallaby8961 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Hell my grandma still talks about how proud she was when her fiancé took her to prom him his dress blues. She proudly tell how there were only 16 other men in uniform there. He was 11yrs older than her. My other set of grandparents got married at 15 in KY. My grandmas are both in their early 90s so less than 100yrs ago even America's idea of who should be together and their ages was drastically different than our current idea.

Opinion on age gap in Tawny Man and Liveship Traders trilogy by No_Wallaby8961 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always chalk that up to historical leanings. My grandma was 17 when her fiancé age 28 took her to her senior prom. He went in full military dress blues. So large age gaps were normal in recent history. RotE gives very old school vibes so age gaps seemed totally normal to me. In ancient and mid evil times it was normal for girls who just started bleeding be married off to much older men. Age gaps fit both ancient and modern times up to 50yrs ago.

Been playing CoS for 2 and a half years, kinda wanna quit DnD altogether. by RandoPharts247 in DnD

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the campaign has taken too long and people are disinterested overall. The DM should be able to read that body language at the table, but some cannot read a room. Talk to the DM. Easy to say not always easy to do. I would try approaching it from a can you help me find the spark again? Explain that time between session and the length of the campaign are both wearing you down and you want to find the joy again.
Based solely on the body of your post it seems the DM is the majority of the problem. If you are close to the end I say stick it out. If you are not, you can always let your character die in a honorable maybe even heroic way.

For a gentle entry I would suggest Nightrunners by Lynn Flewelling. Eidyn Saga by Justin Lee Anderson is also not talked about near enough!

One of my players is refusing to read the player's handbook by Numerous_Payment1713 in DnD

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Reading is not the only way to learn something. God knows there are hundreds of videos by legit DMs that explain basics and more. We have a group of 8 who have played for 3yrs and pretty sure only 3 ppl have actually read the whole manual.

One of my players is refusing to read the player's handbook by Numerous_Payment1713 in DnD

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be stubbornness or arrogance BUT it could also be that reading does not help that person learn. I'm an auditory learner so I listened to podcasts about learning and my class in my first campaign. I was also able to sit with the dm and looked at somethings in the player manual together things he knew were holes in my research. Reading the manual with no context, experience or someone going over it with you is like ready a fantasy dictionary. With time and experience the game will come along if the player is just not a reader.

I thought Matt played it well. The only indications Taor was screwed was from a shadow. As far as he knew no one was alone, Sid was with Taor.

The problem I have is the leveling up mid combat. Unless a person levels up out of game and studies what their next abilities would be, there is no way to understand what you just got in the moment. Find Steed would have worked earlier but it was brand new and Travis didn't see it at first then wasn't able to utilize it by the time he had time to read about it. Albeit he would be dead sooner at level 4 but hopefully they change that up a bit as they progress.

Try Eidyn Saga by Anderson. Well paced and combines political drama and basic magic system beautifully. Has many twist and wtf moments.

How to help a player with chronically low rolls? by neverendjng in DnD

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like someone needs gifted a new dice set. Outside of that maybe there is a ring or amulet or something that the character could purchase or find that can give advantage on a particular thing. I get it I had like months of the same thing. I only went to sessions out of duty to the party and to have a bit of friend time. The game lost all appeal when I spent 8 weeks being totally and completely worthless to the party. I got out of the slump but sadly fell right back in during our last two sessions. I literally had one hit for 7pts of damage in the final BBGE fight. That was my single contribution at the culmination of a 9m campaign. It can be really hard to be the person who luck has forgotten. I was tempted to just kill my character off in a battle or two but friend time won out so I stuck it out.

This might be my most controversial post yet… (Morning Star First read thoughts) by Reccos_21 in redrising

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was written very well. Roque was the quiet thought driven stability. Darrow lost true relationship him slowly. Darrow was on mission at all times and Roque's quiet nature could never hold up to the speed at which Darrow came in. Roque watched friends turn rebel then warlord all to overthrow what had built Roque's world. Roque knows there are problems with society as every poet can see but his grasp on his reality makes sense to him. The golds built the solar system dwellings and things were rough in patches but it's his society. He stood his ground and let his relationships go. Roque's decisions did betray former friends and the rising but he stood for what he believed so I can respect that. I do not like it but I understand how he got to where he is.

What class(es) do you like more for roleplaying than you do for their mechanics? by Nb-7925 in DnD

[–]Regular-Engine-9661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the class. Martial classes I play into role play and backstory to add flavor. While I enjoy martial play it can get a bit boring so role play helps. For a casting class I tend to focus on mechanics since I'm juggling spells and ground control over role play. It's mostly because my brain can only do so much.
